Attention Deficit Disorder - how does it affect your child's schooling and education?

Attention Deficit Disorder - how does it affect your child's schooling and education?
Teaching a child with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) can
be a difficult task. Many schools have identified the
problem and addressed the issue because substantial
developments have been made to recognize the problem.
However there are still some schools lagging behind.
Unfortunately these schools are not well placed to help
individuals diagnosed with ADD.

The way ADD influences a classroom is observed well before
any individual diagnosis is completed. It may be observed
(for example) in a boy, following his classmates to snatch
their books, or in a young girl sitting in the corner and
playing with her hair, with her mind focused somewhere
else. It is usually the teacher who first recognizes that
a student is having difficulty focusing on class
activities. However identifying the problem is just the
first step, and the most difficult part is changing the
inattentive or hyperactive attitude.

Treatment of the disorder starts when everyone acknowledges
it and a diagnosis is carried out. It's important to
decide whether medical intervention is required, since that
would determine a course of treatment. There are a number
of schools, which quite inhumanly emphasize that the child
suffering from ADD be given medicines. Some schools
though, take a more logical approach and comply with the
wishes of the child's parents.

Whether your child is able to cope with the situation will
often be determined by the type of school he or she attends
and how proactive they are. In an ideal environment, your
child should attend a school that understands the
effectiveness of working together with parents, taking
stock of your particular circumstances and respecting your
decisions. Regrettably some schools lack this
open-mindedness. Communities that are small and
financially disadvantaged (compared to other communities),
have the habit of being far too conservative and are often
not able (or willing) to cater for children who have
special needs.

ADD often makes children difficult to instruct . . .
generally they are chaotic and difficult to control. For
these reasons many schools refuse to accommodate such
unruly children. Nonetheless, you need to ensure your
child is not treated as a second-class citizen.

There are certain schools who will very promptly strive to
put the child with the disorder in corrective classes, even
if the child's level of intelligence is not suitable to
that form of action. In many cases, this step is taken so
as not to disrupt normal class schedules and other
children. However, as a parent, you should not accept an
unjustified negative categorization of your child.

Finally remember that as parents it's essential that your
child knows you are always there for him or her. If any
decision taken by the Class Teacher or School Principal
disadvantages the well-being of your child, you should
discuss it with them and come-up with a plan that ensures
the very best outcomes for your child.

Hot Tub Benefits of Ownership

Hot Tub Benefits of Ownership
Having a Hot Tub provides many benefits and these have been
known to man since time Immemorial. For many thousands of
years that magical liquid water has been a great relief for
many of the ailments that the fabric of life brings to us
mortals. In Times long ago in Egypt, Rome, Greece & Spain
it was a very normal practice to enjoy long hot soaks, not
only was it considered to be a ritual but much more than
that it was regarded as a health cure known to bring relief
from the aches, pains and stress of life.

The word Spa comes from the famous celebrated Belgian
health resort, which has a natural Hot Spring and it is
said by some to be short for "solus par aqua," and as
Solus stands for Health and par for and aqua water then we
seem to get in the English language "health through
water." In ancient times, there were small water pools,
which had warm water piped into them from natural hot
springs. We still have those today but these often smell of
sulphur and are not always pleasant. The belief sometimes
expressed but which I do not accept is that it is only
natural hot springs that have any beneficial healing effect
as the chemicals in these pools are supposed to have
magical cures, but it is in fact simply just the warm
water that does the trick! A modern Hot Tub Spa with the
latest fully adjustable water and air jets is in my view
much superior to a natural hot spring.

A Modern Hot Tub does not have that thousand-year-old
setting but it is undoubtedly wonderful therapy, and the
water is better for your skin. As soon as one is immersed
in a Hot Tub and as you begin to enjoy the warm spa water,
it causes two very beneficial physiological events to take
place in your body.

Firstly of these, which is a scientific fact, is that it
makes the capillaries in the body to increase thereby
providing an increased blood flow to through your body and
of course to your skin. Naturally, an increased blood flow
blood means better circulation and of course with goes the
life force that makes up the Human Body with the nutrients
that we need to maintain life.

Secondly, it slightly increases your heart rate, which adds
to the increased blood flow throughout your whole body. As
we are made up mainly by water something like in excess of
90% is water, the fluids in our bodies are neutral (or
nearly neutral) in weight. Our fluids then identify with
the water in the spa (natural buoyancy) which means that
the pressure of gravity on our circulatory system is
reduced. This has the effect of making the distance between
your heart and your feet much less. Although in truth, of
course, this is not the case.

The blood that the Chinese medicine doctor's call stagnant
(really slow) is now able to move much more freely and it
does so because of open capillaries (heat), and buoyancy
(water).

There is one very important thing that one should do to get
the full benefit and that is to let go and just relax. Then
the beneficial benefits of Hydrotherapy and Hydro massage
help to provide respite and healing. Simply the blood flow
is now in your body and not in your head, and your mind can
start to slow down and relax and be in a much more peaceful
state.

Why Hoodia Diet Pills Guarantee Weight Loss

Why Hoodia Diet Pills Guarantee Weight Loss
Many people are aware that hoodia diet pills are derived
from the Hoodia plant. This is a succulent, and there are
more than 20 varieties of the hoodia plant, but our
interest is focused exclusively on the Hoodia Gordonii,
which alone contains the magic ingredient, a new molecule
named P57 by the team that discovered its amazing qualities.

The plant is native to South Africa, particularly the
desert regions of the Kalahari. The indigenous tribes were
aware of the natural ability of this plant to reduce normal
appetite. This was very useful to these tribesmen, who
would often have to undertake hunting trips that could last
for many days, until they found the game they were after.
They would more often than not set off carrying no food,
and so would chew on the plant to stave off their natural
hunger pangs.

Although this practice of the Kalahari tribespeople was
recorded by a Dutch anthropologist in the 1930s, it is only
recently that the pharmaceutical companies started to take
an intense interest in this appetite-suppressing plant.

They eventually concluded that anyone ingesting the P57
molecule would see a reduction by up to 2000 calories in
the amount of food demanded by the body's natural appetite.
In other words, the body was tricked into feeling full with
a greatly reduced amount of food.

So, as non-scientists, we must accept that the case is
proven. Hoodia Gordonii does indeed suppress the appetite,
and, for most of us, if our appetite is reduced then we are
far less likely to over-eat. And, providing we are sensible
and still eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of liquids
along with the hoodia, and take a little exercise, then we
almost certainly should lose weight.

The trouble is, once word got out about this wonderful and
effective weight loss product, there was a huge demand, and
this led to many unscrupulous parties getting involved in
this booming market. Like some other well known "life
enhancing" pharmaceuticals, the Internet was soon awash
with many websites offering a wide range of hoodia products.

The consumer was rightly confused with the variety of
hoodia products, and rightly surmised that many of the
claims made were fraudulent. In many cases, the product was
based on a hoodia plant, but not on the Hoodia Gordonii,
the only one with the magic active ingredient, so it would
not suppress the appetite.

In other cases, the genuine hoodia powder was adulterated
with several other chemicals, which would reduce its
effectiveness, and possibly lead to undesirable side
effects. Remember that the hoodia plant is 100% natural,
and so does not have any nasty side effects.

The old maxim of "Buyer Beware" applies here as in so many
instances. If you think that you would benefit from the
appetite suppressing qualities of this wonderful plant,
then you must ensure that you purchase only pure hoodia
gordonii from a reputable company with the requisite
certification. If they do not offer proof of certification,
then go elsewhere.

Home Remedies For Pimples - Greatest Pimple Plague Busting Tips

Home Remedies For Pimples - Greatest Pimple Plague Busting Tips
When it comes to spots and acne the right home remedies for
pimples are actually very effective, when an outbreak
attacks you. Are you fed up and down-in-the-dumps because
you can't get rid of those beastly spots that plague you?

Are you losing self-confidence and self-esteem because of
them? Well, at least you are certainly not alone. Ugly acne
spots are the curse of most teenagers and a good few
adults, too.

But you can do a lot by following some simple guidelines
along with the use of readily available home remedies for
pimples.

To eliminate the problem, let's look at what acne pimples
are, what causes them and finally some great remedies and
tips to help heal and eradicate them.

Acne vulgaris makes its presence uncomfortably known to
you, by forming not only pimples, but also blackheads,
superficial sebaceous cysts and if untreated, scars on the
skin. They mostly break out anywhere on the face, temples,
chest or back.

Some of the causes are over-consumption of sugar, fried
foods and excessive starch. This gives rise to what is
known as internal dampness in Chinese medicine, which
eventually erupts as cysts, blackheads and pimples.

Chronic constipation can be a major contributing factor as
the digestive system becomes more clogged up, causing
toxins to be re-absorbed into the bloodstream.

As the skin is an alternative eliminative channel closely
linked to the bowels, any constipation can give rise to the
body using the skin as a secondary excretory outlet for
toxins, hence the outcrop of pimples and spots appearing on
it.

