Quick Weight Loss - Not All it's Cracked up to be?

Quick Weight Loss - Not All it's Cracked up to be?
Is quick weight loss a good idea? It all depends what you
consider 'quick'. Some people follow what used to be called
'crash' diets, eating next to nothing for a limited period
of time in an attempt to lose weight as quickly as
possible. This is seldom a good idea, for several reasons.
First, super quick weight loss necessitates following such
a restrictive diet that the dieter is more than likely to
feel deprived - indeed, he or she has an excellent reason
for feeling this way!

A diet very low in calories is unlikely to provide adequate
nutrition, so it leaves you feeling hungry, deprived and
resentful. People have different reactions to this; some
rebel, while others are convinced that they don't deserve
to eat normally and that they'll never be able to, without
gainin weight. In other words, crash diets set the stage
for future eating disorders.

Also, very quick weight loss seldom stays off. That's
because most people's bodies tend to have two metabolism
'settings', probably left over from those of early humans.
When food is plentiful, it is consumed as needed, and the
excess is stored in the form of fat. But when food is
scarce (like during a restrictive diet) your body is
convinced that it's going through a 'famine' time, and
metolism slows down to conserve energy.

If you're after quick weight loss, that's the last thing
that you want, of course. And after you start to eat
normally again, your body might still think that it's in a
famine and needs to hold on to every bit of energy it can.
In fact, some chronic dieters succeed in permanently
slowing down their metabolism to the point where they end
up gaining more weight than they ever lost in the first
place. That's because lost muscle weight can sometimes be
replaced by an equal volume of fat.

The real key to quick weight loss, therefore, is not
cutting calories but increasing activity so that you burn
more of them more quickly. Consider the fact that ballet
dancers can lose up to five pounds in a single performance
- now that's quick weight loss! Of course, most of us will
never be active enough to lose weight that quickly, but
certainly a daily workout, long or short, can help get you
on the road to quick weight loss. An exercise program
coupled with watching what you eat is absolutely optimal in
allowing you to lose weight fast. Don't be tempted by
gimmicks or pills, though; at best, they are likely to be
waste of money, and at worst, they can be downright
dangerous.

What Causes Sleep Problems

What Causes Sleep Problems
Many people who find that they have trouble sleeping spend
a lot of time wondering what their problems might be. The
truth is that there are a lot of things that can keep a
person from falling asleep. If you were wondering what
causes sleep problems, then read on. Here are a few of the
reasons you might be having trouble sleeping.

Stress: Oh that stress. It causes so many problems. Stress
keeps our body from functioning normally in many areas, not
just our brains at bedtime. The truth of the matter is,
however, that stress is the number one reason that people
have sleep problems. A typical scenario involves a person
who has been having a bad day. Things just go wrong one
after the other and before this man knows it, it is time to
go to bed. He crawls under his covers, turns off his light
and lays there. He is waiting to fall asleep but instead,
he starts replaying the day in his head. Before he knows
what is happening, he has wound himself up over a
conversation that he finished six hours earlier. Suddenly
his adrenaline is pumping and his brain is racing-because
he couldn't let go of his stress.

Illness: Doctors always tell us to get as much rest and
sleep as we can when we are ill. Unfortunately for most of
us, the common cold and flu wreak havoc on our bodies and
keep us from sleeping at all. For one thing, most of us
can't breathe very well when we are sick and sleeping
depends on the body's ability to breathe. We as a society
have also become very dependent on over the counter cold
medications and often these medications have ingredients
that are meant to stimulate us so we can get through our
days, not to relax us so that we can sleep.

Environment: Our environment can also be a source of sleep
problems. When we talk about environment, however, we
aren't necessarily talking about bigger issues like global
warming. We are talking about small issues like the
temperature of our bedroom or how much noise is filtering
through the walls. It is rare to find a perfectly silent
room to sleep in and not everybody can sleep in perfect
silence. The key to falling asleep is to be comfortable,
but most of us get too caught up in what our bedrooms
should be that we forget about what they need to be.

Finding out what causes sleep problems can be a complicated
process. Often it boils down to one of the three
aforementioned categories, but sleep problems can really be
caused by just about anything. Sleep problems are usually a
symptom of something else being wrong, not the actual
problem itself. If you can't fall asleep but you aren't
sure what causes sleep problems, you might want to call
your doctor and together the two of you can figure out what
needs the most attention.

Automated Defibrillators

Automated Defibrillators
There are many different types of defibrillators. An
automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable
electronic device that diagnoses and treats cardiac arrest
by re-establishing an effective heart rhythm. This
treatment is called defibrillation, which applies an
electric shock to the entire heart muscle, uniformly
clearing the electrical activity of the heart and hopefully
allowing it to resynchronize.

An AED is called external because the operator applies the
electrode pads to the bare chest of the victim, unlike
internal defibrillators, which have electrodes surgically
implanted inside the body of a patient. There are two main
types of AEDs on the market today: semi-automatic and
fully-automatic.

Semi-automatic AEDs prompt the user to stand clear and then
to push a shock button to defibrillate. Fully-automatic
units sound a stand clear voice prompt and then deliver the
shock automatically without the user having to push a
button.

AEDs can be found in corporate and governmental offices,
shopping centers, airports, restaurants, hotels, sports
stadiums, schools and universities, community centers, and
other places where large groups of people gather and the
risk of a sudden cardiac arrest incident is likely. In some
cities, all police vehicles carry an AED. All hospitals,
fire departments and health care professionals use AEDs to
address cardiac problems as well. These AEDs are
indispensable tools for the emergency medical personnel who
use them. Therefore it is extremely important that these
devices are reliable as they can often mean the difference
between life and death for thousands of people each year.

