Fat Loss, One a Day at a Time

Rome wasn't built in a day and your fat loss won't happen
that way either. Don't expect to start eating perfectly and
exercising religiously tomorrow. Instead set yourself up
for success by implementing at least one supportive habit
per week. Make an effort to adopt the premise of "progress,
not perfection." By developing awareness that improvement
is measured by your daily progress, you can save yourself a
lot of grief and frustration from the beginning. Focusing
on small, positive steps in everything you do is a vital
component to change. It starts you moving in the right
direction and the momentum of your amazing, transforming
results will soon follow. With time, commitment and a
willingness to continue to take those small steps, failure
is not an option.

How to do it: Be mindful of the fact that you didn't gain
it overnight so you're not going to lose it overnight. A
safe and effective fat loss program will yield 1 to 2
pounds of fat loss a week, not 10. As you begin your weight
loss journey, aim for 2-3 small improvements each week.
Build up to eating more supportively and moving a little
more than yesterday. These small changes will add up to big
improvements over time.

Beware of supplements and "quick fixes" that promise
accelerated fat loss. Instead, plan on losing fat weight
slowly. Sure we all want instant results, but it's
impossible to undo a years of inactivity and poor nutrition
overnight.

Instead of only looking at the big picture, try to break it
down into smaller bites. Set one-month goals, three-month
goals, six-month goals and even yearly goals. Carry over
each previous goal to make sure that you aren't stopping
one to achieve another. Make sure goals are achievable and
realistic and what you truly want. A half-hearted desire
will produce half-hearted results.

Remember, life happens and we must face the challenges.
Sometimes that means not getting to exercise or eat
properly. The difference is we get it. We make it a point
to view each situation, each setback as an opportunity to
LEARN and ASK, "What could I do differently next time?"
Then it becomes a matter of getting back on track as soon
as possible. Leave the excuses and blame behind and forget
about beating ourselves up – we're only human. Strive to do
a little better today than you did the day before. The key
is to stay consistent, focused and take daily action. Make
goals meaningful. Our minds cannot differentiate between
achieving an enormous goal or a miniscule goal it only
perceives success or failure. If you set a goal that is
impossible to fail you'll only be setting yourself up for
tremendous victory.

Don't be too rigid. Telling your self that you HAVE to
workout for a set time to feel a sense of completion is ill
fated. If you set out to workout for 30 minutes and you
only get in 20, you'll more apt to be disappointed
regardless of how hard you worked. If you simply set a goal
to go to the gym at least 2-3 days a week and complete your
resistance training and cardio you'll perceive yourself as
a winner.

An additional goal idea: Have you ever wanted to
participate in a race or sport that you've never had the
endurance for? Then use that as a goal! When the end
justifies the means it's easier to make it through the
rough spots. It's a win-win situation if you are able to
achieve a want and a need simultaneously!

Hearing Loss Prevalent In Baby Boomers

Hearing loss is a common problem in those over 65 years
old. But now, more youngsters and baby boomers are being
diagnosed with hearing loss. Exposure to excessive noise
levels is the main culprit.

On the top of the list of noise induced hearing loss causes
is listening to loud music. It is estimated that 10 million
baby boomers suffer from hearing loss, much of which is
attributed to attending rock concerts in the beginning of
1960s and 70s. Hearing damage that results from this type
of noise often happens gradually and the effects are not
known until many years later.

The increased use of technology has been associated with
hearing loss in baby boomers. Portable listening
technology expanded from the walkman to the MP3 player to

Are You in Danger from Metabolic Syndrome X?

Syndrome X is actually called Metabolic Syndrome X. This
was discovered over 10 years ago, but scientists have been
looking for this for 100 years.

What does it mean? Metabolic has to do with metabolism, the
way our body uses energy. Syndrome means many diseases
involved. X means "we don't know". So it's basically a
bunch of diseases that relate to your metabolism that
scientists don't know enough about. The cause of Syndrome X
is now being discovered and determined.

In Syndrome X, the blood has high levels of sugar, but
unlike diabetes, there is lots of insulin to process the
sugar, but the sugar (food) is not getting in the cells to
provide energy. You are tired.

A sign of having this Syndrome X would be a person who
needs to eat sugar, carbohydrates, and caffeine to keep
going throughout the day. They get an energy boost, which
falls in an hour, and then they need another boost and
another boost throughout the day.

Syndrome X is only found in industrialized countries and
cities. It started when white flour and sugar came along
with the industrial revolution in the 1800's. It got much
worse when companies started using fructose to sweeten
foods. It is 20 times sweeter than glucose (sugar). Your
body can't handle all this sugar.

It is estimated that 99% of women have Syndrome X. Even if
that statistic is high, that still means a lot of women
have Syndrome X.

So, what's happening in the body with this Syndrome X?
Let's say you eat an apple. Your body only absorbs 20% of
the sugar contained in that apple. The same goes for corn
on the cob. Bananas are higher at 40%. Watermelon is 10%.
Eating these whole foods does not produce a huge amount of
sugar (carbohydrates) for your body to deal with. The body
makes a little insulin to go with the glucose which then
goes into the liver. Then the glucose (energy) is sent to
the cells along with insulin, which helps the sugar
(energy) get into the cell.

Now, let's look at what happens when you eat white flour,
sugar, or fructose (high fructose corn syrup, like the
sugar in soft drinks).

A note to make here: Most all bread available is based on
'white flour'. Even wheat bread is made from 'white flour'.
Bread made from flour that has been truly stone ground the
old fashioned way is the only time you get away from 'white
flour'. Stone ground flour will spoil in a week whereas
processed flour will keep for years. That's why the
industrialized societies changed to processed flour, but it
has hurt our health. And the adverse effects are getting
worse with each generation.