In addition to these, are the raging hormones of teenage
years which add to the clogging of oil glands.

To improve this situation, you will need to eat more
healthily, introducing plenty of fresh fruit and
vegetables, that with their natural fiber content should
propel the digestive system to eliminate more waste through
the bowel. Reduce chomping on junk food - sweets, cakes,
chocolate and other high sugar carbohydrate foods. They
clog up the system and have you noticed, you want to keep
eating them?

Foods rich in zinc or taking a zinc supplement has often
brought about a dramatic improvement. A good indication of
being deficient in zinc, is the presence of white flecks on
your finger nails. It is best to take advice from a
nutrition therapist before taking zinc as too much can
cause a reduction of copper in the body.

I have found that the topical use oatmeal on the affected
skin is very effective. Make a paste from fine oatmeal and
warm water and smooth this onto the skin, leaving for as
long as possible. This not only soothes the angry skin in
the area of acne outbreak, but it also draws out the toxins
via the skin pores, helping to unclog them and allowing
them to 'breathe'. Daily or weekly use of oatmeal paste
can bring about a very noticeable improvement. I consider
this to be one of the best home remedies for pimples.

There are many simple as well as effective treatments you
can use which are both safe and non-toxic, without having
to resort to some of the more invasive chemical
over-the-counter treatments.

Supplements for joint pain

Supplements for joint pain
We all know the importance of mineral and vitamins in our
body. Body joint movements and healthy joint functions are
very important aspects. We all want to take proper care of
them. There are a number of essential vitamins that the
body needs to function properly and it is possible to take
these in the form of a vitamin supplement. The majority of
people do not have a balanced diet and they may be lacking
in certain vitamins which means that they require a vitamin
supplement to ensure that they do not have a deficiency of
an essential vitamin. Certain vitamins are absolutely
essential for the joint health. A health practitioner is
the best person to give advice on any vitamin supplement
that a person should take. It is important to seek
professional advice before taking any vitamin supplement.
This is because there are some vitamins that can be toxic
if too much is consumed and a vitamin supplement may not be
appropriate if there is enough of the vitamin already in
the food a person eats.

Joint pain is a big problem especially in America. The
acceptance of joint support products by consumers has been
increasing due to their proven effectiveness, as well as
their ability to promote and maintain joint health with
little or no side effects. Currently joint pain, disability
and restricted mobility affect more than 40 million
Americans. As the U.S. population ages, it is expected that
this number will double within the next decade. These
symptoms, once considered an unavoidable consequence of
aging, are now being successfully treated by joint support
products. There are various categories of products and
usually they contain glucosamine, MSM etc. which help in
covering the damage. It's also advisable for the joint pain
sufferers to supplement their diet with minerals and
vitamins supplements. Some categories of people may require
more types of vitamin supplement than others. Vegetarians
are often deficient in certain vitamins that are only found
in animal products, for example, and a vitamin supplement
is the ideal solution to this problem. Vegetarians do need
to be aware that some vitamin supplement manufacturing
processes involve animal products and it is important for
them to read the labels. A large number of synthetic
vitamin supplement products are available which will enable
a vegetarian to take them without contravening their
dietary beliefs or needs.

Children may sometimes show symptoms of vitamin
deficiencies. Contrary to the popular belief many younger
people can also suffer form joint pain. They will often
need a vitamin supplement, especially if they show any
symptoms of joint pain. Many young people do not eat a
sufficient variety of foods in their early years and a
vitamin supplement can help compensate for this natural
deficiency. Breast feeding for children has long been
recommended as a source of all the essential nutrients but
women who choose not to or are unable to bottle feed may be
concerned as to whether their baby needs a vitamin
supplement. The large majority of baby milk formulas
contain additional vitamins to prevent the need for a
vitamin supplement to be given. It is important to discuss
any concerns over the need for a baby or child to take a
vitamin supplement with a health professional to ensure
that the correct solution is found.

Vitamins are not only for those suffering from joint pains.
Elderly people or those suffering from certain diseases or
illnesses are other groups of people that may need to take
a vitamin supplement. The body may often need a vitamin
supplement to compensate for a person not being able to
consume the recommended daily allowance of certain vitamins
through their normal diet.

Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is one of the more painful problems
that occurs with the progression of diabetes. Neuropathy
is another term for nerve damage, and in this case, it is
nerve damage resulting from inadequate blood supply to the
nerves. The blood supply becomes restricted by
atherosclerotic plaque formation in the small blood vessels
that supply the nerves, and this is a common result of
increased blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides)
associated with diabetes.

Diabetic neuropathy typically first involves the feet, and
may later involve the hands, creating the "stocking and
glove" pattern of symptoms. As the nerves degenerate from
lack of blood supply (and therefore a lack of vital oxygen
to the nerve tissue), various symptoms of nerve damage
begin to arise. The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy may
include numbness, burning pain, tingling, and stabbing pain.

Because diabetic neuropathy is tied to poor blood flow (and
resulting decreased oxygen) to the nerves, symptoms tend to
be worse at the extremes of activity level. When someone
with diabetic neuropathy is inactive for an extended period
of time, such as when sleeping, overall blood pressure and
circulation decreases, resulting in decreased blood flow
and oxygen supply to the nerves, and increased neuropathy
symptoms. This often results in restless sleep, or a
complete inability to sleep due to pain.

On the other end of the activity range, when someone with
diabetic neuropathy exerts him or herself, overall
circulation is increased, but there is increased uptake of
oxygen by the large muscles. This means that less oxygen
is available in the smaller blood vessels that supply the
nerves in the feet and hands. This is why it is usually
necessary for people with diabetic neuropathy to rest
frequently any time they have to walk or exert themselves.

In addition to pain, the loss of nerve function in the feet
begins to interfere with balance and coordination when
walking. Balance is controlled by nerve signals from the
feet, visual cues from the eyes, and from the vestibular
system in the inner ears. While normal balance can
typically be maintained when one of these 3 systems is
partially diminished in function, major losses in one
system, or partial losses in two or all 3 can dramatically
interfere with balance when standing or walking. Since
diabetes not only causes loss of nerve function in the
feet, but also tends to eventually interfere with vision,
and because older diabetics often have other age-related
losses in the visual and vestibular senses, a major loss of
balance can result. The loss of balance is often one of
the more debilitating aspects of diabetic neuropathy, and
many times causes falls and other accidents that result in
injuries.

Medications are available that can decrease the pain of
diabetic neuropathy, but do little to improve actual nerve
function, nor help with neuropathy-related balance
problems. There are some natural treatments; however, that
do appear to improve nerve function in many cases. Of
course, the first line of defense is simply making the
necessary lifestyle changes to try to reverse diabetes
and/or to prevent it from getting worse, including diet and
exercise. Beyond that, there are nutritional supplements
and other interventions that have shown promising results
in recent studies in actually improving nerve function in
cases of diabetic neuropathy.

Probably the best of these natural treatments is
alpha-lipoic acid. Numerous studies have shown significant
improvements in diabetic neuropathy with both oral and
intravenous supplementation of this nutrient. Alpha-lipoic
acid is a strong anti-oxidant which is beneficial to
cardiovascular health, but also appears to have a direct
effect on healing diabetes-related nerve damage.

Another promising treatment is magnetic therapy,
particularly using magnetic shoe insoles for diabetic
neuropathy in the feet. It should be noted that there is a
large range in magnet strength used in magnetic insoles,
and it appears that the effectiveness of magnet therapy
improves with higher magnet strength (higher gauss rating).
Preliminary studies have shown good results with magnetic
insoles, and it is speculated that magnetic gloves might
produce similar results in neuropathy of the hands.

While it may not be possible to completely eliminate
diabetic neuropathy, there is much that can be done to
improve the situation with natural remedies in the majority
of cases.

Food Toxics and Health Hazards

Food Toxics and Health Hazards
Food toxicology is a health issue. You should worry about
toxic chemicals in your food simply because certain
chemical contaminants have been implicated in major health
hazards, ranging from cancer to birth defects to asthma.

Understandably, high doses of toxic chemicals can be
lethal. But how safe are low doses of these toxic
chemicals? If high does are dangerously deadly, why should
you be exposed to even the low doses?

Nearly all the food you consume may contain a trace of
heavy metals, pesticides, and toxic chemicals. Some of
these contaminants are not added to your food: they are
naturally occurring contaminant substances due to the
environment. However, most of them are added by food
manufacturers to make your food more lasting, more
appealing, and more palatable.

Most food manufacturers give their products a face-lift or
makeover to make them look fresher or of higher quality.
For example, cold cuts, hot dogs, and beef jerky are all
dyed red to make them look fresh and tantalizing. Even
children's candies, popcorns, and cereals are heavily dyed
to make them more fun and enticing to young children.

Studies in rats and animals have shown that certain food
dyes are toxic and carcinogenic. Certain food colors were
banned, and certain food dyes have been approved by the FDA
due to insufficient evidence to prove a cancer risk.