Access Cardio Systems, Inc. Emergency Defibrillator Failures

In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issues a
worldwide recall of Access Cardio Systems, Inc. emergency
defibrillators as they were found to have faulty components
that could prevent the device from delivering a proper
shock. It was identified that two problems could occur in
these defibrillators. Some of these defibrillators have a
catastrophic failure of the shock delivery circuit board
that prevents the delivery of additional shocks. Others
were shown to turn on unexpectedly, thus causing the
"on/off" switch to become inoperative, and the batteries to
run down. After this malfunction the device will no longer
defibrillate or operate correctly. Since the recalls Access
Cardio Systems, Inc., the manufacturer of these
defibrillators, went out of business. It is not possible to
replace any disposable parts for any of the machines that
were not found to be defective. The FDA has recalled many
of these defibrillators and has advised all Access Cardio
Systems, Inc. customers to immediately cease using the
devices and to find replacement devices elsewhere.

The FDA Recalls Access Cardio Systems, Inc. Emergency
Defibrillators

As part of the FDA's oversight of medical devices the
department has a classification system that includes three
classes of recalls, Class I, II, and III. Class I recalls
are the most serious type of recall and indicates that
there is a reasonable chance that the product will cause
serious health problems or death. The FDA has issued a
Class I recall of the following Access Cardio Systems, Inc.
devices:

. AccessAED PAD (without ECG trace) Public Access
Defibrillator (Model #9100-0010-0)

. AccessAED PAD Package (without ECG trace) (Model
#9100-0015-0)

. AccessAED Package (without audio record) (Model
#9100-0150-0)

. AccessAED (without audio record) (Model #9100-0100-0)

. AccessAED (with audio record) (Model #9100-0100-1)

. AccessALS (Advanced Life Support) (Model #9100-0100-2)

. AccessAED Package (with audio record) (Model #9100-0150-1)

. AccessALS Package (Model #9100-0150-2) . In a Class II
recall, there is a possibility that the medical device will
cause temporary or reversible health problems, or there is
a remote chance that the device may cause serious health
problems.

The FDA also issued the following Class II recalls of the
Access AED and Access ALS Automated External Defibrillators
(Model #9100-0100). Individuals who have experienced health
problems or injury related to these devices should seek
legal advice as they may be able to receive monetary
benefits. At this time the company is not offering any
refunds to those organizations that purchased the faulty
devices.

Oral Cancer Prevention & Detection

Oral Cancer Prevention & Detection
The occurrence of oral cancer is more common than one might
think. In fact, it's as common as leukemia and claims more
lives each year than either melanoma or cervical cancer.
That is why the American Cancer Society recommends oral
cancer screening as a part of routine cancer-related
check-ups. However, doctors don't examine individuals for
oral cancer, dentists do.

There are several warning signs of oral cancer. Some
examples are listed below:

A sore that bleeds easily or doesn't heal;

A color change of any oral tissues;

A lump or thickening or oral tissues;

A white patch, red spot or small sore;

Pain, tenderness or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on
the lips;

Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the
tongue or jaw; and

A change in the way your teeth fit together.

Here is the very good news. Most oral cancers can be
prevented by avoiding the risk factors. Listed below are
some of the rick factors to avoid:

Tobacco use in any form;

Alcohol use combined with smoking;

Prolonged exposure to the sun;

More likely to strike after the age of 40;

More than 25% of oral cancers occur in people who do not
smoke and have no other risk factors;

Pre-cancerous spots can develop into cancer if not detected
early and removed.

In addition, according to the American Cancer Society,
eating a healthy, balanced diet of ant least five servings
of fruits and vegetables daily may provided some protection
against oral cancer.

Lip cancers can be prevented by avoiding unprotected sun
exposure, as well as pipe and cigar tobacco. In order to
detect oral cancer at any early, curable stage, your
dentist should examine the lips, tongue and mouth for any
abnormal changes during a six month examination.
Prevention is so important that oral self-examination
between dental visits is recommended. Whether you notice
something unusual or whether the dentist detects something
during an examination, the good news is that most of the
spots are harmless. The problem is that harmful spots look
identical to those that are harmless. Only specialized lab
testing can tell them apart. If you notice anything
unusual, do not delay. For your peace of mind, you should
schedule a complete dental exam. Find a local dentist who
is aware of and active in the screening for oral cancers.
A dentist is not just available to work with teeth. A
dentist is looking to all areas of the mouth to make sure
that the patient remains healthy.

Nutritional Supplements - Selecting the Right Nutritional Supplement for You!

Nutritional Supplements - Selecting the Right Nutritional Supplement for You!
The benefits of taking nutritional supplements are endless
no matter if you have a chronic illness or feel that you
are perfectly healthy. In today's world of instant
gratification, high-paced lifestyles with fast food and
on-the-go meals, it is no wonder that our society's
personal health is degenerating at an alarming rate.
Although we do have more medical resources in order to
diagnose and treat illnesses quicker and easier, wouldn't
it be more feasible to prevent an illness before it even
starts, or at best minimize the results of having a chronic
illness.

Nutritional supplements range in price and product
depending on what you are looking for. Nutritional
supplements can help aid muscle aches, cell regeneration,
providing the body with actively fighting antibodies
against harmful substances in the home or work environment.
Anti-aging benefits, balancing your daily intake of
vitamins and minerals and helping your body rid itself of
environmental toxins are just a few of the positive aspects
of using a nutritional supplement on a regular basis.

