Sit or stand with your spine straight and stretched
slightly. Then slowly take a breath at a slow count of 3
and exhale just as slowly. Allow your lungs to expand as
you take in the air and empty it as you breathe out. If it
helps to close your eyes, then do so. Fresh oxygen helps
enliven your blood and the slow breathing encourages you to
sit or stand still for a moment.

2. Stretch.

Another way you can relax is by slow stretching. Whether
you're standing or seated, make sure to keep your spine
straight and allow your arms to dangle loosely at your
side. Feet should be flat on the floor and relaxed.

Slowly raise your arms high, as if you're reaching for the
ceiling and slowly raise yourself on the ball of your feet.
Follow your hands with your eyes so your head can tilt
back. Hold this position for a count of 10 and then slowly
bring down your arms.

3. Increase your physical activities.

Or at least start one if you haven't got any exercise
regimen. Contrary to what other people think, exercising
actually helps you relax afterwards. It cleanses your body
of toxins by inducing sweat, increases your blood flow and
the flow of oxygen to the brain and it works up your
muscles.

Start slowly and gradually build up until you are able to
maintain a regular schedule.

4. Watch your diet.

What you eat affects your mood. Another great way to relax
is to maintain a diet that is rich in nutrients, such as
antioxidants, folate and omega-3 fatty acids. Eat more
fruits and vegetables and when you're thirsty, grab a
bottle of water and keep away from sodas and flavored
drinks.

5. Get enough sound sleep.

Sleep is about quality and not just quantity but in times
of stress, it's best to get as much sleep as you can.
About 6 to 8 hours should get you the rest you need.

Getting enough sleep is an excellent way to relax. It
allows your body to regroup and recover and it eases your
mind of other concerns.

6. Use music.

If music works for you, use it. Stick to soft tunes and

to use heavy bass lines, hard percussions and strong
lyrics. If you're tired and want to relax, turn to easy

7. Turn away from the modern trappings of your life.

TV, unplug it and keep the remote out of easy reach. Turn
off the computer as well.

sometimes overload the mind. Keep things simple and don't

8. Have time to yourself.

A good way to relax is to set aside time for some peace and

vacations for yourself? You don't have to pack your bags or

quiet place to sit and enjoy your own company.

Yoga and meditation helps you attain a good body and mind

A good acrylic shell like one from Lucite or Quarite both
top quality North American manufacturers who have been
around for a long while would be a good idea.

A layer of ABS with proper hand laid glassfibre to provide
added strength and rigidity to the shell is to be
recomended. Some times a cheaper way of production is to
use a fiberglass backing or a high-density polyurethane
foam or sometimes a combination of the two but in my view
that is an outdated mode of construction and less green for
the planet than the system using ABS. The layer of ABS is
much stronger and a better and more modern way to build. I
have heard it say that some makers claim that they use the
foam to keep the noise in the pumps down well all I can
think is that it is a badly designed Tub in the first place
if it makes so much noise that it needs sound proofing.

Cabinet - This was traditionally made of real wood, but
now more and more are made of weather resistant plastic.

In order to burn fat or lose weight, you need to consume
lower calories than you use or vice versa. The best formula
to achieve this is to combined both techniques and create a
harmonious program. This means, we need to exercise to help
raise the body metabolism and to burn body fat and also we
need to consume less calories to create a negative balance
so that the body can tap into the body fat resources.

To lose one pound of body fat, you need to burn 3500
calories. Lets say your target is to lose 1 pound per week,
that means we need to have a negative calorie balance of
3500 calories per week. That works out to be 500 calories
per day. So, by right, if we manage to workout and burn 300
calories per day and consume 200 calories per day, I would
have lose 1 pound per week and 5 pounds in 5 weeks right?
Unfortunately, that is not the case. Its stubborn body fat
we are talking about here. You are in plateau stage and now
your body is getting used to your exercise routine and your
metabolism is slowing down.

This is the stage where you need to kick in some advance
training strategies for your weight training and
cardiovascular workout. I am assuming that you have already
been doing weight training and doing cardio training
regularly. If you are not, then just by doing probably will
help you shed off that 5 pounds. These techniques are for
those that have been weight training, doing cardio and
dieting but not seeing any more results after their initial
surge of body fat loss.