Although artificial food colors may not pose a major health
risk, other than susceptibility to allergies, there is no
regulatory limit on how much a food manufacturer can use in
a food product, that is to say, self-regulatory, which in
some cases mean "no regulation."

It is sometimes difficult to avoid food colorings totally,
given that so many food items in the supermarket are
colored to some degree. However, if you are concerned with
your health, maybe you should pay more attention to food
labels, and select products that use the natural color
agents derived from beets, carrots, and spices, instead of
those chemical food dyes.

In addition to food dyes, food toxics can also derive from
dietary hormones, which are growth-enhancing hormones found
in most meats. Residues of these hormones may affect how
children mature sexually.

There has been much controversy over growth-enhancing
dietary hormones in animals. Canada and some European
countries believe that hormones and their metabolites in
beef can be toxic and mutagenic; however, the United States
insists that the hormones in beef are safe. There you go!

As a wary consumer, simply eat less beef, or buy only
"certified organic" beef. Chicken and pigs are not fed
growth-enhancing hormones. Another alternative is to get
protein from beans and grains.

Of course, farmers apply millions of pounds of pesticides
to the crops you eat. However, the risk from pesticides is
relatively low to make food toxicity a major health
concern. The best way to avoid pesticide toxicity is to buy
organic produce. In addition, peel vegetables, such as
carrots and potatoes, although their skins are most
nutritious; this is a decision you have to make regarding
the trade-off. It should be noted that washing the produce
will not do much to get rid of the pesticides, which are
already in the peels and the vegetables.

But do these food toxics, even in small does, compromise
your food safety? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is
supposed to be responsible for food safety. Given that it
is a complex and difficult job, does the FDA rise to the
occasion? A consumer may be at a loss as to what to eat or
not to eat. The bottom line: Always eat natural and go
organic.

You've just been snubbed . . . What now?

You've just been snubbed . . . What now?
So, you've just been told that you've missed out on leading
that new, exciting project. Or you find that two of your
colleagues are getting a promotion over you. Or the
presentation you made to the board last week didn't seem to
go over as well as you had hoped. All of these events (and
probably one or two you are thinking about as you read
this) can lead us to feel demoralised. The problem then
escalates. The disappointment we feel from this one event
spills over into everything else we do. Not only do we
feel bad, but others around us start to notice our lethargy
and things like our negative talk too. How can we get
ourselves out of the despondent feelings and negative
behaviour brought about by disappointments such as these?

There are two things that will help. Firstly, we need to
understand the three factors that are working when we are
highly motivated. This is important so that we can aim to
get them back into our life when things aren't going so
well. Secondly, a list of helpful tips to get us started
back toward normality.

All the work done by the sports psychs over the last 20
years to help athletes perform at their best, has been
really helpful for us mere mortals as well. For instance
through their research, we now know that when we are
performing well (and highly motivated):

- We are being mentally stimulated, i.e. our mind is being
used in a way that challenges and stimulates us (e.g.
business, pleasure, creative)

- We are emotionally well balanced, i.e. we feel happy
within ourselves and we have satisfying personal
relationships with friends and loved ones

- We are physically fit - eating, sleeping and exercising
well.

So, the tips to get motivated should apply to getting our
mind, emotions and body quickly back into shape. Here they
are . . .

1. How to get your mind fit again:

- List on a sheet of paper the three or four things you do
really well.

- Then, jot down some answers to these questions: 'If
things were going well for me now, what would I be doing?"
"Which of my strengths would I be using?"

- Take each one of your answers and write out an action
plan. Write it as "My goal is to ... The next steps I will
take immediately to move toward my goal are ..."

- Next, some mental practice. Make yourself comfortable,
either sit or lie down. Close your eyes, take a few deep
breaths. Allow your imagination to flow freely. Picture
yourself as you take action to achieve your goals.
Visualise them coming true in every detail. How do you
feel? When you open your eyes write down any thoughts that
come into your head.

- Do the first thing on your list now! Over the longer
term, you might consider having a chat with a supportive
friend, or reading a stimulating book, or even perhaps
taking up a new and creative hobby.

2. How to get your emotions into balance:

- Immediately look for someone else who is doing something
well (business, sport, study etc). Tell them in detail what
a great job they are doing. Praising what others are
doing, not only makes them feel good, it has a reciprocal
effect. You will feel better as well.

- Tell your loved ones that you love them. Build the
bridges, now!

- Share a laugh with someone you know. For example, watch
a favourite comedy movie or video with someone. Laughter
is a fantastic medicine. Recent studies in Japan have
shown that patients who laugh more get better more quickly
than those who don't.

3. How to get physically fit:

- Start some exercise straight away. If you are not into a
lot of exercise, start with a short walk. Remember the old
Chinese saying "A journey of 1,000 miles starts with the
first step".

- Be regular with your chosen exercise. Physical exercise
is not only good for your body, it stimulates the brain.
In fact, it's been shown that we can get the same stimulus
from physical exercise that can be achieved with drugs.
Besides, it's cheaper and better for you.

Getting one's motivation back again is all about building
energy. Next time you find yourself a little demotivated,
keep in mind that you need to re-energise your mind,
emotions and body.

A Sufferer's Experience of Migraine and Belladonna

A Sufferer's Experience of Migraine and Belladonna
My migraine was initially diagnosed when I was 36 years
old. As with many migraine sufferers the debilitating
attacks occurred weekly, affecting my ability to function
and lead a 'normal life'.

To find relief and help, my first port of call was to my
General Practitioner who was most unsympathetic, implying
that three young children, moving house and working were
bound to have a detrimental effect on my health and the
combination of stresses had 'chosen' to manifest in the
form of migraine. When I asked for suggestions for relief,
anti-depressants were offered as the 'best course of
action'. The GP also intimated that in time the migraines
would probably disappear; if not a hysterectomy may be the
answer!

There was no discussion regarding my medical or family
history, side effects that I may experience or the
potential for addiction to the anti-depressants. The whole
visit was over within five minutes, I left the surgery
reluctantly clutching a prescription. Hopefully this was an
atypical experience, and GPs these days are more
sympathetic.

I decided to carry out research into the side effects these
anti-depressant drugs could induce. I was horrified to find
that the symptoms I suffered, headache, nausea, difficulty
concentrating etc. could be further aggravated, and there
were other potential side effects such as sexual
dysfunction, hair loss and abdominal pain. My immediate
instinct was to throw the prescription away; in no way did
I want all those chemicals inside me, potentially doing
untold long term damage to my body. Neither did I want a
hysterectomy, as my migraines did not coincide with monthly
hormonal changes.

After alternative advice from family and friends to change
my diet, cut out all known triggers such as cheese,
chocolate, caffeine, alcohol and have more sleep, I decided
to look into complementary therapies and a friend
recommended me to try homeopathy. The use of homeopaths was
not as widely known as it is today and many people inferred
that their practices were somewhat dubious.

Unperturbed and determined to find someone to help me I
used the local telephone directory to seek out registered
homeopaths, finally arranging an initial consultation with
the one who seemed the most genuinely interested and
concerned with my plight during our introductory telephone
conversation.

When I arrived, the homeopath began explaining in detail
the 'like-for-like' principles of homeopathy. She was not
at all offended or alarmed by my questions about her
training and qualifications, the answers to which were most
reassuring.

My life and medical history were discussed in depth,
including family history of migraine and my sister's
epilepsy and the thoughts I had that my headaches were an
indication of me developing the same, which terrified me.
We also discussed my present and past emotional states and
the holistic approach to finding suitable relief.

During the consultation I explained that my migraine
usually started at the back of the head and spread
predominantly to the right temple, accompanied by a
pounding, throbbing pain and was worsened by light, noise,
jarring and cold hands and feet. From this and careful
questioning about other life and family factors, the
homeopath concluded that Belladonna would be beneficial for
me.

She told me that Belladonna is also known as Deadly
Nightshade. I was somewhat alarmed by this and expressed my
concerns over using such a toxic and sometimes fatal plant.
The homeopath carefully explained that the doses of
Belladonna that I would be taking were very diluted but
confirmed that it should only be used when prescribed by a
qualified practitioner, and should NEVER be used as a
self-help measure, for example picking it from the wild.

As an aside, Belladonna means 'beautiful eyes' in Italian
and preparations of it were used in days gone-by to dilate
the pupils and make women appear more alluring and sexy.

But apart from that, I was interested to learn that the
therapeutic use of Belladonna has been known for over 500
years and it has proven beneficial in many different
homeopathic remedies. It was also reassuring to find out
that many non-prescription cough syrups sold over the
counter contain atropine which is obtained from Belladonna.

My homeopath explained that should Belladonna not be
beneficial there were other homeopathic remedies such as
Sanguinarine, which is used to treat migraines with similar
symptoms but accompanied by vomiting, which rarely happened
in my case. Therefore it was agreed that Belladonna be
prescribed initially.

I was recommended to take the Belladonna in tablet form
twice a day, three in the morning and three at night over
five days and return for further consultation within 7
days. She also advised me to exclude cheese, chocolate,
caffeine and alcohol for the time being, while keeping a
headache diary to enable triggers to be identified and
discussed during future consultations.