Tips For Choosing Nutritional Supplements

1. The first thing you must do before running out to your
local health food store is to examine what you take in each
day as part of your balanced diet. Are you lacking fruits
or vegetables? Should you be drinking more milk or eating
too much protein?

2. Once you have narrowed down what your natural diet is
lacking, then you can begin your search to fill that void
with a nutritional supplement. If need be, keep a food
journal for one week to recognize any patters you may have
or a specific food group that you are not getting enough of
during your regular routine.

3. Consulting your health care provider will be your next
vital step on the road to better health. You will need to
examine your strengths and weaknesses in your diet and make
calculated decisions on what supplements will fit your
lifestyle and current diet best in order to give your body
what it needs.

4. Analyze any medication that you are currently taking.
You should not go out on your own and start taking
nutritional supplements without consulting a health care
provider in order to avoid any medical or health disasters
in the future.

5. Reading the labels carefully will be an important part
of choosing which exact brand of nutritional supplement you
purchase once you have found what you need in order to
maintain your health. What it says on the label may not be
what is inside, and you may only be receiving trace amounts
of a mineral that you desperately need.

6. Many multi-vitamins do not have the amount of isolated
vitamins or minerals you are lacking, or you may be
overloading your system with too much of one type of
nutritional supplement if you are taking more than one
product during the same time period. Utilize the staff in
your local health store; let them know what you are
currently taking or what you are looking for in order to
get recommendations for your nutritional supplements.

Nutrient dense supplements are nutritional supplements that
are packed full of natural occurring nutritional compounds
from fresh whole live foods. These specific supplements are
especially beneficial for those looking for an all-in-one,
natural and convenient way to receive a balance of minerals
and supplements. These products do come in a variety of
types and those, which are concentrated to over 100
nutritional elements, can in fact save you money in the
long run by limiting the amount of separate nutritional
supplements that you would have purchased previously to
obtain the same results.

Although some nutritional supplements look appealing and
healthy on the label, often our bodies are not able to
absorb the entire benefit of those capsules. If you are
looking for a nutritional supplement that can bypass the
digestive system and is able to be absorbed right into your
body to maximize the effects than a liquid nutritional
supplement is the best choice for you. If you are spending
money in order to purchase the vitamins and minerals you
are lacking, you will want to have them available for your
body to take advantage of them wouldn't you?

With some research and a little help from your health care
professional, you can use a combination of your own diet
along with nutritional supplements in order to take
advantage of the benefits that your body requires in order
to stay healthy and live longer.

How Does Acupuncture Work

How Does Acupuncture Work
Acupuncture healthcare is an ancient medical practice that
has been used for more than two thousand years. It is one
of traditional Chinese medicine therapies and a different
form of remedy. How does acupuncture work? The theory
behind this is that energy called qi flows through your
body. This qi can affect the emotional, spiritual, physical
and mental conditions of a person. In acupuncture
alternative medicine very fine needles are inserted into
the skin at specific points on the body to correct the
imbalances in energy. This harmonious balance of qi is the
basis for good health.

What does Acupuncture do? Primarily it is used to alleviate
discomfort and pain and to stimulate the body to heal
itself naturally. Acupuncture healthcare can help treat a
number of conditions such as migraines, post-operative
pain, menstrual cramps, asthma and nausea.

Acupuncture alternative medicine is safe for pregnant women
and has been used successfully to ease bladder discomfort,
low back pain, morning sickness, mood swings and other
complaints. This practice can help with delivery and also
can correct a breech position. It is also found to be a
most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. Very
often it is combined with herbs to treat female problems
such as unexplained infertility, repeated miscarriages,
polycystic ovarian syndrome and luteal phase defect.

Acupuncture healthcare has been combined with traditional
cancer treatment to ease symptoms related to the cancer
treatment or cancer with great success. This procedure is
also used to reduce the withdrawal symptoms for addictions
such as those people trying to quit smoking or drugs.

Acupuncture is also used in the area of cosmetic. Needles
are inserted on specific points on the body and face to
stimulate production of elastin and collagen. This will
plump up the skin and smooth the wrinkles. The result is a
healthy, wrinkle free and glowing complexion. This natural
procedure has no side effects such as scarring, swelling
and long recovery time.

In China acupuncture is also used as a general anesthetic
during some types of surgery and at childbirths. The
patient is conscious through out the operation and does not
suffer from postoperative dizziness. However, alternative
medicine acupuncture is not suitable for conditions such as
broken ribs or bones that require surgery.

Acupuncture is an effective form of alternative medicine.
It is considered to be a safe form of treatment and has few
side effects. This therapy is one of the oldest and most
widely used medical practices in the world. Today
Acupuncture healthcare is gaining popularity with a lot of
people especially when it carries few risks. In additions,
it is also inexpensive, drug free, adaptable and
uncomplicated.

When acupuncture is used in combination with other
conventional therapies the result is far better than using
just the conventional therapies alone. Acupuncture has
proven to be more superior to atropine injection when
treating gastrointestinal spasm. Hence, today many
physicians are using acupuncture healthcare in conjunction
with other medical treatments or as an alternative medicine
to medical remedies. Be sure to seek out only licensed
acupuncturists who have undergone the required training if
you choose to give acupuncture alternative medicine a try.