When your stomach sees flour or sugar coming, it tells the
pancreas to make lots of insulin to deal with the large
amounts of glucose from white flour (or sugar or fructose).
This huge amount of sugar (because 100% is able to be
absorbed) goes into the liver, which monitors all food. The
liver tastes the blood and decides that it is too sweet, so
it turns the sugar into fat, which then goes into the
bloodstream.

This fat is the triglycerides in your blood. It is sugar
converted to fat. White blood cells then gobble up this fat
(because there's too much of it) and store it in your
belly, hips, everywhere.

This fat, along with a second type produced (which cannot
be broken down, the body can't burn it), will also cover
and coat a cell. This covering of fat over the outside of a
cell prevents food/glucose from getting into the cell to
provide energy.

So, our cells aren't getting enough energy and we have to
eat more sweets to give us a quick boost, causing the
pancreas to secrete more insulin. I believe this constant
secreting of insulin is what wears out the pancreas and
gives people the tendency to get Type II Diabetes.

It's estimated that 70-90% of people have high
triglycerides. This high blood sugar, turned into high fat
by the liver, causes 70% of modern diseases.

Fat in the arteries leads to strokes and heart disease.
Fatty deposits on the brain can lead to Alzheimer's,
Parkinson's, and Multiple Sclerosis. DNA damage can lead to
auto-immune diseases while unchecked cell growth in the
body can lead to cancer.

When the liver breaks down fructose Very Low Density
Lipoprotein (VLDL) is produced. This converts to Palmitic
Acid, which goes inside the cell.

But when Palmitic Acid is in the cell it then converts to
Salimide. This Salimide goes into the DNA and attacks it,
causing a mutation. These mutations can make a person prone
to certain types of cancer. They can also be the source of
auto-immune diseases where the body attacks its own cells
because it doesn't recognize them, due to the DNA damage.

These mutations also get passed on to our kids. This is why
our children's health is not going to be as good as was our
parent's health, unless we change our ways and teach our
children how to live healthier lives.

So, basically, sugar converted to fat is damaging the genes
in our DNA.

It will take 2-3 generations of improved attention to
health and nutrition to fully correct damaged genes, but it
is possible.

Do You Hold On To Your Fibromyalgia?

I want to talk to you about your thoughts behind having a
chronic illness like fibromyalgia and how getting labeled
with fibromyalgia, having to deal with it daily, and having
everyone tell you there is no cure can set you back.

In my blog I've stated that I don't believe you should
accept that you have fibromyalgia and try to live with it.
In doing that, you will always have it! Rather, accept that
you can, do, and deserve to feel good, strong, and healthy.

Here's a quote that I read just last night by Silvia Browne
from the book "The Other Side and Back"

". . .the more you declare any illness or physical problem
to be a part of you, the more you'll hang on to it and
refuse to let go, because we never willingly forfeit
anything we've woven into the fabric of our identity.

Please don't misunderstand--I'm not saying for a moment
that you shouldn't take your illnesses seriously. Follow
the advice of the best doctors available to you; have
regular physicals; educate yourself on health issues; eat
sensibly, exercise and listen to your body when it tries to
tell you it needs some kind of special attention. But keep
health in perspective. "You" are not your body, any more
than "you" are the car you travel in or the house you live
in."

Please don't even consider that you will always have
fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue or whatever. View yourself
as a loving and caring person, not as someone who has
fibromyalgia.

For example, you cannot say to yourself, "I do not have
fibromyalgia. I do not have fibromyalgia." Your
subconscious mind records the word "fibromyalgia" and will
reward you with what you think about.

Another example: I had a client contact me by email the
other day asking if a certain symptom was part of her
fibromyalgia. I kind of got on her case because she had
asked me this same thing a few times before, wondering if a
certain symptom was related to her fibro. Even though now
she's much better than when we first started working
together, she's still holding on to the identity of having
fibro. I said, essentially, that she needs to lose the idea
that she has fibro and that she'll never get over it if she
believes she will always have it.

So, watch your thinking. Watch how you form your identity.
I'm sorry doctors have wrongly told you that you just have
to deal with it. Throw that thinking out! You do need to
have the doctor rule out anything more serious than
fibromyalgia. Then get into the mind-frame that you will
listen to what your body needs, eat well, exercise, enjoy
life and learn as much as you can about your health and how
to support it.

Beat Fat with Breakfast

Breakfast is easily the most overlooked solution when it
comes to effective fat burning tips. Studies consistently
show that people, who regularly eat breakfast, eat fewer
calories throughout the day, have better nutritional
habits, and weigh less than those who choose to skip
breakfast.

When it comes to your fat loss, your goal is to make your
body burn more calories. Your metabolism is like a burning
fire, how can you make the fire burn stronger without
putting something on it to burn? Our bodies are burning fat
and calories 24 hours a day, however, calories are burned
at the slowest rate while we are sleeping. Without
something to jump-start it in the morning, your metabolism
may remain in slow motion throughout the day and any extra
calories – no matter how healthy - will be stored as fat.

The act of eating and digesting supportive foods
frequently, increases your metabolism so you can burn more
fat and calories all day long.

How to do it: Eat a supportive meal within an hour of
waking. Feel like your always running late? No time to eat?
The secret – get up 10-20 minutes earlier and keep it
simple. Not only can you increase time spent with your
family at the kitchen table, but making time to start your
day off with a high protein, high fiber breakfast will
boost your metabolism, your energy and your mood. Because
breakfast provides you with the energy you need to get
through your day, the more energy you have, the more active
you'll be and the more active you are, the more calories
you burn.