I continued visiting the homeopath on a weekly basis for
several months, all the while continuing to take daily
doses of Belladonna which were gradually reduced. The
homeopath always made the visits productive and as she
found out more and more about me, my life-style and
triggers, she noticed that I have a tendency to clench my
jaw and grind my back teeth when subjected to topics of
discussion that were upsetting or made me angry. She
advised me always to sleep with my mouth slightly ajar to
prevent muscle tension. This is something that to this day
I consciously make an effort to do not only when drifting
off to sleep but when I begin to feel tense. The
improvements in the severity, intensity and frequency of my
migraines were astounding and gradually they disappeared.

I strongly recommend that anyone who suffers from migraine
attacks should consult with a homeopath as I'm sure they
will find the experience and their professionalism as
'life-changing' as I have.

To repeat: Belladonna is another name for deadly
night-shade, and should NEVER be self-administered. Use it
ONLY under the supervision of a registered and qualified
practitioner.

8 tips for losing weight the healthy way.

8 tips for losing weight the healthy way.
Around 150 million Americans were overweight or obese in
2008. In the UK at least a third of the population is
either overweight or seriously obese. More and more
children are having their life expectancy reduced because
of obesity. Obesity continues to be a serious problem and
is predicted to reach epidemic levels by the year 2020.

Here are some diseases that you are likely to suffer from
if you are carrying a lot of extra weight:

1. Heart disease- the biggest killer of all.
2. Stroke
3. Diabetes- too much sugar can cause problems.
4. Cancer
5. Arthritis- your joints can't take too much weight.
6. Hypertension

Losing weight helps to prevent and control these diseases.

The quick weight loss methods which have made their
creators millions of dollars do not provide lasting
results. They may help you lose weight in the short term
but in the long term they're of no use. More often than
not, dieting methods which involve dietary drinks, foods
and supplement or pills do not work. They make their
producers lots of money but do not really benefit you. I
will, however, talk about these in other articles.

It is better to rely on a healthy weight loss option which
will provide lifetime results. You have to set realistic
targets and not expect to lose a lot of pounds in a short
time frame.

Here are 8 tips on how you can lose those unwanted pounds
the healthy way:

1. Do not starve your self.

The key to a healthier way of losing weight is: Do not diet.

You may seem happy and feel that you are losing unwanted
weight on your stomach and thighs by skipping meals. But
remember that this will not last long. Your body cannot
cope with having insufficient food to fuel the energy that
you use up everyday.

If you get used to skipping one or two meals a day, your
stored calories will be used up instead of the energy that
should have been provided by your meals. So if you just eat
one huge sandwich in one day, it will end going straight to
your problem area , whether that's your stomach, your hips
or your buttocks.

2. Start your day right.

Dieticians always say that breakfast is the most important
meal of the day. Have a healthy meal in the morning to
jump-start your metabolism. Smoothies, fruit are really
great. See my previous articles on superfoods to see
exactly why.

3. Eat small, healthy meals frequently.

Five small snacks per day is better than three big meals.
Eating more frequently, and in small servings, can prevent
over-eating. This will also increase your metabolism and
make calories burn faster.

4. Decide on how much weight you want to lose.

Keep your target sensible. In the long run, it is
virtually impossible for you to lose 30 pounds in 2 weeks
,that is unless you want to make yourself really ill ! Have
a mindset that you want to eat healthy for the rest of
your life.

Once you have decided on a weight loss plan or program,
stick to it and make sure that you follow your own set of
dieting rules.

5. Drink lots of water.

One of the ultimate superfoods water is an essential for a
healthy diet.Your body needs sufficient water to burn fat
and keep your cells hydrated and healthy.

6. Avoid too much sugar.

Plan your meals around lots of fruits and vegetables, some
bread, rice or pasta for that carbo fix that you need, plus
lean meat and protein rich-foods. Sweets, sodas and
pastries should be an occasional treat only.

7. Watch your fat intake.

Fat is not the culprit to being overweight. You need this
to keep your weight at the proper level.

Some fats are healthy. Olive, peanuts and canola oil have
them, tuna, salmon and mackerel have omega-3 fats. They are
great for the heart.

8. Exercise. One clear message here. Do not overdo it. Do
not waste money on gym membership until you're confident
enough to do so. Take exercise everyday using everyday
situations. Leave your car if you are only going a few
blocks from home, take the stairs instead of the elevator,
jog, cycle or skate. Use these activities and other home
chores if you don't want to go to the gym.. Make sure that
you do this regularly and you will not even notice that you
are already shedding pounds with these day to day
activities.

It does not matter how much weight you plan or need to
lose. What is important is that you set realistic goals for
yourself.

Go slow. If you have already lost 5 or 6 pounds, give
yourself a break then try to lose the next 5 pounds.

Eat healthy, drink lots of water, have enough sleep and
exercise. This will give you a higher chance of losing
weight and improving your health, which would result in a
new, healthier you. Finally do not become obsessed with
weighing yourself. Check the scales once a week- no more.
Become obsessive and losing weight will just become a
chore. Remember you're changing your lifestyle as well as
your weight !

How To Avoid Wasting $$$ Hand Over Fist On Fitness Equipment

How To Avoid Wasting $$$ Hand Over Fist On Fitness Equipment
Find Out Everything You Need To Know About Fitness
Equipment. Do You Need It? Or Are You Better Off Investing
Into A Fitness Trainer?

Fitness equipment in your home will not produce the same
fitness results that a qualified personal trainer can
offer for around the same price as the expensive fitness
equipment, if not cheaper. Since a piece of fitness
equipment is nothing more than an object, it is unable to
compete with the advantages that an actual fitness trainer
can provide. This equipment will not assist you in the
proper techniques for losing weight and getting into better
shape. Additionally, fitness equipment will become useless
once you achieve your desired level of health.

As a resident interested in improving their health, you
need to establish a proper fitness plan. A successful
fitness plan will not revolve around hefty fitness
equipment but on the knowledge that a fitness trainer can
provide to you.

Fitness Equipment Is A Temporary Solution To Better Health

The fitness equipment, regardless of what type of equipment
it is, only has limited use. There is not one piece of
fitness equipment that will assist you in completing all of
your fitness goals.

As mentioned earlier, this equipment is also expensive and
has a tendency to collect dust after you have reached your
fitness goals (or when you have decided to give up on
reaching your fitness goals, as many people who purchase
fitness equipment do).

Equipment For Fitness Will Not Plan Your Entire Workout

Regardless of the price that you pay for your fitness
equipment, it will not plan your entire workout. It will
not tell you everything that you need to do to succeed at
your individual fitness goals.

Only a proper personal trainer can guide you to
successfully completing your fitness goals, even if they
seem impossible to tackle.

Invest Smart By Rethinking Your Fitness Equipment

In reality, there is not much of a difference between the
price of fitness equipment and the price of hiring a
personal trainer. While both options could be considered
expensive, you will receive more from your local fitness
trainer than you will with fitness equipment that you have
to force into your home.

Your Mental Health

Fitness equipment will not help you in maintaining your
mental health. Even though you are trying to achieve a
higher level of physical health, you will only receive the
best results when you are mentally prepared for the
enduring workout sessions that you will face.

A fitness trainer can assist you in keeping your morale up
while the fitness equipment will encourage you to give up
on your fitness goals, if anything.

Improving Your Social Life

By investing in the services of a fitness trainer against
purchasing fitness equipment at your local store, you can
improve your social life. By working out a a fitness
center, you will meet individuals with similar fitness
goals.

These people will want you to succeed in your goals as much
as they wish to succeed in their own.

You will have someone to talk to (in your personal
trainer) when you have questions regarding your fitness
plan. A piece of fitness equipment is unable to carry on a
conversation with you, leaving you with a lonely workout
session.

So, In Conclusion..

Fitness equipment will do you little good unless you are
using the fitness equipment of a fitness trainer that you
have hired. Your fitness trainer, just like any human,
will always be more valuable than a mechanical device.

As I'm sure you've seen numerous people line up at health
clubs or gyms on the treadmills and other machines and
avail to no results.

What is the Best Way to Build Muscle Fast?

What is the Best Way to Build Muscle Fast?
What is the best way to build muscle fast, using
free-weights or machines? If you wanted to gain weight and
build muscle as fast as naturally possible, what should
your workouts look like? Well, if you want to build a mass
of muscle fast and effectively, free-weights are hands down
MUCH more effective then machines in general.

Why? The main reason is because free-weights require
complete strength and coordination of the weight, so your
muscles are forced to work harder. If your muscles are
working harder, then typically this results in more growth.
If the motion of the exercise is supported and guided
through its path, such as with machines, then your muscles
have much less stress when lifting the weight.

When you train with free-weights, your body must adapt to
the range of motion on its own. This is why whenever you
try a new exercise you have never done before it feels
awkward or more difficult, even with light weight. Since
your muscles have to adapt to this range of motion, you
develop a more overall solid level of strength, resulting
in of course bigger strength gains which means bigger
muscles.