Women's Fitness Myth's, The Rebel Fitness Mythbuster Debunks Them All! Part 2

Women's Fitness Myth's, The Rebel Fitness Mythbuster Debunks Them All! Part 2
In part one, we debunked the first five women's fitness
myths. Now, in the final part of this series, we will be
debunking myths six through nine.

6. Restricting calories and doing more cardio is the best
way to lose weight.

It is true that you will lose weight following this advice.
However, it will bite you in the butt in the end. No pun
intended. Here's why. Restricting calories will
definitely make you lose weight. However, this is not
optimal. When you restrict calories, your body will react
by slowing your metabolism down. When this happens, and
you resume eating normally, your metabolism is even slower
than it was before. So, when you resume eating what you
normally ate before you started restricting calories, you
will gain even more weight because your metabolism has
slowed down that much more. So what about doing more
cardio? Again, doing more cardio will cause you to lose
weight. However, here comes another big bite in the butt.
Doing too much cardio will cause you to lose precious
muscle mass. Losing muscle mass will cause your metabolism
to slow down even more! Put those two together and you
have a recipe for disaster. Not to mention, when you are
doing this to yourself, you are completely robbing yourself
of essential nutrients for your health. Here's what will
happen: Nails become brittle. Hair breaks. Skin tone is
lost. Injuries are more common. Illnesses are more
frequent. Mood and mental health are depressed. Sounds like
a blast huh? BUSTED!

7. I should skip meals to lose more weight.

Yeah sure. You should skip more red lights and stop signs
to get to where you are going faster also. What a joke.
How many people do you know that eat only once a day or
skip a meal to lose more weight. Like the previous myth,
the same things will happen. In addition, your metabolism
is going to slow way down. Think about this. Our
ancestors were hunters and gatherers. They ate all day
long. Other than the fact they were moving frequently,
they kept a rather high metabolism. Our metabolism is not
that much different from our ancestors. Here are the keys
to this little puzzle: Eat smaller, more frequent meals.
This, in turn, keeps your blood sugar stable all day long,
and keeps your energy stable. Also, it tells your body that
you are not in a state of famine and will not slow your
metabolism down. Oh it feels so good. BUSTED!

8. Eating after a certain time will make you gain weight.

Most of the tendency here is not to eat past a certain time
usually after 7PM. However, this is also another common
fallacy I see all the time. Most people are backwards in
the way they should be eating. You need an abundant supply
of energy in the morning and the eating should taper off
toward the evening when you are winding down and the energy
requirements are not as high. You know as well as I do,
the majority has this one completely backwards.
Additionally; it really doesn't matter what time you eat.
They key here is what kind of energy balance are you in?
Negative? Positive? Equilibrium? If you eat and continue
to stay in the negative energy balance, you'll still lose
weight, possibly not as much depending on the calorie
content of what is eaten. Lastly, having a healthy
nutritious meal or snack late in the evening is going to
help your body recover faster. When you are asleep, your
body is repairing itself from the day's stresses. Having a
new supply of nutrients added to your body prior to sleep
is an excellent way to aid in recovery.

9. I haven't lost any weight! The weight scale say so!

Do me a favor. Throw that piece of crap out the window, or
hide it in the closet until you can stop compulsively
judging yourself by a weight scale. Why? There are a
couple of reasons. Weight Fluctuation: Your body's
weight can fluctuate as much as five pounds in one day.
Water intake: Your water intake has an enormous effect on
your weight. Time of day: Think you will weigh different
first thing in the morning than you will last thing at
night? Try a more objective method: Try body fat testing
instead. Your body composition can change, but your weight
might not. 5.Try measurements instead: waist, arms, legs,
hips, etc.

Yep, my job is done here! Another myth BUSTED!

As you can see, there is a lot of BS floating around out
there. So please, critically think about what you are
hearing. Two, do not take anything you hear about fitness
at face value unless it is from a qualified fitness
professional. And by a qualified fitness professional, I
mean somebody that has been in the industry for years, or a
degreed professional, not someone who went out and received
a weekend certification. Until next time, train hard,
train smart, don't stop believing, and don't take your eyes
off the prize!

Foods and herbs for resisting disease and fighting infection

Foods and herbs for resisting disease and fighting infection
Back when I was a kid the toy section in most department
stores sold kaleidoscopes. These were cylindrical shaped
tubes through which you could look at one end. At the
opposite end were a few pieces of colored glassy that when
turned council form an infinite number of geometric
patterns.

In some ways, your own immune system is much like this
apparatus that I enjoyed in my childhood. With only a
limited number of weapons, it puts up an almost endless
variety of defenses against diseases.

Personal immunity is threatened whenever there are antigens
in the system. Antigens are viruses, bacteria, cancer
cells, fungi, protozoa, particles and anything else that
might challenge the integrity of personal immunity. In
fact, antigens are the very reason that an immune defense
exists at all.

The immune system employs different methods of fighting
these antigens. One way is for some immune cells to "eat"
antigens; these specialized white blood cells are called
phagocytes. Another way is to cut a hole in the surface of
the bacteria's cell. This then destroys the bacteria by
permitting water, sodium, and other substances to leak in
and out of the cell, upsetting its homeostasis or state of
steadiness. Poison can be used to kill antigens. Or a cover
can be slapped over that part of the antigen which does the
damage (The toxic sited).

There are different types of white blood cells, each with
its own name, size, shape, and function. Besides a variety
of phagocytes and leukocytes, there are also a number of
different lymphocytes originating in the lymph glands of
the body: T-cells, natural killer cells, helper cells,
suppressor cells, and B-cells. But behind these immune
troops is further backup in the form of the complement
system, immunoglobulins, interferon, and interleukin.
Everything that I've just mentioned forms your defense
network. And as antigens float around in your system trying
to form some pattern of disease, your immune system like
the kaleidoscope mentioned earlier is forming endless
arrangements to stop this process from ever happening.