Our strategy here is to shock your body with new training
techniques and principles. The first step is to reduce your
rest time between sets. If you have been resting for more
than one minute in your workouts, then reduce your rest
periods between sets to less than one minute. Next, do high
intensity drop sets. Yes, drop sets or strip sets will help
shock your muscles into growth and it burns more calories.
A drop set is where by you start an exercise for example
bench press at a very heavy weight. You would only do 8
reps and then you reduce the weight and straight away rep
out 10 reps and then reduce the weight again and do 12
repetitions. You will feel a massive burn in your chest.

The goal here is to shock your muscles so that it will
respond. Also, by doing three sets non stop and
withstanding the burning sensation, it can get your heart
rate up real fast which is good for body fat loss. Use
about 2-drop sets exercise in your daily workout sessions.

The next tip here to burn stubborn body fat is to get your
intensity really high in your cardiovascular workouts. I am
talking about 85 to 90 percent max heart rate. Note that
you have to be exercising regularly and clear of any
medical issues to use this technique. For about a month,
try doing really high intensity cardio training, interval
style. Instead of long 30 to 45 minutes running, now you
are going to try to do 20 minutes explosive runs.

Here is the method:

We are going to separate the 20 minutes into 4 intervals
making each interval 5 minutes. In one 5-minute interval,
there will be 2 phases. The first phase is the base phase
and the next phase is the breaking the threshold phase. For
example, if you can run at speed 10 km/h continuously for
20 minutes, then make 10 km/h your base phase. Then, I need
you to test a what speed you can run that will make you
flat out in 3 minutes. You might need to test this. I
assume 13.5 km/h. So, we are now going to beat that
threshold of 13.5 km/h. Then one interval is made up of 2
minutes of 10 km/h and 3 minutes of 13.5 km/h. I can
guarantee you that you will be knocked out of your socks by
the time the fourth round is over. You can literally feel
your body burning even 30 minutes after the workout. The
post workout burn is just tremendous.

There you go, two powerful methods to bring to war with
your stubborn fat. I am sure that with these 2 tips you can
lose those 5 pounds of body fat and look fabulous in your
clothes. Another important tip is that you have to take
action and be persistent. Never give up!

Although there are many other factors involved, maintaining
a good balance of vitamins and nutrient minerals is crucial
for good health.

In recent months the news has contained scare stories about
excesses of vitamins and minerals. Much of it is
scare-mongering and misinterpretation of scientific
research.

Critics of "higher than RDA" doses of vitamins claim that
because the body excretes certain vitamins, we may have
"over-dosed" in some way. This is as unreasonable as saying
that excreting urine means that we have over-dosed on
water. You will drink water; it will perform many vital
functions, and then leave your body as urine. This does not
mean you have taken an "excess" of water. Likewise, when
certain vitamins are excreted, it's because they have
fulfilled a vital function and are no longer required.

For instance the B-vitamins stain urine a bright yellow
when they are excreted. Take "too much" vitamin C, to what
is known as "bowel tolerance", and the body will "protest"
with diarrhea. This sign of vitamins being excreted does
not necessarily mean they were taken to excess.

But there are legitimate concerns about excess nutrients
too. The body will manufacture many vitamins, and we have
seen from a couple of examples above that it has the
capacity to excrete what is no longer needed. Turning from
vitamins to minerals, although these are essential in the
right amounts, did you know that excess mineral intake can
negate the beneficial intake of vitamins?

It is a question of maintaining the correct balance.
Although the body can excrete surplus amounts of certain
vitamins, it cannot get rid of many possible mineral
excesses. Nor can it produce vital trace minerals in the
first place, which is why many people take a
multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. A practice I am strongly
in favour of.

However, as well as deficiencies of vitamin and mineral
causing health problems, many symptoms of ill-health are
associated with vitamin and mineral excesses. For example:

* Too much zinc can reduce the effectiveness of vitamin D

* Too much calcium can reduce the effectiveness of vitamin
A and magnesium

* Too much copper has been associated with headaches

* Too much iron has been associated with hypertension,
arthritis and headache

Zinc, calcium, copper and iron were specifically chosen for
the "problems" above, because all four are generally
considered beneficial and essential for good health. And
indeed they are - so long as they are in balance with the
other minerals in the body.

Mineral imbalances can arise from poor diet, stress,
pollution and - it has to be admitted - from taking an
inappropriate mix or quantity of supplements. Too many
people simply assume that it is "good" or even "harmless"
to take huge quantities of supplements. While I approve of
supplementation, it is not the case that more is
necessarily better.