This is not to say that machines are altogether useless for
gaining muscle mass. They play their part for some
exercises that you can't use free-weights for such as the
lat-pulldown machine for your back. However, since you are
probably more concerned with the best way to build muscle
mass fast, I'm going to keep it simple like always:

STICK TO FREE-WEIGHTS!

Gaining strength in barbell and dumbbell exercises,
especially compound exercises such as squats, deadlifts,
bench presses, bent-over rows, shoulder presses and a few
others will always build much more solid, hard, muscle mass
then machines, period. A muscle mass building workout MUST
contain mostly free-weights.

If you have been using mostly machines for a while and
havn't seen any results worth bragging about, then perhaps
this is where the fault is. I would personally recommend
that to those who are looking for the best muscle mass
workout program for fast results eliminate machine
exercises completely.

In a nutshell, machines are good for pumping and isolation
exercises, and free-weights are for gaining muscle weight
fast and packing on serious pounds of muscle in record
time. If you are a true hardgainer and have a really hard
time gaining weight and building muscle mass fast, then it
is absolutely vital that you stick with mainly
free-weights, most of the major compound exercises, eat
plenty of clean food emphasizing on protein and carbs, get
plenty of rest, keep your workouts short and simple, and to
be careful not to overtrain.

With these key factors in mind, you should have no trouble
gaining weight and building muscle mass as as fast as
naturally possible.

Readers digest tells two diet fitness approaches can make you sexy

Readers digest tells two diet fitness approaches can make you sexy
It's all about fitness now a days and definitely looking
younger and slim. Many people nowadays are very much
conscious about their own health and fitness. In addition
to that, these people, and many others as well, are now
having that desire to sculpt their bodies to achieve that
magazine-cover look. We have fitness concerns and as a
result, gyms, health spas and other fitness centers have
proliferated all over to cater to the needs of the fitness
buffs and aficionados.

What's up with the fitness machines and other fitness stuff
? Even on television exercise machines, weight loss
products, and other paraphernalia to improve fitness have
more or less gained control over the airwaves and made
their way into the households. We have all those miraculous
products that claim to fight fat and yet we have to see
some encouraging results in ourselves. But exercise is not
the only way to build that body beautiful. It also entails
certain amount of responsibility on the foods one chooses
to eat. Being healthy and fit requires one to observe diet
fitness and watch his calories closely.

Diet fitness is as essential as exercise itself. In fact
some people can loose weight controlling their diets only.
Diet for fitness provides the essential nutrition one needs
to restore worn-out muscles and for healthy growth. Diet
fitness should never be taken for granted. With the
popularity of keeping fit, many different views, methods,
programs and dieting strategies have been formulated by
many professionals. Among these are high carb diets and
high fat diets. We shall try to know know the fundamental
differences between these two diet approaches. As the name
implies, high carb diets concentrates on taking in
carbohydrate-rich foods while high fat diets endorses
fat-rich foods. High carb diets are utilized to glycogen
stored in the liver and muscles. Glycogen is a glucose
complex that provides large amounts of energy ready for use
in anaerobic exercises.

What comes to mind when we talk of high calorie intakes ?
Avoid whatever comes to your mind. Fats are well-known for
being the richest source of calories. It actually contains
2.5 times more calories than carbohydrates and proteins
alike. Studies also show that it takes the body 24 calories
to metabolize carbohydrates while it only takes 3 to burn
down fat. So which one to follow? A person can follow a
high carb and low fat fitness diet or the other way around.
It is absolutely not recommended to follow both at the same
time; unless of course if you want to gain body fat.

So closely watching your calories and matching the daily
intake with one of the diet approaches can be good idea and
estimate how much weight can you expect to lose soon. Diet
fitness is not all about losing fat, one must also consider
his diet in order to keep fat away. Research shows that
sustainable loss of weight can only be achieved on a diet
which suits the individual food preferences, lifestyle,
medical profile and satiety signals.

Diet programs can definitely work. Diet programs all over
can help you shed off excess pounds, but only one diet can
help you stay sexy, and it is the one that satisfies you
most. Other important aspects of having a fit diet are
moderation, balance and variation. One must be careful not
to leave out important nutrients and other substances
necessary for healthy body functioning. health
organizations are clear about the amounts of nutrients an
individual should have in the body.

Don't go crazy with the dieting program! Striving for a
sexy and healthy body does not have to burden an
individual, diet fitness does not have to mean sticking to
the same kind of food for life. One may even try to be
adventurous and try out new foods out there. Who knows? one
may even discover spinach interesting.

What's The Best Wrinkle Cream?

What's The Best Wrinkle Cream?
Wrinkle is the sign of aging. How do we fight wrinkles? The
best way to fight wrinkles is by living a healthy
lifestyle. Without a healthy lifestyle, no matter how many
types of anti wrinkle creams you use, it is useless. A bad
lifestyle will lower the effectiveness of anti wrinkle
cream thus making it doesn't work for you. What is a
healthy lifestyle? Healthy lifestyle means no smoking, no
drinking alcohol but drink a lot of water, sleep enough
hours, eat accordingly to time and exercise. With a healthy
lifestyle and the right anti wrinkle cream the road to a
more youthful and vibrant look is wider. Now we can talk
about the best anti wrinkle cream that is most effective.

There are many types of anti wrinkles cream in the market.
It is never easy to determine the best anti wrinkle cream
in the market as there are simply too many of them. There
are many ways to find out which is the best anti wrinkle
product. One is by having a scientific research on the
products. However, often the results are not so accurate.
There might be many different types of test subjects with
many different features thus affect the results directly.
However, the most trustable way is by letting the users of
the anti wrinkle creams to give feedbacks about what they
think about the products they use. This is because only the
user knows whether the product suitable for her or not.

Another way is by checking the hot selling anti wrinkle
product. The hottest and fast selling anti wrinkle product
indicates that the product is very popular. Why is it
popular? It must be because it works excellently and thus
people are rushing to get it. There are a few products that
are really fast selling. Such products with high popularity
means there is a high demand for the product. Besides,
products which are really effective and useful would have
attracted many people and people who like it would
eventually introduce the product to other friends or
families.

Right now, the hottest product in the market is "Hope in a
Jar". There are many people claim that this product is
really useful and effective in protecting the skin with SPF
and at the same time makes the skin look radiant, tight and
smooth. Another top selling product is "MD Formulations
Vit-A-Plus Night Recovery". It is able to decrease fine
lines, reduce the wrinkles and tighten the skin. It is
definitely a great product with great effectiveness. The
third popular product would be "Cellex-C Eye Contour Cream
Plus." This product has an ingredient known as Lycopene. It
is an antioxidant and we all know that antioxidant can help
to slow down the aging process.

So there you have it, the products that are top selling,
fast selling, popular and top ranking for their
effectiveness in preventing the signs of aging. However, if
you are going to spend so much on the products, you might
as well want to live a healthy life that will ensure that
the products even work better and more effective.
Otherwise, you are just wasting your money and time on
something you are not working to make sure it really works
for you.

Eating Out And Losing Weight

Eating Out And Losing Weight
One of the hardest things in the world to do is eat out at
a restaurant when you are trying to lose weight. Losing
weight is all about burning more calories than you consume
and when you are not the one preparing the meal, you are
often eating higher amounts of calories than you thought
would be in a given serving. In order to stay strict with
those calories, there are a few tricks to eating out and
losing weight.

* Choosing a salad. The salad section of a menu can seem
like the safest place to start. But, salads in a restaurant
setting are not like the salads you prepare at home. These
are often laden with extra calories from the bacon bits to
the cheese, the tortilla strips to the dressing. Two
tablespoons of blur cheese dressing alone contains 150
calories. If a salad is on your mind, choose the side salad
with lemon juice and use this as a starter for the meal.

* Eating from the kids menu. The kids menu offers smaller
versions of the adult menu. But, these choices are often
larger than a traditional portion you would serve yourself
at home. Kids menu options are also most often deep fried
and full of the wrong kinds of fats. Staying away from the
kids menu is a great choice whenever dining out and trying
to lose weight.

* Choosing chicken. Chicken is a safe choice in many
restaurants as long as two simple rules are followed. Do
not choose the battered version and do not eat the entire
serving. A serving of chicken should only be the size of a
deck of cards. This can be added to the garden salad to
make for a light and healthy salad while dining in a
restaurant.

* Flavored tea. Many restaurants are now serving flavored
teas as a part of their menus. These teas can be appealing
and there are just tea, right? Wrong. Many of the mango,
raspberry and strawberry teas are flavored with sugared
syrups and can contain more calories than a can of sugared
soda. Ask how the teas are flavored before ordering.

* Choosing low carb. Unless you are on a low carb diet, the
low carb menu should be avoided at all costs. Losing weight
by counting calories is about just that, counting calories.
Low carb options will contain fewer carbs but more fat and
calories than many other options on the menu.