Garlic to the rescue

In keeping with my medical friend's recommendation, I wish
to share with you something about garlic. Garlic, as most
herbalists know, is outstanding for high blood pressure.
But no one seems to understand exactly how it works within
the body to accomplish this.

That is, until now. I've fin ally figured out how the stuff
works so well for hypertension. Now high blood pressure, as
everyone knows, is induced by stress. And stress, of
course, is caused by people. Therefore, it stands to
reason, that if you eat lots of garlic, it will make the
people go away, which in turn relieves the stress. And when
this sequence of events happens, then blood pressure
returns to normal.

WHAT IS ALCOHOLIC LIVER DISEASE?

WHAT IS ALCOHOLIC LIVER DISEASE?
Alcoholic liver disease is an ever-growing health concern.
I have experienced this in my immediate family and strongly
believe that you or someone you know has a drinking
problem. In this section on liver disease, I reveal what
the liver does and the symptoms of a dysfunctional, alcohol
induced liver.

What Is The Liver?

The liver is located just under your right ribs and beneath
the right lung. The liver is also the largest organ in
your body that has a pyramid shape and divided into left
and right lobes. The liver also receives blood from two
sources: The portal vein carries nutrient rich blood from
the intestines and the hepatic artery delivers oxygen rich
blood directly from the heart.

What Are Important Functions Of The Liver?

Secretes bile into the intestines to help absorb nutrients
an example of this would be fats.

The liver plays an important role in eliminating harmful
toxic wastes from the body.

Creates most of the clotting factors that help us to not
bleed too much when you get a cut.

Stores and breaks down many of the nutrients absorbed from
the intestines that are needed for the body to function.

What Is Alcoholic Liver Disease?

A chronic or acute inflammation of the liver is induced by
alcohol abuse. A number of years of excessive drinking can
cause alcoholic liver disease. Acute alcoholic hepatitis
can result from binge drinking. Malnutrition comes from
consuming empty calories from alcohol and a reduction in
appetite. The actual toxicity of the ethanol, genetic
factors and individual susceptibility to alcohol-induced
liver all play a role in the development of alcoholic liver
disease.

What Are The Symptoms Of Alcoholic Liver Disease?

Fever

Jaundice

Nausea

Loss Of Appetite

Dry Mouth

Fatigue

Abdominal pain and tenderness

Mental confusion

Also bloody or dark bowel movements

Redness on feet or hands

Vomiting blood

Breast development in males

Alcoholic liver disease is a pandemic problem that should
be brought out in the open through more education and
prevention.

Fast Weight Loss: It may be easier than you think!

Fast Weight Loss: It may be easier than you think!
If a weight loss program seems too good to be true - for
example, if it offers you incredibly fast weight loss, like
a pound a day or more - you have good reason to be
suspicious. No legitimate program can rightly claim to help
you lose incredible amounts of weight at this type of speed
- it just wouldn't be healthy, and would not normally occur
ina a healthy body. However, there are natural methods of
fast weight loss that may allow you to lose a substantial
amount of weight in a short time. It's all a matter of
balancing how many calories you take in and how many you
burn.

If you want to stay at the same weight, you should ingest
as many calories as you burn. If you want to lost weight,
you should burn more than you ingest. If you want your
weight loss to be fast, you should burn a lot more than you
ingest. For this to happen, you have to cut your food
intake and increase your exercise all at the same time.

There are not tricks to weight loss, really. You just have
to burn more than you take in - plain and simple. Programs
such as Weight Watchers can help you keep track of what you
eat, but so can various books that are on the market. Then,
enrolling at a gym is your first step to guaging how much
you burn while exercising, and improving that figure. A lot
of gym equipment tells you how many calories you have
burned while you use it. This is a good first step, though
it is, of course, just an estimate based on your weight and
how much energy you are putting out. A personal trainer
(available at many gyms, even community center gyms) can
also give you information like that.

It doesn't stop there, though. Fast weight loss requires
you to increase your activity level every chance you get -
walking instead of driving to the store, taking the stairs
instead of the elevator, and so on. Then, look at
decreasing your calorie intake - but don't go under the
levels recommended by the board of health, generally 1200
for a woman and 1500 for a man. Some diets do take you
below this calorie level, but at a risk to your health -
it's hard to meet your nutritional requirments when eating
a restrictive diet.

In fact, depending on your activity level, you may well
need to eat more than that minimum number of calories
daily. Pay attention to how hungry you are, and learn to
differentiate true hunger from just wanting to eat. A
weight loss program should allow you to eat enough food so
that you don't feel hungry.

Dark Chocolate and Açaí: Wonder Drugs Or Too Good To Be True?

Dark Chocolate and Açaí: Wonder Drugs Or Too Good To Be True?
If you happen to be a "chocoholic," there is some good news
for you: some chocolate is not only not as unhealthy as
previously thought, but many doctors now actually encourage
the public to consume it. One particular type of chocolate
can be beneficial to your gums, eyes, heart, arteries and
even your entire immune system. It can also help lower
cholesterol levels and balance both blood pressure and
blood sugar. However, before you run out to buy candy bars
in bulk, know that not just any kind of chocolate will
provide such benefits.