You need to ensure your mineral balance is correct, which
is not easy; so you would be well-advised to see advice.
But from whom?

If you consult a conventional medical practitioner you may
find them unsympathetic to the idea of supplements at all.
If you consult a complementary therapist, many simply
recommend a whole cocktail of supplements, with the best of
intentions, but if it is prepared "from their head" it may
be ineffective, or even have ill-effects such as the ones
mentioned above.

A safer approach is to use an objective tool and base your
supplement program on the results of a scientifically

phrase that we all know and have heard so many times

Do not purchase cheap inferior made junk - it's a simple

Habilitation Therapy: The Answer to Caregivers' Frustrations
Doesn't habilitation therapy sound like something new and
innovative? It isn't. However, once you learn about it
and implement it, then caregivng, as you know it, will be a
thing of the past.

Before I explain habilitation therapy, let me give credit
where it's due. I knew nothing about habilitation therapy.
I was an activities worker who "developed" a method of
communicating with my residents through trial and error.
What I did worked for me. Recently, I learned that even
though I practiced habilitation with my residents, I was
only applying a method that an incredible lady pioneered
three decades ago. I give total credit to Joanne Koenig
Coste, who cared for her husband for three years after he
suffered a stroke and developed vascular dementia. She was
the first, and thanks to her, she will not be the last.

Okay, you ask, what is habilitation therapy, and how can it
help me? In a nutshell, habilitation therapy is the
practice of focusing on the skills a person with
Alzheimer's or other related dementias has at the moment,
and not the skills that have been lost. Habilitation is
different from rehabilitation because rehabilitation is
therapy that helps people with physical disabilities to
function again. Habilitation, however, enables people to
maximize what remains and emphasizes their emotions. Only
emotions can survive the ravages of Alzheimer's Disease.

According to Koenig Coste, "The person with Alzheimer's
disease -- like anyone with memory loss -- may soon forget
what you say, but he will never forget how you made him
feel."

Habilitation therapy can be successful if the caregiver:

Makes the home environment work

Realizes that communication continues to be possible

Focuses on remaining skills

Lives in their loved one's world

Keeps their lives productive by ensuring social and at-home
activities

Undesirable behaviors are often blamed on a lot of things,
and some caregivers have told me that they wonder if their
loved one "acts out" on purpose. The simple truth is that
Alzheimer's alters perception. Something as seemingly
insignificant as a shadow can be terrifying to someone with
Alzheimer's. Because their perception is altered, a shadow
is often perceived as a stranger in the house. In that
instance, the way to avoid shadows would be to make sure
the surroundings are brightly lit. Avoiding floor lamps is
a way to reduce shadows and avoid possible falls.

Communication is more than words. You've heard that
actions speak louder than words; so do facial expressions,
posture and tone of voice. What you project through your
tone of voice and your posture comes through loud and clear
to a person with impaired memory. It is entirely possible
that it is you who sets the tone for the day. If your
attitude is positive and your loved one is still agitated
then listening to the emotions behind the words is often
more important than what they are saying. If they keep
asking, "Where am I?", they don't want to know where they
are, they want to know that they are safe. Reassure by
letting them know that they are safe with you, and that you
will take care of them.

No matter how much ability they lose, there is going to be
something they can still do. Maybe your mom can't wash the
clothes anymore, but put some unfolded towels or some
mis-matched socks next to her and she will instinctively
begin folding and matching. You've given her value, and
she knows she still has a purpose. Best of all, you don't
have to remind her that she can no longer do the laundry.
What about dad? What did he do? He might not be able to
work on cars, but he can sort nuts and bolts. The point is
to focus on what they can do without reminding then of what
they can't do.

I know that all these things are important, but living in
their world is the most important to me. When someone who
has lost the ability to reason, it is pointless to try and
reason with them. They can't be in your reality; you must
meet them in theirs. It's the only way to preserve their
dignity. Don't tell them their mom is dead when they ask
for her; that's not her reality anymore. You can say,
"She's not with us right now; she will be gone for a couple
of hours." You have validated her concern and left her
dignity intact.

Activity is important. People with Alzheimer's and other
dementias need to feel needed. They need to feel
successful and have failure of any kind eliminated. They
need to feel that they are still a part of society in a way
that is safe for them. Music is an activity and so is
reminiscing. A tea party with one or two familiar friends
is a wonderful way for them to socialize.