If you are not hungry first thing in the morning, try
starting your day with a big glass of water or freshly
brewed green tea. Proceed with your morning routine and
plan to allow yourself about 10-15 minutes before you walk
out the door to eat your breakfast.

If you like to exercise first thing in the morning, eat 30
to 45 minutes before your workout.

Try one of the following options:

1. Eat a light snack – yogurt or a piece of fruit. Eat your
regular breakfast 30-45 minutes after your workout.

2. Eat half of your regular breakfast before the workout
and the other half about 30-45 minutes after your workout.

3. Drink a meal replacement shake – quick and easy to make
and for your body too digest.

Watch out for "Protein/Breakfast Bars". Many of these items
seem appealing for they are quick and easy; however the
majority of these bars are loaded with sugar and fat. Check
the nutrition facts.

Here are some breakfast fat loss favorites: Cereal is a
MUST. It's convenient, easy to prepare, easy to eat and
full of nutrients – No…"Whole Grain Lucky Charm" does not
fall into this category. Be sure to choose your cereals
based on the information on the food label.

The top choices should have:

• 5 grams of Fiber or more
• 8 grams of Sugar or LESS
• Sugar not listed among the first 3 ingredients.

For all other breakfast options, be sure to include a
protein, complex carbohydrate, and fresh or frozen fruit.
These are some of my favorites:

• Oatmeal with natural peanut butter, cinnamon and a side
of fresh berries.
• Kashi Go Lean Crunch with skim milk and a banana.
• Scrambled egg whites topped with salsa and shredded
cheese wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla.
• Meal Replacement Shake with a piece of fruit.

So if you're interested in fat loss, make sure you don't
forget – breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

It's a Resolution to Anti-aging

Five, four, three, two, one. Happy New Year! Whether you
were dancing in the streets at midnight or sleeping beneath
the sheets long before the ball dropped, the world rang in
2007, which means you will celebrate another birthday
before 2008's big bash. However, while "Dick Clark's New
Year's Rockin' Eve" countdown and the counting of candles
on your birthday cake may be unavoidable year after year,
the way you age is certainly in your control.

Aging gracefully and comfortably (without the aches and
pains of arthritis and osteoporosis) can be as simple as
choosing the right foods in your diet, as well as
exercising regularly. Because even more than preventing
wrinkles, anti-aging also means preventing memory loss,

against oxidation. Therefore, on the nutrition side of
things, choosing antioxidant-rich foods, such as berries,
may be one tasty way to living a longer, healthier life.
According to the Journal of Agricultural and Food
Chemistry, cranberries, blackberries and blueberries rank
highest in antioxidant levels. In addition to berries,
other anti-aging foods include garlic, fish, whole grains,
cruciferous vegetables, nuts, soy, water and red wine.

How To Get Rid Of A Cold Sore

Cold sores can be quite distressing. Not only can they be
painful but they can be quite embarrassing too, as when
they are there they are difficult to cover up, and even if
you did cover them up you would probably end out causing
yourself more irritation. I is because of these conditions
that people want to know how they can get rid of a cold
sore. Well there are many different approaches to treating
cold sores. Some are good, some are bad and some are
indifferent. Also with the advent of the internet when you
try to research cold sore remedies, you can be bombarded
with information, which, in truth can leave you more
confused than when you first started. On the whole though,
in my opinion it is more important to recognise and
understand what a cold sore is and become aware of the
symptoms that accompany a cold sore, and then you can start
to control this annoying affliction.

In a nutshell cold sores are annoying, small, painful
blisters on the lips and nearby skin, and they are caused
by the herpes simplex virus, and when you have one please
be careful as they're contagious, especially in the first 2
or 3 days after an outbreak. Now although cold sores are
not life-threatening, they can be quite dangerous if left
untreated. If you do have a cold sore please do not
despair as they are quite common, and although you can't
cure or prevent them, there are steps you can take to
control them.

Treating a cold sore and how long it lasts depending on
your health and your choice of cold sore treatments. As
previously stated, there is unfortunately no cure for cold
sores. So this means that really you are in a situation of
controlling and preventing outbreak rather than curing.
There are many different treatment options available. It is
really up to the individual what route they want to go down
to reduce the discomfort associated with cold sores and to
lessen the duration of the outbreak. One of the main
things to bear in mind is that treatments may only reduce
the duration of the cold sores by 1 to 2 days. But on the
positive side, although it does not lesson the duration
much, it can help soothe the painful blisters and other
uncomfortable symptoms. As always for your treatment you
can go down the chemical route or the natural route.
Natural treatments may include tropical creams or
ointments. Chemical treatments, on the other hand normally
come in the form of creams which you can get
non-prescription. Or you can even try an antiviral medicine
(such as acyclovir or famciclovir). One of the best things
you can do for yourself though is learn to recognise and
avoid triggers that you know are associated with when you
have a cold sore.

As well as looking out for triggers, it is a good idea to
familiarise yourself with the symptoms associate with cold
sores so that you can start treating it sooner rather than
later. Common symptoms are to feel some pain, burning, or
itching at the site of the cold sore before it appears.
Symptoms are usually most severe 8 hours after the outbreak
and can be quite similar to those of other viral infections
and may include fever, swollen glands, fatigue and multiple
sores in the mouth and on the gums. Symptoms subside after
the initial illness runs its course, but the virus remains
in the nerve cells until reactivated. Symptoms may last
from seven to ten days, but although the symptoms may
disappear, unfortunately the virus does not.

Massage and Massage Therapy: The Body and Mind Overhaul

Let's cut to the chase.

What do you want to see when you look in the mirror? How do
you want to feel when you look in the mirror? Let me take a
stab at what you actually see and what you actually feel.