* Soups. Soups are another no-no in many restaurants. This
is especially true for creamed soups. If soup is a must,
ask for the nutritional data on the soup before ordering.
Then, choose the soup with the lowest calorie count. And,
always remember, you do not have to finish the entire bowl.

Losing weight and eating in a restaurant can be
accomplished easily and without starving for that burger
next to you. If the meal out is a planned one, eating a
snack high in fiber before heading off to the restaurant is
the best choice. The fiber will keep you feeling full and
you will be less likely to order that huge meal sure to
bump you off the weight loss track.

Fat Burner Supplements: The Unadulterated Truth

Fat Burner Supplements: The Unadulterated Truth
Fat burner supplements are advertised everywhere these days
- on the internet, in magazines and even on TV. The ads
almost always feature a very lean fitness model or
bodybuilder and claim that these products, usually pills,
are the secret to their six pack abs and very low body fat
levels. Some of these ads suggest that the only way to get
as lean as the "hot bodies" you see pictured is by taking
their "miracle pills" and that proper nutrition and
exercise alone is not enough.

While I won't dismiss the fact that there are ingredients
in some fat "burner" products that might help a little bit,
I take great displeasure in seeing misleading advertising
claims as well as the misleading use of models who are
often paid to endorse the product even though they may
never have even used it (they're just models!)

Many "fat burner" companies have been sued by the Federal
Trade Commission for false advertising, false claims and
falsifying before and after photos.

The best you get is a slight thermogenic effect and
possibly some slight appetite suppression. A few products
might work through other mechanisms like improving thyroid,
but if you forgive me the generalization, I consider the
effects of all these "fat burner" products to be minutia.

In one of my previous newsletters, I said that in my
opinion, 97% of your results come from nutrition and
training and maybe you get an extra 3% advantage from
supplements. Just so you know those numbers aren't
something I pulled out of thin air, here's an example:

I have reviewed scientific data that EGCG, the active
ingredient in green tea extract, if consumed in enough
quantity, could increase thermogenesis / metabolic rate by
an average of about 75 calories in 24 hours. Since
ephedrine was taken off the market, green tea extract
appears in many ephedra-free formulas these days. What is a
typical calorie expenditure for an active male in 24 hours?
lets say 2700 calories per day. 75/2700 = 2.7%.

That little extra doesnt hurt, especially when it's
delivered in a healthful package such as green tea (rather
than central nervous system stimulants), but it's minutia
in the bigger picture. Another way to put this into
perspective is to make a list of what other things would
burn 75 calories (for 150 lb person:)

* walk your dog for 15 minutes * walk for 5 minutes at
normal casual pace three times a day * 30 minutes of
ironing * bagging leaves and grass clippings for 14 minutes
* re arrange your furniture for 10 minutes * wash your car,
15 minutes * vacuuming for 15 minutes *7.2 minutes of
walking up stairs (could be spread throughout the day)

Of course, some people are probably wondering, "Why exert
yourself if you could take a pill and your metabolism
increases while you sit and watch TV?"

Here's what any good personal trainer will always tell you:
No amount of calorie restriction or pill-popping will ever
give you FITNESS. It will never give you STRENGTH. It will
never get you MUSCULARITY. It will never give you
FUNCTIONALITY. At best it will help you reduce your body
mass.

And how about for your health? A body that's not moved rots
away. Unlike a car which only has so many miles on it and
wears out from over-use, people are the only "machines" on
earth that fall apart from under-use.

On one hand, I'm tempted to say that everything counts and
that yes, 75 calories here and 75 calories there, it ALL
adds up, because it does. After you're exercising regularly
and all your fundamentals are in place, details and little
things do matter.

I'm simply asking you to put the benefits of any fat
burners in proper perspective and realize that (1) there is
no "need" for taking them and (2) the claims made in the
ads are often erroneous or exaggerated.

My advice on fat burners:

1. NEVER buy a fat burner unless you get independent
verification of the claims made for the product.

How do you know they really work? Are you seriously going
to take the advertisers word for it? Are you going to take
someone else's testimonial as fact? Get verification for
yourself by going to the pub med data base and looking for
the primary research.

2. Put it in perspective

With those products that work, such as those providing a
small thermogenic effect, put that in perspective as
compared to how easily you could burn that many calories
with even light exercise like walking or housework. Keep in
mind the additional fitness and strength benefits you will
obtain from exercise as opposed to doing nothing and
popping a pill.

3. See if there are any side effects or health warnings.

With all supplements and especially with prohormones or
stronger thermogenics like the ephedrine and caffeine
stack, (if you still have access to them), understand the
risk to benefit ratio, and be certain you know the dangers
and contraindications.

4. Read the label and see if the product contains enough
active ingredient to even work.

A classic scam is when a "fat burner" advertisement quotes
research that a certain inredient boosts metabolism, which
might be true. What they may not tell you is that all the
research with positive results used a large dosage of the
ingredient, which might not be cheap. So the supplement
company includes a "pinch" or "light dusting" of that
ingredient just so they can say it's in the bottle, even
though it's nothing more than "label decoration." Then they
have the audacity to invoke the research studies in their
advertisements when the amount of the ingredient in their
product is no where near what was used in the research!

5. Beware of the proprietary blend scam.

Some companies don't let you see how much ingredient is in
the product formula, because it contains multiple
ingredients and they say their formula is a "trade secret"
aka "proprietary", so they list what is in the product but
not how much. Well, if you don't know how much is in there
then how are you supposed to know whether it contains the
proper dosage? (answer: you don't!)

6. Make sure there is human research, not just rodent
research.

In many cases, advertisements cite studies on rats and mice
as "proof" under the assumption that the product will
produce the same results in humans. Animal research is an
important part of the scientific method, as it is often
used to help find areas of research where human study
should be pursued, or in the other direction, to trace back
the mechanism that makes something work. However, for
obesity research in particular, a positive finding in rats
does not mean the same thing will happen in humans.

7. Look for more than one human study.

Consider trying a supplement after it has human research
that has been replicated by different research groups which
are not industry-sponsored. My policy is that I will
usually only give a "buy" rating to a supplement when a
product has an initial well-designed human controlled trial
published and then similar research has been replicated by
another research group that is not supplement-industry
funded. Actually, I think it's a good thing that nutrition
and supplement companies fund and sponsor some of the
research. They should. They should not only back up their
claims with published clinical trials, they should share
some of the cost of this expensive research.

However, a basic principle of the scientific method is
replication. Other researchers should be able to duplicate
the findings. Therefore, while the funding source does not
necessarily prove bias, if there is only one study
available on a supplement and it is company or industry
sponsored, I usually take it with a grain of salt and put
an asterisk next to it while I wait for confirmation from
another study. (You might be surprised at how infrequently
this type of confirmation occurs).

Do you really need "more" than nutrition and exercise?

Now, when you weigh the fact that even the products with
research backing them only help a little, with the fact
that many of the ads lie to you about research, exaggerate
claims and hide vital information about ingredients, and
with the fact that you can do a few more minutes of
exercise per day and get the same results for free, how
enthusiastic are you about fat burners? Yeah, that's why
I'm not real excited about them either and based on the
fact that I use no drugs and no "fat burner" supplements
and I compete in bodybuilding - very successfully - I'd say
that the assertion, "it takes more than nutrition and
exercise to get six pack abs" is patently false.

Demographics Reveal The Truth About Traumatic Brain Injury

Demographics Reveal The Truth About Traumatic Brain Injury
They may seem like mere numbers, but statistics and
demographics information can give important information on
who is affected by traumatic brain injury (TBI) - and
possibly shed light on how to prevent brain damage. This
article takes a closer look at who is impacted by TBI in an
attempt to show the true costs of brain damage to victims,
their families, and society at large.

Traumatic Brain Injury: Who Is Affected?

Though studies vary slightly, it is generally accepted that
at least 1.4 million people sustain a traumatic brain
injury each year in the United States. However, this figure
only reflects the number of patients who seek treatment at
the emergency department of a hospital or other medical
facility; the number who do not seek care is unknown. This
"mystery factor" in TBI demographics is of concern since
many of the effects of traumatic brain injury can take
months or even years to develop and manifest.

Gender

Men have been found to be as much as twice as likely as
women to sustain a traumatic brain injury. However likely
they are to be affected by brain damage, men have also been
found to have better outcomes from TBI treatment. Medical
professionals are unsure of the cause for worse brain
damage outcomes in female victims; however, it may have to
do with sex hormones or differences in brain structure.

Age

The population of brain-injured patients is generally
acknowledged to skew towards the young side; in fact,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), the two age groups most likely to suffer a brain
injury are aged zero to four and 15 to 19. This is due to a
high incidence of falls in the former group and motor
vehicle accidents in the latter. Elderly individuals above
75 years of age are also more likely to suffer from
traumatic brain injury due to slip and fall injuries
connected to the aging process and medications.

What Are The Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury?