There is a lot more to habilitation, but these are the
basics -- the foundation on which every other aspect of
habilitation is built. Consider this Basic Habilitation

There are literally thousands of chemicals known as "food
additives" that are intentionally added to our foods and
some of these have been linked to cancer and other
diseases. So the question is, what is the relationship
between food additives and health and harmful potential
consequences?

In 1958 the government passed the Delaney Clause Food
Additives Amendment which prohibited companies from adding
known harmful chemicals to our food. But in spite of this,
there are still dangerous chemicals that are still being
added to our food and it is important to understand which
chemicals these are and what the potential dangers are.

The only defense we have as consumers is that all packaged
food is required to list all the ingredients on the label.
It is for us to educate ourselves on the dangerous food
additives and scrutinize the labels of the food we buy. The
challenge however, is that food companies tend to make
finding these suspicious ingredients somewhat tedious,
hiding them in hard-to-find areas of the package and making
the print extremely small so as to discourage their
discovery.

The names of these chemicals themselves can complicate
matters. They tend to be extraordinary long and
hard-to-remember and most people just ignore them rather
than investigating them further. Food companies are also
notorious for masking their products with health-related
rhetoric that leads people into believing that the product
is free of "bad stuff". For instance, "Natural Flavors" or
"No Preservatives" are commonly found on packaged food
products, but does this mean that the product is free of
harmful food additives? Absolutely not. Again, you must
check all the ingredients to determine whether a product is
completely free of food additives.

Here is a helpful tip that relies on basic common sense. If
you are reading the ingredient list and you find it is long
and loaded with long words that you are unfamiliar with,
guess what? This product almost assuredly has plenty of
chemical food additives.

Here is a list of twelve food additives that you should
definitely try and avoid. This is not an exhaustive list,
however, these food additives have been linked to health
concerns and harmful side effects.

Sodium Nitrate or Sodium Nitrite

Found primarily in lunch meat and hotdogs, this is a
preservative and color and flavor enhancer and has been
linked to cancer.

BHA and BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydrozyttoluene are
used as a preservative. You can find them in things like
chips, cereals and even chewing gum. They have been linked
to cell oxidation which in turn is linked to cancer.

Propyl Gallate

Also a preservative. There has been evidence that this can
be linked to cancer.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

MSG is one of the more well-known food additives and is
primarily used as a flavor-enhancer. Much of the restaurant
food we consume is flavored with MSG. This food additive
can cause reactions in some people such as headaches and
nausea.

Trans Fats

Trans-fats are proven to cause heart disease. Restaurant
food, especially fast food chains, often serves foods laden
with trans-fats.

Aspartame

Aspartame is a sweetener and is also known as NutraSweet.
The brand of sweetener called Equal is also aspartame.
This food additive has been linked to cancer and
neurological problems.

Acesulfame-K

A new sweetener used in baked goods and candy, Acesulfame-K
has had limited testing and there has been some evidence
that it may cause cancer in lab rats.

Food Colorings: Blue 1, 2; Red 3; Green 3; Yellow 6

Food colorings are basically just a form of paint. They can
liven up the walls in your living room but should
definitely be avoided in food. Blue 1 and 2, found in
beverages, candy, baked goods and pet food, have been
linked to cancer in lab animals. Red 3, has been shown to
cause thyroid tumors in rats. Green 3 has been linked to
bladder cancer. Yellow 6 has been linked to tumors of the
adrenal gland and kidney.

Olestra

Olestra is a chemical fat that is used in chips and can
have a wide array of side effects. Additionally, Olestra
can impede the absorption of vitamins from fruits and
veggies.

Potassium Bromate

This food additive is found in many breads and products
that use flour. It has been linked to cancer in animals.

White Sugar

White sugar is white because of bleach. Eating foods that
add a lot of white sugar is very bad for you.

Sodium Chloride

AKA... salt. Most of the commercial foods we eat are loaded
with Sodium Chloride. This additive has been proven to
cause heart disease.

Exercise is a key factor for anybody who wants to lose
weight. Exercise will substantially decrease the time for
you to reach your weight loss goals. However it doesn't
just stop there, exercising will enhance your life in many
positive ways. A lot of people have a dread about
exercising because it can be difficult at the start,
especially if you are not used to it. The key point to
remember is that it is only by doing the difficult things
in life, do we reap the greater rewards.