You think that the face looking back at you is
unattractive, and that your best years have long gone, or
even that the face looking back at you is downright ugly!

Why am I so sure? Because that is exactly what I said and
exactly how I felt on a daily basis about the face that
looked back at me from my own mirror.

Am I different from you… no way! I have spent far too much
money on beauty products and anti wrinkle creams, on age
reducing pills and potions and I've fallen for every 'Get
young and beautiful' new product that came my way with a
net result of not looking a day younger and not feeling any
better about myself.

That is, until my best friend gave me a gift certificate
for a facial massage. Without getting too dramatic, I can
say with hand on heart, that without knowing it, my friend
had given me a life changing gift. I had never considered
massage or massage therapy, because I had it in my mind
that it was an expensive luxury, and if there were any
benefits I certainly didn't think they would apply to me.

When the time came, my friend had to drag me along for my

many that I've had since have been to give me a sense of
self appreciation. Massage and massage therapy is for the

on and on, and as I've discovered for myself, the benefits
are not confined to physical improvements, but to
psychological improvements as well.

Do I look like a supermodel… well I never have and I never
will, but that's not the point. I'm now happy to look at
myself in the mirror and more to the point, I feel good
about what I see and I'm happy with how I feel. To keep me
feeling this way I give myself a thorough facial massage
every day and I make a big deal out of doing so. I put on
relaxing music and I burn essential oils to create a
completely enjoyable experience. A half hour is all it
takes and yes, I do believe I look younger, if I say so
myself.

I suppose the main point here is that you, me or anyone
else deserves to feel good about themselves, and for me,
the gift of a facial massage was the necessary trigger.
There are many things in life that can give you that much
needed lift and I hope you find them, but for now, giving
yourself a facial massage is as good a kick-start as any.

Fish Oil and Heart Disease

According to National Statistics online, nearly 15% of the
population of the UK are suffering or have suffered from a
cardiac health event in their lifetimes. That means that
for every 100 people in the room, about 15 of them will
have a heart attack or suffer from a coronary disease.
Interestingly enough, this statistic includes both men and
women, with men only having a slight advantage over the
women in terms of number of cases. Even with all we know
about heart disease and how to prevent it, it seems that
there is so much more to learn.

What is Heart Disease?

The heart is the muscle in the body that allows for
transportation of materials throughout the body. When a
person takes in food, these meals are broken down by the
digestive system in order to be accessible for functions in
the body. As the food is broken down into nutrients, these
nutrients are then transported into the blood stream in
order to get to the right areas of the body. When the
heart pumps, it moves these blood cells around to the
extremities and then when it contracts, it pulls the blood
into itself by means of the veins in order to push that
blood into the body into the arteries. When the heart is
unable to function properly, this process can not take
place.

There are a number of reasons and names for the idea of
heart disease. At its simplest definition, heart disease
is when the heart is damaged or just unable to work as it
should. This can be a hereditary and congenital condition,
like in the instance of a valve problem. A patient can
have this from birth and never need to have anything done
to repair it, while other patients need to have this fixed
in order to make sure that heart works properly.

Heart disease can be grouped into being caused by heredity,
lifestyle or by a defect or injury. Hereditary factors
like a predisposition to high cholesterol can cause
troubles like heart attacks and myocardial infarction.
Then again, if a patient takes in too much cholesterol and
fat into their diet, they can also increase their risk for
heart disease.

The heart disease cases that cause troubles for patients
will have conditions like hardening of the arteries,
blockages of the vessels, and a narrowing/widening of these
passageways for the blood. When the vessels become too
blocked, blood can not get to the heart, resulting in heart
damage and death.

What are the Symptoms of Heart Disease?

The real concern when it comes to heart disease is that
there may be few, if any, symptoms at first. A patient may
have completely normal lab results as well as no noticeable
physical symptoms. In more advanced cases, the cholesterol
levels will be high, the LDL levels will be high, and HDL
levels will be low. Blood pressure readings may increase
and the patient may report mild chest pain and tightness.
Some patients even report troubles with breathing during
activity. The heart rate may be higher as has become more
difficult for the heart to do the same job on a lower
number of beats per minute.

In an emergent condition, the symptoms would be an
increased heart rate, crushing chest pain, and possibly
nausea. Others report that they had a raised temperature
and sweating, as well as left arm weakness.

According to recent studies done at Harvard Medical
University, fish oil seems to be able to prevent heart
disease. With its anti-inflammatory properties, fish oil
seems to allow the body to repair smaller damage spots
before they become too problematic. There have also been

cholesterol. The essential fatty acids in fish oil help

7 STEPS TO IMPROVING YOUR LIFE: Part 2. There's more to being healthy than eating lettuce

Here are the seven guidelines which will help you to change
your reaction to the past and regain the power to make
decisions to improve your life and lessen your stress.

* Step One: It is not as great a problem as you might
think. Look at it as merely getting ride of a computer
virus or throwing out an out of date packet of oatmeal. It
is merely a matter of sorting out the infected memory
boxes, washing down the storage shelves, replacing the good
boxes and making a fresh start.Your commitment to making it
work is the key.