Dark chocolate, created from natural cocoa beans, has been
recommended for consumption even up to three times a day.
This is because the cocoa bean is the food with the highest
levels of antioxidants ever, which protect the body from
oxidative stress involved with aging. Other foods, such as
red wine, tea, and select few fruits and vegetables also
offer similar health benefits, but cocoa still tops them
all when it comes to the sheer number of antioxidants.
These antioxidant compounds are called flavanols, which
presumably give dark chocolate its health benefits.

Ironically, flavanols actually taste very bitter, so many
companies that make candy bars take out most of the
flavanols to make the chocolate taste better. This
obviously strips the chocolate of most of its health
benefits. Furthermore, there is no way of knowing which
candy bar is healthiest, as companies do not indicate how
many flavanols are left in the final product. This is why
buying dark chocolate candy bars simply to get the health
effects may not work.

Also note that milk chocolate does not offer the same
health perks. The darker the chocolate, the more flavonoids
containing flavanols there are, meaning that milk chocolate
offers fewer health benefits than dark chocolate. Clearly
this indicates that white chocolate offers even fewer; in
fact, it contains no flavonoids.

The best way to take advantage of the health benefits
offered in dark chocolate is to buy the darkest chocolate
available with the least amount of added ingredients,
perhaps from a health food store. Another option is to buy
one of the recent products in which dark chocolate is
infused with the açaí berry, an antioxidant that
helps reduce heart and vascular disease. Dark chocolate and
açaí go together well because both have tons of
antioxidants, and açaí helps flavanol-filled dark
chocolate taste good.

But even if you find such a product, realize that it is not
a wonder drug. Despite its health benefits, dark chocolate
still contains calories and fat, and too much of either is
unhealthy. Even too many dark chocolate and açaí
products can be harmful. This is why doctors recommend some
dark chocolate, red wine, or other treats that have some
health benefits daily, but do advise patients to limit
their intake, as too much of anything can be detrimental.

Best Weight Loss Program

Best Weight Loss Program
Most weight loss programs are related to bad habits. It is
this simple, eliminate your bad habits and you will lose
weight effortlessly. Obviously, the first step is to
determine what your bad habits are. Some of the first steps
are to observe when you overeat and to try and figure out
what triggers your reactions.

However, the single most important aspect of our daily
lives is what we eat. Becoming fat does not happen in a
vacuum. There are foods that are designed for human
consumption and then there is our modern diet.

Every single animal in nature has a diet that is
appropriate for its species. Maybe you have not thought
about it, but animals in nature are not overweight. Also,
and perhaps even more important, is that animals in their
natural habitat do not suffer from degenerative diseases.

So, the question is, what is the appropriate diet for us
humans to consume. The answer is simple. It consists of
natural foods. This includes whole grains, vegetables,
beans and fruit.

This brings me to the next point. Dieting does not work.
At best, dieting creates a yo-yo effect of losing and
gaining the weight back. Often times, gaining back more
weight than when we began.

The secret to a successful weight loss program is quite
simple. In order to lose weight and regain your health it
is imperative that you change your lifestyle. Once you
accomplish this everything will fall into place.

What does changing your lifestyle actually involve? What
it comes down to is three simple components. These are the
three aspects that you should master:

1/ Change your diet. This step is two fold. The one side
is to eliminate the foods that are harmful to you. This
includes almost all the processed and prepared foods. It
should also be obvious that this includes fast food.

The other side to this step is to incorporate whole,
natural foods into your diet. It is simple enough to go
online and to do research to determine what foods are
healthy to eat.

2/ Exercise. It is not enough to change your diet and sit
on your rump. A daily exercise program is crucial. It does
not hove to be anything fancy. Find something that you
enjoy doing. You can mix and match. For example you can
walk some days and play tennis the next. The key to this
is about an hours workout each day.

3/ Making up you mind. I saved this for last but it is the
most important. Without this your chances of success are
dramatically diminished.

It is not enough to simply write down what you wish to
accomplish. Similarly, it is not sufficient to put
pictures up on your fridge.

What you have to somehow manage is to plant this goal so
deep into the fiber of your being that it over rides
everything. This is something that you can only do for
yourself.

When you do manage to accomplish this, everything that you
do will bring you closer to your goal, even your missteps.
If you comprehend the enormity of this you will appreciate
how powerful this step is.

That pretty much says it all. This best weight loss
program is one that you design for yourself. Yes, it takes
work. Of course, it will not be easy. But stop and
consider, the results will be extremely gratifying.

Do You Know The Difference Between Natural and Synthetic Hormones?

Do You Know The Difference Between Natural and Synthetic Hormones?
Natural hormones are substances that are like those
produced naturally. Synthetic hormones are close enough to
the natural kind to get into the cell and perform many of
the same functions, but they don't provide all of the
benefits and they do have some definite problems.

As an example, both natural progesterone and the synthetic
counterparts, which are called progestins, help prevent
cancer like uterine cancer. However, only natural
progesterone protects against breast cancer, normalizes the
fatty acid profile, restores normal sex drive, and
regulates sleep patterns.

Progestins, on the other hand, contribute to mood swings,
fatigue, depression, insomnia, bloating, breast tenderness,
weight gain, and anxiety ' of which none are side effects
of natural progesterone.

Synthetic estrogens are altered so that drug companies make
them individual and patent them. They tend to be stronger
and more toxic than estrogens manufactured naturally in the
human body; and so they increase the odds of having
symptoms of estrogen dominance, which are weight gain,
bloating, anxiety, depression, and low blood sugar, and
from estrogen-related diseases like breast and uterine
cancer. The natural forms of estrogen, i.e. estradiol,
estrone, and estriol, tend to be safer.