There are many causes for traumatic brain injury, but motor
vehicle accidents are the leading cause of TBI in victims
across all age ranges and genders. Firearms and falls
follow, but the causes of brain injury change depending on
the age group in question. For example, the elderly are
almost as likely to sustain TBI after a fall than a motor
vehicle accident, while children often sustain TBI from
blows to the head in abusive situations. Attempted suicide
is an often-overlooked cause of TBI. Alcohol plays a
notable role in traumatic brain injury, with figures
ranging from 32 to 73 percent of all TBI incidents
involving some degree of alcohol abuse. Other causes of TBI
include boating, swimming, and occupational accidents.

What Are The Costs of Traumatic Brain Injury?

The most expensive and dramatic effect of TBI is death: out
of 1.4 million traumatic brain injury cases per year, at
least 50,000 patients die of their injuries. But there are
other costs and complications of TBI, one of which is
lifetime disability (80,000 of the 1.4 million cases will
result in long-term disability). Though it is possible to
survive a traumatic brain injury, the onset of disability
has other consequences, which include personality changes
and resultant family instability, financial insecurity due
to the inability to work or hold down a job, and resulting
lost productivity and reduced participation in activities
of daily living.

Though perhaps nothing can put a dollar value on an
individual's loss of independence and daily life skills,
there are distinct monetary losses associated with TBI.
These include lost wages, inability to work, and social
costs such as lost taxes and required state assistance.
Some statistics estimate that traumatic brain injury costs
the United States over $60 billion per year in combined
costs.

If You've Been Affected by Traumatic Brain Injury

If you or a loved one has experienced the cost of traumatic
brain injury, contact an experienced TBI attorney. Your
traumatic brain injury lawyer can help you file a lawsuit
and obtain the compensation you deserve for lost wages,
medical costs, rehabilitation and future medical care.

How much protein should you eat every day?

How much protein should you eat every day?
Everyone knows that protein is an essential part of your
daily diet, and meeting a minimum protein level throughout
the day is vital for having the energy you need as the day
rolls on. Some people, however, are unaware of the fact
that there is also such thing as having too much protein in
your diet, because your body doesn't know what to do with
excess protein and this can cause more harm than good.
Having excess protein in your diet can cause just as many
harmful effects for your health as not getting enough
protein can. If you are increasing your protein intake but
your calorie intake or exercise habit is not increasing
along with it, you can actually put your body through more
stress than it needs or than it can handle for that matter.

Your body requires protein on a daily basis in order to
repair and build your muscles along with other vital body
tissues. Protein allows your body to create the hormones
that it needs for optimum health, and to make the enzymes
that are needed for metabolic and digestive processes. If
you do not consume enough protein on a daily basis, your
body may turn to your muscle instead, breaking it down to
find the energy it needs.

Proteins are comprised of amino acids, which are
essentially building blocks, and there are somewhere around
twenty different amino acids, some of which are actually
created by your body. There are nine different amino acids,
however, that cannot be synthesized by the body, and these
are known as essential amino acids. The only way to get
these essential amino acids is by eating whole foods that
contain them. It is vital that you eat a variety of
different protein foods every single day so that your body
can get all of the essential amino acids that it needs.

There are a number of excellent whole food sources of
protein that offer all nine of the essential amino acids,
including meat, turkey, fish, eggs, chicken, cheese, milk,
soy and yogurt. You can also find some, but not all, of the
nine essential amino acids in plant food sources such as
beans and peas and other legumes, nuts, peanut butter and
some seeds. If you are a vegetarian, then it is vital that
you find the right balance of whole food plant sources
including vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts and grains in
order to get all of the essential amino acids that you need.

The amount of protein that you need is dependent upon your
age, the size of your body, and how active you tend to be,
or how much energy you burn throughout an average day. Most
teenagers, for example, need between 40 and 50 grams of
protein per day. The best way to get an estimate of how
much protein you need is to take your weight and multiply
it by about 0.40, and you will have the number of grams of
protein that you need for a day. So if you weigh 150lbs for
example, and you multiply that by 0.40, you will need 60
grams of protein every day for optimum health. This is just
an estimate however, and there are a number of
characteristics that will impact this number, such as
whether or not you are an athlete or play sports.

Many of the whole food sources of protein are excellent at
delivering the protein that you need. For example, fish,
beef, chicken and shrimp can provide as many as 21 grams of
protein per 3 oz serving. A single cup of yogurt can
provide 11 grams of protein, and cooked lentils and tofu
can provide 9 grams of protein with only a half cup of
food. Other excellent sources for protein include bulgur,
kashi, oats, millet, cooked egg, hummus, soy milk, cooked
beans, cheese and cow's milk. There are a number of
different protein supplements that come in the form of
bars, powders and shakes. Usually though, most people get
their much needed protein, rendering these supplements
unnecessary in most cases. But if you need to put more
protein into your diet, make sure your protein supplement
contains several forms of protein (not just whey protein)
AND the protein includes an enzyme additive for protein
digestion. This will ensure your body can digest the
protein and you acheive maximum benefits from taking the
supplement.

How To Really Attain Fast Weight Loss

How To Really Attain Fast Weight Loss
Within our society, problems have arisen that need to be
dealt with. Of these many problems, obesity has to be one
of the most troubling and most common. A second problem
that relates to obesity is impatience on the part of most
people. I know that it may not seem obvious, but these two
problems are interconnected. With our hectic and often
times fast lifestyles, we expect most things to happen for
us quickly. Unfortunately, we also expect the same thing
when it comes to losing weight. With that being said, it
does not mean that fast weight loss is not an option. All
this means is that an instant fix is not possible, with an
emphasis on instant.

One of the main issues with fast weight loss is that
individuals expect to see results in only a one to two
days. This is because of advertisements that make claims
that you can actually begin to tell the differences within
that short of a period of time. It is true that you may be
able to lose six or seven pounds in a short time period but
it may not appear so on your body. What needs to be done
is to stay positive when you do decide to undergo one of
these fast weight loss regimens. If you take the program
or regimen seriously, you will begin to see results.

One of the best fast weight loss programs that you can
possibly do is to go on a low glycemic diet. The glycemic
index is simply an indicator of how quickly a sugar will be
released into your system from a carbohydrate. The quicker
a sugar is released, the more of an impact insulin will
have on your body. By eating carbohydrates that have a low
glycemic index, the sugar will be slowly released into your
body. This will enable your insulin to use it up more
efficiently, just how nature intended. As a result, no
sugar will be stored as fat in your body because it will
have been all used up.

Of course, you cannot simply sustain yourself on
carbohydrates. You also need to make sure that you are
eating a protein with every meal, such as chicken, pork or
beef. With the incorporation of protein, you also need to
eat some legumes such as lentils and black beans. These
will help your body keep going throughout the day. Eating
this way at every meal will help you to lose weight as a
surprisingly fast pace. This is the easiest fast weight
loss method that works quickly and can be utilized for the
rest of your life for permanent results.

The Detox Foot Spa and Far Infrared Waist Belts?

The Detox Foot Spa and Far Infrared Waist Belts?
With the Foot Bath becoming such a major staple in many
houses as a way to create a more healthy body it only makes
sense that research will continue to find ways to improve
upon the process. One of the improvements that has come
about is called the Far Infrared Bamboo Charcoal Waist
Belt. This belt increases the effects of the
detoxification by adding to the internal warming of the
major organs. This allows the foot bath itself to work
more quickly as well as more completely by allowing for
more direct warming of these key areas.

The belt is able to affect the body at its natural cellular
level. Besides the obvious benefits of being able to more
effectively target key areas the belt is able to accelerate
the metabolism and blood circulation within the body.
These benefits allow the system to pinpoint specific
ailments more specifically.

The belt has the ability to directly work towards dealing
with a certain group of ailments. One of the major
ailments that can be targeted is joint stiffness. It is
able to specifically deal with certain joints by allowing
the detoxification to be focused on a specific area of the
body. The ability to cleanse an area suffering from
discomfort allows the body to more effectively heal.

By using this same basic tenant the belt is able to deal
with muscle spasms as well. By removing the toxins that
commonly gather in an area that is having an issue the body
is better able to deal with those issues. Without the
outside influences the body itself is generally very good
at dealing with minor injuries efficiently.

In addition to the basic value of getting rid of the
toxins, the side effect of a lessened toxin level is that
the body will gain a better blow flow. This blood flow
makes it easier for the body to deal with inflammation and
soft tissue damage. An increase blood flow will lessen the
pain related to injuries as well as speeding up the
recovery time associated with these types of ailments.

While the foot bath itself is useful with all of the above
situations it isn't able to specifically pinpoint certain
areas. This ability is what really sets the belt apart
from the system alone. Being able to combine this belts
ability to defined specific areas of need with the overall
healing ability of the original foot bath is a huge
advantage.

When it comes right down to it the healing abilities
inherent in the foot Bath are simply magnified with the use
of the belt to pinpoint specific injuries. The belt should
not be used as a replacement for the Foot Bath itself, but
instead as a sidekick that has more specialized abilities.
By using both of these products anyone is able to gain the
full benefits of hundreds of years of fine tuning to make
this system the best it can possibly be.