* Step Two: This is the most important step. You must
decide very firmly to change your relationship with your
past. Accept that everybody has a past and what many
experienced was far worse than whatever happened to you.
We hear daily of people with a difficult history who have
succeeded in life. That is because they changed their
relationship with what happened to them. Instead of
concentrating on the failings of others and how bad other
people's behaviour made them feel they concentrated on what
they could do in future to avoid itt happening again. They
kept hold of the power to decide what happened to them.
Sometimes they merely decided to show their 'opponents'
that whatever the criticism being flung at them was not
true: ie they could succeed, they were not feeble, they
could be rich, they could 'make it' in whatever they
decided to do. To have power to decide how anybody lives
their life is everybody's right. You too must take back the
power in your life so that you make the decisions from now
on, not your past. Imagine how this will free you by
opening new avenues in life, improving relationships and
offering new exciting adventures

* .Step Three: Now is the time to ask yourself several
questions which at first may seem difficult to answer.
However you must not shy away from really trying and be
honest. Let us tackle, as an example, some of those things
or people you say you hate for what they did to you. Try to
analyse why you feel hatred and question whether it really
is hatred, or could it be something else? What emotion do
you actually experience when you think of hem?

* Step Four: Now it is time to make a list of all the
emotions you can think of: envy, jealousy, fear,
resentment, shame, loneliness, feeling abandoned and so on.
Were any of these the actual emotions troubling you when
you decided you 'hated' something or somebody? When
something terrible happened to you how did you really feel?
Next stop blaming ourself feeling that in some way you
deserved what happened. Instead let go of the bad feelings
and concentrate on the fact that whatever happened was in
the past – and that you are now in charge of how you react
to that.

* Step Five: You might at this stage be imagining the way
ahead might be too difficult. That is quite
understandable. Old habits die hard and allowing our past
to have power over our present has probably become a
habit. Like most habits it might be one which is not
easily broken. Sometimes like a gambler, a smoker, or a
drinker, we find it easier to take the well defined road
even though we know it will not take us to where we want
to go. We can be mpted to choose to stay as we are, to
continue to cause unhappiness for hose who care for us as
well as for ourselves. We continue to lose friends and
lovers, never to find new ones, to never be at peace with
ourselves. We might find it easier, even though we are not
happy, to remain on our currentt path and not to strike out
and take a few well chosen and really thought out risks. We
may prefer to continue hoarding the 'past their use-by
weevil ridden boxes' or 'continue using that virus ridden
computer'. Let's hope not and that you will move on

* Step Six: Spend an evening imagining how you will feel
when you succeed in quitting your old habits. Imagine the
glow you will experience when you can look into your
weevil free store cupboard and find only goodies. No
longer will you look back with a jaundiced eye. You will be
able to recall the joyful memories, and ignore the bad
ones. You will now see your garden as full of beautiful
flowers and shrubs rather than invading weeds. To
misquote a cliché: you will see the glass flowing overl,
never mind half full, rather than half empty. Consider now
all the benefits of continuing along the new path. No
longer will you expect to find a maggot in all your apples,
a caterpillar in every rose, a dragon around every corner.
You will see a potential friend in everyone you meet rather
than labelling them as a potential enemy. You will not
feel threatened by those you see as better educated,
richer, stronger or different in any way. You will see
them as interesting and as a possible enrichment in you
rlife.

* Step Seven: At this stage you may come up against your
greatest hurdle; it is one you absolutely must cross. This
is the need to accept that everyone – whoever they may be
– has memory boxes; and that many of these could be
creating problems for them (and you) in the same way yours
do/did for you. Now will be the time, having worked so hard
on yourself and your memory boxes and having cleared out
all the infected ones, to make a new commitment never to
allow anything which happens to you in the future to become
infected.

Only then will YOU really have taken back THE POWER which
is your right; THE POWER to make decisions on how you will
run your life in future and how you will react to whatever
happens to you - whether it be good or bad.

technologies and treatment. In some cases, they are even
leading their respective fields.

Finally, when all is said and done and your treatment is
completed, you can visit the faraway places that most only
dream of or read about - hospital facilities typically have
connections with tour companies at discount rates to fill
or at least pique your wanderlust. It's a great
side-benefit!

So, is medical tourism right for you? If you're not

Eyes and bones - health problems faced by office workers

If your job demands you to face the computer for long hours
on end, are you facing health problems like tired eyes,
extreme fatigue and backache?

These problems normally arise from poor diet. Therefore,
to solve the problems, you need to change your diet ie

enough calcium for your body.

To keep eyes healthy, Vitamin A and beta carotene are the

The body converts beta carotene into vitamin A which is

Vitamin C may lead to the formation of cataracts.

As your body does not store vitamin C for long, it is
important to replenish it by eating lots of vitamin C-rich
fruits and vegetables.

As a guide, you should include the following foods which
are essential for the healthy of your eyes:

1.Carrots contain more sugar than any other vegetables, and
as mentioned above, abundant supply of beta-carotene which
is good for your eyes as well as your skin.

2.Spinach contains protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber,
calcium, phosphorus, iron, beta-carotene, riboflavin etc.

3.Tomatoes are a good source of vitamins, minerals,
carbohydrates, potassium and organic acid. Because of
their acidic nature, they protect the vitamin C from damage
or lost during high heat while cooking, thereby retaining
much of the important vitamin C.

4.Wolfberry has high concentration of beta-carotene,
vitamins A, B1, B2, C, calcium, iron etc. One very simple
but nourishing drink is the wolfberry-chrysanthemums tea
which is good for both your vision and liver.

5.Green peppers are rated the highest source of Vitamin C
among the vegetables. They are also a rich source of
fiber, calcium, phosphorus, iron and sugar.

6.Apricots are high in vitamin C, A, B1 & B2, sugar,
protein, fats, inorganic salt, thus are considered to be
nutritious fruits.

7.Chinese dates contain 14 amino acids that your body needs
and the vitamins are higher than that found in apples and
bananas.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body. Of the
body's total calcium, about 99% is in the bones and teeth
where it functions to support their structure. The
remaining 1% is present throughout your body in blood,
tissues and fluids between the cells.