It's important to note that most studies of hormone
replacement therapy involve the use of synthetic hormones.
Don't assume that all hormone replacement therapy brings
about the same results we've seen in the recent studies,
all of which used synthetic hormones. We're in need of
some valid long-term studies on the effects of the natural
and synthetic versions of both progesterone and estrogen.

Estrogen and progesterone work as opposites to maintain
hormonal balance. But they also help sensitize receptors
for each other throughout the body. That is, progesterone
helps the body take up and use estrogen, and estrogen helps
the body take up and use progesterone. Estrogen is
responsible for the creation of the soft female form.

It promotes cell growth, which is why it can be dangerous
in the presence of certain estrogen-dependent cancers, like
those of the breast, ovaries or uterine lining. It's also
responsible for increased body fat, retention of sale and
fluid, and a decrease in the sex drive. All of this makes
sense when the body is being prepared for motherhood.

Progesterone, on the other hand, helps keep estrogen in
line. While estrogen promotes the buildup of the uterine
lining, progesterone triggers the breakdown and shedding of
that lining. Estrogen is almost never prescribed without
progesterone for a woman who has an intact uterus, because
estrogen will cause overgrowth of the uterine lining, which
can lead to cancer. While estrogen may increase body fat,
progesterone helps the body use that fat for energy.
Estrogen impairs the sex drive; progesterone restores it.
Estrogen increases blood clotting; progesterone normalizes
it and, together, these two hormones keep the female
reproductive system, and may other bodily functions,
working together.

During perimenopause, when ovulation becomes sporadic,
there will be some months when there's no substance
produced to manufacture progesterone. During these months,
your progesterone levels are close to zero ' as low as
those found in postmenopausal women. Yet estrogen
production will continue as if nothing has happened. This
creates a phenomenon called estrogen dominance, in which
estrogen is allowed to run unchecked without the normal
balancing effect of progesterone.

The result is an unhappy long list of symptoms familiar to
many women experiencing perimenopause, which include weight
gain, bloating, breast tenderness, low blood sugar,
fatigue, lack of sex drive, migraine headaches,
irritability, and emotional hypersensitivity. These are
all common indications of too much estrogen and not enough
progesterone. If this sounds like PMS, that's because PMS
is often due to estrogen dominance as well.

Why Kettlebell training is so incredible for fat loss

Why Kettlebell training is so incredible for fat loss
In all my years as a personal trainer and fitness advisor I
have never seen such an amazing piece of equipment as the
Russian Kettlebell for fat loss. Not only are they
incredibly effective for rapid weight loss but they are
cheap to buy, require very little space and are fun to use.
In fact, I have never come across a client that has told me
they do not enjoy working out with kettlebells.

Here's the facts about kettlebell training and why they
should be your number one choice for fat loss, no matter
who you are:

1. You burn more fat in less time

Kettlebell training is different from conventional weight
training because it focuses on the body's natural
movements, these natural movements leave no muscles
untouched. So rather than exercising just your arms, legs,
or back, kettlebell training works the entire body as a
complete unit.

This type of training is very demanding, imagine how much
more oxygen and energy is required to fuel 600+ muscles
rather than just 1 or 2! The consequences of this are
phenomenal; you can get an incredible workout in just 20
minutes and burn huge amounts of fat compared with regular
long drawn out exercise.

2. Increases your metabolism

Your body has evolved to function in certain movement
patterns whether it's bending over to pick up a child or
squatting down to sit into a chair. It is these exact
movement patterns that Kettlebell training mimics and as
you replicate these patterns your body will reward you by
getting stronger and building muscle tone fast. I have
never seen such quick gains in muscle tone than through
kettlebell training.

Muscle tone is very important when it comes to fat loss
because muscle is very metabolically active which means it
constantly needs energy to maintain its size. The great
news is that its favourite source of energy is body fat, so
the more muscle tone you can develop the more fat you will
burn, even at rest.

3. Burn calories even after exercise

The "Afterburn" or EPOC (excessive post-exercise oxygen
consumption) is another great reason why kettlebells are so
effective for fat loss. Certain intensive exercise, like
kettlebell training, that drives your body into the
anaerobic zone with create "Afterburn" or EPOC.

Following a kettlebell session the body has to work hard to
return itself back to equilibrium: re-oxygenation of
tissues, clearance of lactic acid, glycogen refuelling etc.
This process demands energy and this energy comes from, you
guessed it, your fat stores. So unlike other forms of
exercise you will actually be burning calories after your
workout, and for up to 24 hours too.

How to Increase Your Energy....and Quickly Too!

How to Increase Your Energy....and Quickly Too!
Do you wake up in the morning feeling hardly any different
than when you went to bed? Does the most simple thing make
you feel washed out and lifeless? Do you feel you're alone
and no-one understands? The good news is that you're not
alone and I can guarantee that I do really understand.
There are many ways to increase your energy and to feel
better today, coconut oil is one of them.

I could talk for hours about coconut oil and its many
benefits, but I really want to let you know how beneficial
it is for energy levels. Having been there in the past
with fatigue myself I know that sometimes you don't even
have the energy to try out new things, which is why I am
excited about suggesting such an easy thing to get you
started.