Relieve your Signs of Menopause with Exercise

Relieve your Signs of Menopause with Exercise
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death among American
women. It causes more than ten times the number of deaths
than breast cancer does.

Menopause symptoms are often confused with heart disease
and menopause symptoms are generally widely known. Whether
there's a link or not between menopause symptoms and heart
disease is being researched but without any conclusive
evidence to date.

Menopause information abounds on the benefits of relief of
menopause symptoms. Typically, with all the controversy
over hormone replacement therapy, many women today are
turning to natural hormone replacement therapy for relief
of menopause symptoms.

Early menopause symptoms can generally be offset by an
exercise regimen, which experts report can be as easy as
walking for 20 minutes daily. Early menopause symptoms can
further be treated with light stretching exercises with 20
minutes of walking.

It is very important to have a lifestyle that includes
plenty of active exercise, 20-60 minutes per session, 3-5
times per week. This aerobic activity helps the heart work
at its best by allowing it to pump more oxygen-rich blood
with each beat, resulting in a slower resting heart rate.

Relieving your menopause symptoms with exercise starts by
making sure you are in overall good health. Conditions
such as high blood pressure or heart disease should be
treated and under control before starting.

Menopause symptoms such as hot flashes can be exacerbated
by strenuous exercise so staying cool and drinking plenty
of fluids is important during the exercise session. Night
sweats may require more strenuous exercise to assure a good
night's sleep. One of the other signs of menopause is
osteoporosis, which is significantly helped by exercise due
to the strengthening of bone mass that occurs.

It's not certain yet whether physical inactivity or the
naturally occurring change in hormones during perimenopause
and menopause cause the loss in muscle mass and increase in
fat. Perhaps it is a combination of the two.

It is known, however, that these changes happen in
menopause-aged women. Fat metabolism becomes lower as
estrogen levels decrease, thus, body weight goes up.
Lipids, or fats, in the blood increase during menopause,
and that determines the cholesterol count.

Eating a diet rich in fiber, both soluble and insoluble, is
beneficial in lowering cholesterol. That type of diet
helps the body move extra cholesterol out of the system by
binding it with bile.

Additionally, there is some evidence that some menopause
symptoms, such as insomnia, depression and hot flashes, can
be alleviated by exercise.

Signs of menopause can be offset by a regular exercise
regimen; be sure to include plenty of fluids and light
dress during the session. Natural hormone replacement
therapy is an excellent complement to a regular exercise
regimen to offset menopause symptoms.

Why do some people always ROCK at Work Outs ?

Why do some people always ROCK at Work Outs ?
Hmm, it seems like there are some techniques for better
health and for better fitness workouts. Let us analyze some
fields in which you can perform a workout as if you are a
Rockstar performing at the concert.

Sports with full sprint

Sport that requires a full sprint can be tricky, remember
that a full sprint strains the muscles of the lower body.
To combat this, do stop-and-go exercises. For example, run
30 meters at about 80 percent of your effort, slow to a jog
for five to 10 meters, then run again for another 30
meters. Repeat this process five times.

Avoiding ACL injury

So you want to avoid an ACL injury and still come out
great. Land and turn with caution. Almost 3 out of four ACL
injury occurs when players are landing or turning. If your
knees are bent instead of straight, the risk of injury is
greatly reduced according to a report in the JAAOS (Journal
of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons). That is
pretty obvious though as you will feel lower jerking impact.

Damn the headstrokes!

Many experienced workout professional have undergone those
painful moments. Heatstroke is not something that can be
easily cured like headache. To avoid it, stay cool and
hydrated. Be sure the combined temp an humidity is less
than 160. This is according to Dr. Dave Janda of the IPSM.

Tools of the trade.

So you thought fitness is all about your own body. Fitness
equipments are as important. Badly fitting gears or ill
sized equipment can be a cause of training injuries. The
extra money spent on proper equipment goes a long way.

Amateur vs. professionals

Bad technique is just as bad as, well, bad equipment. Seek
advice from pros and trainer, the advice they give for your
workouts are invaluable to your exercises or training.

Wandering in different directions

If you're playing or training in multiple directions, your
warm up should also. Move sideways, backward, forward and
all the motions you might be doing. This allows your body
to be prepared.

Make a movie with you being the hero

The camera doesn't lie. Get crazy and get those movements
of yours captured and thoroughly investigate them. Show
your video to a person well versed in fitness training, so
he can give a critic of your fitness regimen.

Be comfortable at shoulders

I have seen many bodybuilders stray from bodybuilding
activities once their shoulder gets injured. Man ! Is it
horrible ? Even a slightly injured rotator cuff can shut
down the function of a shoulder. You might want to include
stretching to protect your rotator cuffs. Stretching
anyways, is important.

Swimming like a lone duck!

Come on, it's not just about showing your skills to others
but you want to get the most advantage out of those watery
moments. Schedule your swimming sessions early. The less
people in the pool means less of everything in the pool.

Protect yourself

Protection is important. Wearing custom-fitted mouth guards
reduces the risk of injuries by as much as 82 percent,
according to a study at UNC at Chapel Hill. Plunk out the
cash for a custom-fitted mouth guard and it'll last for
years including your smile and teeth.

Getting your tendons to smoothen

Inquire about ultrasound needle therapy. These procedure is
minimally by using ultrasound to guide a needle. The needle
smoothens the bone, breaks up calcifications, and fixes
scar tissue. Thirteen out of twenty patients saw
improvement, and the session takes only about 15 minutes of
your time.

A trick to buy the best shoes!

Buy your running shoes after work. Shop in the evening, the
feet are swollen after a day of work. It approximates how
your feet will be after three miles of running.

Road running is for the roadrunner and bugs bunny!

Train your body to run on slightly unstable surfaces. If
the surface is unstable, it trains the ankles to be stable.
But don't go crazy here!

Know the path to fitness!

Whether its biking, or skiing, be sure to have a dry run
down any path first. A lot of injuries can be avoided when
you're familiar with the route taken.

The hardness factor!

I am not talking about he instrument in your pants but
about working out HARDER. It is going to be a long term
beneficial process. Anxiety reduces your peripheral vision
by three degrees and slows the reaction time by almost 120
milliseconds, according to an article of the Journal of
Sports Sciences. When the going gets difficult, the veteran
athlete rely on skills they've trained for and practiced.
It keeps them cooler under pressure, widening their vision
so they can see reaction much faster.

Now go and become a workout stud!

Summer Weight Loss - 5 Important Tips

Summer Weight Loss - 5 Important Tips
Summer Weight Loss - 5 Important Tips You Must Follow

With summer weight loss on everyone's mind and summer being
a few weeks away its time to drop a few pounds or more so
you can fit into your favorite suit! It is actually easier
to lose weight in the summer because there are so many
activities you naturally lose weight without even trying.
So here are 5 tips to kick your summer weight loss program
into high gear!

5 Summer Weight Loss Tips:

1. Stock Up On Healthy Snacks - You tend to eat more in the
summer because it is hot and generally people go out to eat
more often. Make sure you load up on nutrient-dense snacks
such as fruits and veggies, trail mix or dry cereal, whole
wheat crackers and energy bars. Bring these with you when
you participate in outside activities.

2. Don't Let The Heat Stop You - This takes the number one
spot for our rapid weight loss ideas! Many people become
lazy and don't take their summer weight loss seriously
because it's hot. Limit the computer and TV time and save
it for the winter! Try learning a new sport or taking up a
new outside activity. Horseback riding, golfing, outside
belly dancing. Remember that "thing" you've always wanted
to do or learn? Go do it!

3. WATER WATER WATER! Hydration is imperative to staying
healthy during the summer and most people don't realize how
much fluid they are losing when being active. Many people
when designing a summer weight loss program neglect to
include extra water consumption as part of their diet. Its
easily overlooked but probably one of the most important
during the summer. Hydrate before during and after your
activities. Water is almost always better for you than
sports drinks.

4. Its Ok To Take A Nap - There has been studies that
prove taking a nap can lower risk of heart disease and
lower stress. A more prominent study was done in Greece and
showed 3 naps a week reduced heart disease by a third!!! So
pull out that hammock and make nap taking a part of your
summer weight loss repertoire!

5. Exercise In The Morning - Its easier to wake up early in
the summer so use that to your advantage. In the beginning
if you are just starting a program wake up just as the sun
is coming up and go for a walk. The air is much cooler and
it will get your day started on the right foot. When it was
winter it was a good excuse to sleep in under the covers
but now that its summer get up with the sun and go walk for
15 minutes. After 3 or 4 walks I GUARANTEE you will notice
a difference.

Bonus Tip: Although rigorous or moderate activity will help
you lose weight there is NOTHING that will kick your summer
weight loss program into high gear better than a good diet.
You can actually slim down with the proper diet and NO
exercise if you learn how to eat correctly. So as always we
suggest you do these activities and 5 rapid weight loss
tips in conjunction with a proper diet.