You need calcium for muscle contraction, blood vessel
contraction and expansion, blood clotting, the secretion of
hormones and enzymes, and sending messages through the
nervous system.

Your body maintains a constant level of calcium in body
fluid and tissues so that your vital body processes
function efficiently. If you suffer from calcium
deficiency, you are at risk of developing osteoporosis.
This involves loss of calcium from the bones and reduced
bone density which causes bones to be brittle and liable to
fracture.

Bone loss occurs with age in all individuals. But the loss
rate usually speeds up after 35-40 years and involves the
shrinking of the skeleton. Bone loss is greatest in women
following the menopause. This is due to reduced levels of
the hormone - estrogen. Postmenopausal women are
particularly at risk from osteoporosis.

Doctors' advice is to start storing up calcium in your body
since infancy so that you are able to delay the inevitable
gradual loss of bone loss in your later years.

If you have not been doing so, now it's time to start the
calcium buildup. The risk of osteoporosis may be altered by
factors other than diet. Lack of exercise, being
underweight, smoking and alcohol can all increase the risk.

Vitamin D is needed for absorption of dietary calcium. You
can obtain Vitamin D from food and when your skin is
exposed to sunlight. Thus, adequate vitamin D from food
intake and sun exposure is essential for bone health.

Despite the goodness of calcium, excess calcium can be
harmful to health. Too much in the blood can cause nausea,
vomiting and calcium deposition in the heart and kidneys.
This usually results from excessive doses of vitamin D and
can be fatal in infants.

Some super calcium-rich foods are:

1.Milk is best known for its high calcium content, however,
many people cannot digest the lactose in milk (lactose
intolerance) resulting in nausea, bloating, gas, abdominal
cramping, diarrhea within two hours after milk is consumed.

2.For those who are lacto-intolerant and therefore cannot
drink milk, the next best alternative is to take soybeans
or its related products. Not only are soy beans high in
calcium, they are also rich in lysine and iron which are
readily absorbed by our bodies.

Lysine is classified as one of the nine "essential" amino
acids that the body needs for growth and tissue repair and
has to get from outside source ie the body can't produce
lysine on its own. A 150g of tofu contains at least 500 gm
of calcium.

3.Black sesame seeds are an extremely good source of
calcium; studies have shown that one gram of seeds contains
approximately 85 milligrams of calcium. Black sesame seeds
also have high amounts of protein, phosphorous, iron and
magnesium.

They are also said to cure constipation by regulating bowel
movements. Some Chinese sinsehs also believe black sesame
seeds can nourish our hair in keeping them looking rich and
dark.

4.Broccoli is chosen for its rich vitamin A, calcium,
vitamin B, vitamin C, folate, iron, beta carotene,
magnesium, potassium and zinc. The darker colours of the
florets, such as blue-green and purple-green contain more
beta carotene and vitamin C than those with lighter greens.

5.Celery contains proteins and several other active
compounds that promote health, including phalides, which
may help to lower cholesterol, and courmarins, that may
help to prevent cancer.

It is also a good source of calcium and phosphorus,
therefore it helps to stabilize and protect blood vessels
walls.

6.There's iodine, calcium, protein, vitamin A, B and
minerals in seaweed. It helps to rid of the cholesterol in
blood vessels, thereby preventing the vessels from clotting.

enjoy the process, not mindful of the outcome. Zen focuses
on "the present moment." Let the moment come without
rushing into it. When you rush towards it, you may lose the
feeling of self-control. On the other hand, if you relax,
you recapture it. Do not focus on "doing it." If you do,
you may end up "desiring or wanting to do it" instead of
actually "doing it."

What is greater thing to make in this world than love? Love

7 STEPS TO IMPROVING YOUR LIFE: Part 1: There's more to being healthy than eating lettuce!

Nowadays we can hardly open a magazine or a newspaper or
watch television without being told something about how to
get healthy. Eat less, exercise more, sleep more, drink
less and don't smoke. All very to the point, but is that
all there is to it?

Everybody knows that a healthy body is associated with
having a healthy mind; nevertheless we read little about
what we can do to improve things in that direction. If we
are unhappy we eat more, or drink more, or buy another
packet of cigarettes, or another bottle of alcohol. Our
sleep is interrupted and tomorrow we have no energy to
exercise or the will to do it. Then we get stressed out and
our world falls apart.

So what's the answer? Psychologists tell us that the
majority of problems in our lives develop because we have a
bad relationship with our past. In everyday terms this
means it is our reaction to what happened to us, sometimes
many years ago, that causes our problems now. That may be
difficult to believe, but it is true; to understand how
this works might help us to improve our lives now – and
hence our health!

Imagine the mind as a computer on which are stored
memories: smells, sounds, sights, events, conversations and
people. Some are happy memories, some are sad – and some
could even be labelled as viruses and better swept off the
mind's hard disc completely. Getting rid of memory viruses
is not quite as easy as getting rid of computer ones,
though it can be done. And here I hope to show you how.

Like a real computer, our mind has links which have an
uncanny knack of being able to transport us from, say, a
faintly smelled perfume in a restaurant to a quiet country
cottage garden we visited when we were scarcely five years
old. Or maybe it is the sight of the back of somebody's
head on a bus which brings back to our mind our first love
affai.

For those who are not addicted to computers, a different
way of visualising the mind may be to imagine it as a
store-cupboard, its many shelves overflowing with a
colourful array of packets and boxes.

Some of the boxes contain pleasurable items, reminders and
memories which every time we take the box down from the
shelf will enhance our current and future happiness. Others
store what can only be described as goods which have well
passed their use-by date. These are memories from our past
which have the ability to contaminate everything that
happens to us both now and in the future.