Very little effort is needed for you to achieve amazing
results; you simply have to decide how to get it into your
body. Although 3-4 tablespoons of oil is recommended per
day, Bruce Fife, the author of Coconut Cures claims that
even consuming half a teaspoon a day will have beneficial
effects. You can add to this further by following the
suggested recipes for hair and skin care too. Doing this
improves you on the outside AND on the inside as the
coconut oil is absorbed through your skin.

It's so easy - you can take it straight out the tub like a
spread, you can melt it down and take it as a liquid, use
it as conditioner, a make-up remover (which I had forgotten
about and having just run out I was pleased to read that).
You can add it to your cooking; you can use it as a body
moisturiser. There are many more uses that I just can't
squeeze into this article.

As I mentioned before, an excellent book to read to
appreciate the full benefits is Coconut Cures, Preventing
and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut by Bruce
Fife. It is published in the USA but in today's modern
world you should be able to get it shipped anywhere. The
book is featured at http://www.simplycoconut.com where you
can also find out about coconut products and what to look
for.

Also, try http://www.coconut-connections.com for more uses
of this amazing oil. In fact, you'll wonder why you've
never heard of it before.

You can buy coconut oil in good health food shops. There
are different qualities and I would recommend using the
very highest quality virgin coconut oil. The high grade
oil will have been taken through a different process to the
cosmetic coconut oil. In my opinion if you're going to try
it, you might as well try it properly and use the best you
can afford.

You cannot overdose on coconut oil; it is not a drug but a
food. It is said to reduce cholesterol, protect against
heart disease and help you to lose weight. It is well
known that you are much more likely to be harmed by a
coconut falling on your head than by eating one!

Impossible To Regain Weight After Weight Loss Surgery?

Impossible To Regain Weight After Weight Loss Surgery?
When you have weight loss surgery, your worries about your
weight are over.....now that you've lost weight from your
surgery, you don't need to think about weight issues,
right? Weight loss surgery is not a cure for your weight
woes. The surgery does not do all of the work for you. As
we know, weight loss surgery is a tool. Weight regain can
occur. It is a tool that WE choose to use. If you want to
lose ' choose to use your surgery.

If you've gained weight after your surgery, medical
conditions and anatomic surgical issues need to be
addressed by a physician and necessary blood tests.
Regular follow-ups throughout a post-operative patient's
life are important. By regular physical exams, follow-ups,
and blood tests potential problems can be detected early
and treated.

When health and medical issues have been eliminated as a
cause for weight regain, the next step is to focus on the
behavioral changes required for long-term weight loss
success. Problems with a surgical procedure are usually
not the cause for weight regain. More common factors are
returning to the old habits that caused us to need weight
loss surgery in the first place.

If you've regained weight, it is common to feel as though
we have failed. After all, we've failed to lose weight and
keep it off each time we've tried. So many times during
our pre-dieting career, we felt like failures each time the
diets did not work long-term. You are not a failure!! It
is common for weight regain after weight loss surgery. You
are not alone. The great aspect of weight loss surgery is
that if you have regained weight, you can lose it. Your
tool is with you to help in losing regained weight.

If you are concerned about weight regain or have gained
weight that you'd like to lose, here are some suggestions
to get back on track and stay on track:

* Check your protein intake each day. Are you eating
enough protein? Protein provides satiation and is
important for maximizing weight loss. At meals, eat
protein first. One suggestion is to eat two bites of dense
protein for every one bite of vegetable, fruit or complex
carbohydrate serving.

* Are you drinking a minimum of 64 ounces of water daily?
Water is water. You can flavor your water with the
powdered flavorings without carbonation. Water is not
soda, tea, coffee, or juice. Water is a key component of
getting back on track. Many times we interpret thirst as
hunger. Make sure you are continually hydrating throughout
the day. Sip your water throughout the day to maximize the
hydration to your body.

* How is your activity level? Are you exercising
regularly? Have you decreased the frequency and/or
intensity of your exercise? It is also the small
activities. Take the stairs instead of the escalator,
select a parking place furthest from the store, take a walk
instead of sitting during your work breaks. If you want to
lose it, you must move it.

* Grazing is a sure thing in regaining weight from surgery.
Grazing is different than snacking. Snacks are planned;
grazing is unplanned eating that usually lasts for an
extended period of time. Rather than eat regular meals
with planned snacks, grazing can creep back in our lives
very easily. Grazing often leads to consuming too many
calories, which causes weight gain. You can eat around
your surgery by grazing. You don't fill your pouch enough
to register that you've eaten yet you consume excess
calories. Usually grazing is on high carbohydrate, sugary
foods.

* Identify and stop emotional eating. Zero into your
emotions rather than eat over them. Check in with yourself
if you're eating from physical hunger or head hunger. Head
hunger feeds emotions and can result in weight gain.
Physical hunger feeds your body and results in good levels
of energy and health.

If you've regained weight, think back to a time
post-operatively when you were successfully losing weight.
What were you doing? What habits had you created that led
to your success? Have you returned to old habits that made
you heavy? To lose weight, go back to the basics of what
worked for you. You were successful in losing weight, you
can do it again.

The significant weight loss that occurs within the first
period of time after surgery is a big motivator. Food
urges return and we must learn to cope with food urges and
emotions without acting on them by eating. Isn't it more
important to feel good about ourselves than make an
unhealthy choice and gaining weight?

Weight loss surgery is a wonderful tool to lose weight.
Success from our surgery depends on adopting lifelong
healthy habits that include changes in our nutrition,
exercise, and behavioral health. What you eat and how you
eat changes after surgery, but the benefits of weight loss
and improved health are yours. Your surgical tool is yours
to use; for weight regain you can choose to lose.