These boxes can be compared to bags of oatmeal or flour
which have been left too long in an unsuitable environment
and are now unfit for use. Imagine a bag of flour infested
by weevils, multiplying by the second, which will soon
invade anything which comes into contact with them.

The only way to rid the cupboard of its unwelcome
inhabitants is to give it a good clean out, taking care to
open every packet and box, and ensuring that only those
which have a good and useful life are kept. We must throw
out all those which are past their use-by date – as well as
those which merely find themselves in the wrong cupboard or
on the wrong shelf. Some may have been hidden behind other
boxes and ignored completely until they start moving of
their own accord like a box full of maggots. We need to
search these out and deal with them - exactly in the same
way as we would get rid of viruses and worms on our
computer.

The contents of infected memory boxes are events which at
the time they occurred made us unhappy or downright
miserable. Maybe they left us feeling inferior, neglected,
unloved, abandoned, powerless or stupid – whatever the
emotion at the time. Then as the hours, days, weeks,
months, years passed, the bad feelings (like the weevils)
multiplied and grew stronger.

The reason is that from time to time we have taken out
these memories, re-lived them, enlarged upon them,
fantasized about them in such a way that they have become
more concentrated and have bound together one on top of
another so that they have been transformed into one
seething bitterness

. Perhaps we were abandoned as a child so that when we open
that memory box something inside it does not allow us to
get close to anyone in case they too abandon us in their
turn.

Perhaps we were bullied at school and our self-confidence
was put to flight. Nowadays that memory can cause us to
imagine slights and threats where none exist, or to see
challenges around every corner. Other memory boxes might
carry a later sell-by date. We were governed by inflexible
authority in our youth, our lover left us for our best
friend, our boss promoted somebody over our head, or maybe
our children didn't show us the respect we thought we
deserved. And so on…

Like weevils the bitterness spreads into every corner of
our current life, it is picked at like an irritating sore,
so it turns into hatred and a need to blame somebody else
for our unhappiness.

Most of us know that bitterness and hatred are corrosive
emotions; emotions which can eat into our well-being in the
same way that an acid eats into metal. Yet we still give
them house-room; allow them to determine how we live our
lives. Why?

'But I can't help it, it wasn't my fault' I can hear many
of you whose shelves contain out-of-date weevil packed
boxes saying. 'It was them, they wronged me.'

That might well be true. But I would stress that it is
YOUR REACTION TO WHAT HAPPENED that is now causing you pain
– maybe 10,20,30,40 years later. YOUR PAST IS NOW MAKING
DECISIONS FOR YOU: you have given it that power.

Most of us would work very hard indeed to get rid of
weevils in our store cupboards or viruses on our computer.
So why not work hard to get rid of those in our minds
preventing us from living more happily and healthily in the
future. Maybe it is merely that we have no idea where to
start, or how to do it. In part 2 of this article you will

Sugar Feeds Cancer?

Is there a link between sugar consumption and cancer?
Seventy years ago, Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for his
discovery of glucose as the fuel that grows cancer cells.
In other words, sugar feeds cancer. Ok, this makes sense.
All of our body's tissues use glucose for fuel.

First, some boring stuff. A few new studies have followed
along these lines and have associated sugar consumption
with several types of cancer:

A study done on women in Mexico linked high carbohydrate
diets with breast cancer. The same link was made by a study
done on American women.

A small study at University of Southern California
identified a significant increase in risk for small bowel
cancer in people who consumed the most sugar in coffee, tea
and non-diet sodas. (Not the purpose of the study. It was
chance finding).

A Harvard School of Public Health study demonstrated that a
diet high in simple carbohydrate foods such as white rice,
white bread and white potatoes increased risk of pancreatic
cancer in overweight and sedentary women. Besides cigarette
smoking, this is the first risk factor identified with
pancreatic cancer. Colorectal cancer risk has been linked
to higher insulin levels, as well.

This pancreatic cancer study findings make sense. The
pancreas produces insulin – the hormone that helps the body
utilize blood glucose. Overweight people tend to be
"insulin resistant". This means the pancreas works harder
producing more insulin. It's a vicious cycle. Here's some
food for thought. Cancer rates have increased over the
last 100 years or so. Mostly, this is attributed to
increased cigarette smoking (there's no arguing that this
is the single most risk factor for many types of cancers,
not only lung), and arguably the presence of more
industrial chemicals and pollution.

Let's look at the consumption of sugar over the same
period. In 1815, the average per capita consumption of
sugar in Great Britain was 15 pounds per year. By 1974,
the consumption had risen to 120 pounds per year. Holy cow
– that's a lot of desserts!

Nowadays, in the US, the average per person yearly amount
is 150 pounds per year. This is NOT including corn syrup
and high fructose corn syrup which is the stuff that
sweetens soft drinks. The average American drinks 34
gallons of soft drinks per year. Ugly statistics.

It's also worthy to note that the use of refined white
flour started in the early 1800's in Europe. The rice that
is so popular in Southeast Asian cuisine (highly processed)
because of its color and quick cooking properties started
to be widely used after World War 2. Is there an increase
in cancers due to these dietary changes?

It would logically follow. Both white rice and white flour
cause a blood sugar spike similar to white sugar. Diets
high in white rice and white flour, known as refined
carbohydrates are associated with increased incidence of
Type II Diabetes. Not to mention the nutritional value is
very poor because of processing. It is known that the fiber
that is in brown rice and brown flour has protective effect
against certain cancers including pancreatic and…Type II
diabetes. Hmmm.

More and more, nutritionally oriented doctors are saying to
cancer patients that cutting down on sugar and refined
carbohydrates could slow the growth of the cancer (given
that "sugar fuels cancer"). But the real science is not
concrete enough for the medical community to say
unequivocally that carbs increase cancer cell
multiplication.

Since sugar gives you no nutrition (vitamins, minerals,
etc) makes the body fat and causes cavities, it can't be
good. Doctors, nutritionists and scientists may be divided
on the subject, but you can bet that I will be eating
"brown" and looking out for hidden sugar in food as much as
possible. It looks like "the writing is on the wall"….

Mental Health Insurance

Despite public awareness campaigns highlighting the issues
facing people with mental health problems and the fact that
no one is immune to developing a mental illness, people
with mental health problems are still facing unfair
discrimination, prejudice and stigma every day of their
lives, not just from members of the public but also from
businesses, banks, employers and even when it comes to
taking out an insurance policy.

The truth is, any one of us can develop a mental illness,
regardless of our age, gender, location, occupation or
social status. Actually, the statistics show that at least
one in four of us will experience some kind of mental
health problem in the space of any one year. Mental health
problems can be hugely diverse in nature and can range from
mild cases of depression and anxiety to more serious cases
of bipolar depression and schizophrenia with the types of
symptoms and the degree of intensity of these symptoms
varying from person to person. However, there are problems
to face in the outside world too.

Possibly one of the most distressing aspects of mental
illness is the isolation and social exclusion often
experienced by the sufferer purely as a result of ignorance
and misunderstanding on the part of other people and it is
this that needs to change. If we consider insurance for
example, something that most people take for granted, but
not if you have had a mental illness in the past or are
suffering from a mental health problem at the moment.

The findings of a major report on discrimination against
the mentally ill showed that Insurance companies will often
deny insurance or place exemptions on an insurance policy
when there is a history of mental health problems, even if
those problems existed many years ago and are no longer an
issue. This applies to any type of insurance and not just
life insurance either, travel insurance, mortgage
insurance, employment insurance, payment protection
insurance, all become more difficult to obtain if you have
a mental health problem or a history of mental illness.

This would appear to suggest that insurance companies as
well as many others still do not understand the issues or
the facts surrounding mental illness or the information
just isn't getting through. For example, mental health
problems can occur as an isolated case in relation to a
specific set of circumstances and once treated, will never
happen again, some types of mental illness are episodic in
nature, and most people who seek help for mental health
problems do go on to lead full and normal lives. Probably
the most important point is that just because someone is
suffering from a mental health problem doesn't
automatically mean they pose a greater risk than anyone
else. Insurance companies calculate their insurance
premiums on the level of perceived risk, which is
supposedly based on medical evidence. Perhaps this is the
area that needs to be addressed.

So what can you do about it? Certainly, if there is a case
of unfair discrimination then it is possible to sue under
the Disability Discrimination Act but according to Mind,
the leading UK charity for mental health, only a small
number of cases are taken out under this Act and of these,
few are ever successful. Similarly, the Citizen's Advice
Bureau (CAB) report that most claims against payment
protection insurance fail when mental illness is involved
as it is a common exclusion in many insurance policies.

It isn't all doom and gloom though, people do seem to be
waking up to the fact that something has gone wrong
somewhere and that people with mental illness deserve to
have the same rights as anyone else. Over in the USA for
example, a study by the Mental Health America Association
found that the majority of Americans believe that people
with mental health problems should no longer be subjected
to discrimination by health insurance companies. In fact,
some 96% of Americans believe that health insurance should
also cover mental health. Here in the UK the government are
aware of the issues surrounding mental health and exclusion
and are tightening up legislation to protect people from
unfair discrimination.

In the meantime, we would all do well to remember that
mental health problems are not only common, they are
treatable, and can affect any one of us at any time. Until
we insist that people with mental health problems receive
the same rights in society as everyone else, the problem
with insurance will persist.

Sleep: The Prescription for Better Health

History tells us that the diseases of civilization all hit
hard after the Industrial Revolution when electricity gave
us inexpensive artificial light. When you add it all up,
the national health catastrophe has been about seventy-five
years in the making.

Could the loss of sleep be destroying the endocrine clock
that controls weight gain? Could how much you sleep really
control your appetite? This may shock you. Yes. The
prescription for better health is sleep, and it's free.

"Lights Out: Sleep Sugar and Survival," a popular book by
T.S. Wiley, tells us there is simply WAY too much light in
our society today. People don't sleep enough anymore. The
real truth is that the urgent need to sleep is also the
cause of Type II diabetes and other diseases of aging.

The answer lies in the circadian rhythmicity and evolution.
This rhythm is about a 24-hour cycle in the physiological
processes of all living beings (animals, plants, fungi and

her 40's succumbs to the inability to stay asleep through
the night. It happens in peri-menopause but the truth is,
these women never really sleep well for the rest of their
lives.

melt in your mouth about an hour before bedtime. (Take one
for every hour after dark before midnight, with seasonal

Don't let children or pets wake you up at night if you can
help it. Make sure your bedroom is dark. That means lights

the bathroom during the night if you stop drinking liquid
beverages at 6PM.

Try to sleep for a minimum of nine hours or more of
uninterrupted sleep every night. Your own bedroom can be
the best anti-aging clinic in town. Try it, and your family
and friends might just ask you who your plastic surgeon is.

The Dangers Of Overprescribed ADHD Medications

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has become
the fastest growing diagnosed disorder among children under
the age of 18. Many children in countries such as the US,
New Zealand and Australia are being prescribed medications
at an alarming rate. As the FDA requires ADHD drugs to
carry warning labels, the overmedication of children with
ADHD is becoming a real concern.

Most ADHD drugs are stimulant that contain amphetamine.