Weight loss is just one positive side effect you receive
from exercising, exercise will also:

Give you more energy. Make you fitter and stronger.
Increase your ability for utilizing more oxygen. Make you
more confident and increase your self esteem. Release
endorphins in your brain which makes you feel happier.
Increase your lifespan Allow you to be a role model for
people around you. Strengthen your heart. Decrease the
risks of major illnesses. Strengthen your immune system.
Boost your metabolism so it works more efficiently. Improve
your posture. Make you look and feel more attractive.
Improve your self image. Improve your ability to cope with
stress. Help you to look and feel younger. Compensate for
the natural muscle loss that occurs with age.

With all these additional benefits it would seem crazy to
avoid exercise, but so many people do, and do not realise
the major benefits that they are missing out on. Of course
exercise will be hard in the beginning and this will be
true for most people. What makes it hard is that your
muscles need to get used to being used in ways that they
are not accustomed to. This is what causes the aches and
soreness the day after an exercise session. At first glance
this may seem a bad thing but in reality it is a good thing
because you are waking up muscles that may have been asleep
for a long time.

Of course your muscles are going to complain when you first
start using them, this is because they are being taken out
of their comfort zone. The good news is that your muscles
learn to adapt pretty quickly to the stress that exercise
will place on them. They do this by becoming stronger and
by increasing their endurance capabilities. When you first
start out, just do enough exercise so that you are pushing
yourself just a little beyond what you think are your
limits. For the first few days you might feel a little
sore, but if you continue doing the same amount of
exercise, the soreness will stop after a week or so. It
stops because your muscles have adapted and when this
happens it is time to do a bit more exercise. Your muscles
will keep on adapting by becoming fitter and stronger, and
you just keep repeating the process.

The hardest part of exercising is the first few weeks. The
reason it's hard is because you are trying to introduce new
behaviours into your life, and your body is not a big fan
of change. Your body likes smooth sailing and doesn't take
kindly to change. The good news is that if you do something
often enough your body will not have any choice but to
change. Always remember that in the beginning; never overdo
it because doing more than you can cope with is going to
result in you giving up. Just do enough so that it is going
to test you a little. After a few weeks things will become
easier, and then you can increase in slightly larger steps
because your body will have come to terms with what you are
doing.

Never ever compare yourself with others when it comes to
exercise. You will be exercising in way that is going to be
challenging for you, it doesn't matter what anyone else can
do. Regardless of how much exercise you start with, always
keep in mind that if you continue, the improvements will
come, it cannot be any other way. Another thing to remember
is that whatever you are doing today is more than what you
were doing a few weeks ago, so you are already improving.

One final tip is that you should try not to think of
exercise. If you spend too much time thinking about it, it
will start to play on your mind during the day. It will get
to the point where you may start dreading exercising when
you finish work, and you would have talked yourself out of
doing it when the time comes. Try to avoid thinking about
it and just do it when the time comes. Most people spend
more time thinking about exercise than spending time
actually doing any, which really makes no sense at all.

There are countless methods of exercise, spend some time
figuring out what you are going to do. Read the benefits on

complications at some point in their life. This can often
lead to hospitalization. The best treatment for such
conditions is prevention! The following is a list of
important steps in the prevention of diabetic foot problems.

1. Wear comfortable shoes preferably fitted by a foot care
specialist. Shoes should have more depth in the toe box and
a firmer outer sole. Higher heels should be avoided as they
place too much load on the ball of the foot.

2. NEVER walk barefoot or in stocking feet! Diabetic
individuals often will lose sensation in their feet. As a
result, if such an individual would step on a foreign
object such as a splinter, they often have limited ability
to feel it. This will allow the injury to go unnoticed
permitting the possibility of infection to occur. These
infections can lead to more serious complications and often
hospitalization.

3. Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly, especially between
the toes, it is best to use pressure rather than vigorous
rubbing when drying. Excessive dirt and debris especially
between the toes can lead to underlying bacterial and
fungal infections. If you cannot reach your toes, a soft
shower brush can be used for washing.

4. Apply a gently moisturizer to the feet once or twice
daily. Diabetic individuals are prone to dry skin. These
subtle scales and cracks in the skin can server as an
opening for bacteria invasion and lead to skin infections.
A gentle moisturizer to the feet will keep the skin soft
and supple. It is important to avoid applying the
moisturizer between the toes. Excessive moisture between
toes can lead to fungal infections.

5. Thick brittle toenails are often a sign of fungal
infection and should be treated by a physician. Having
toenails trimmed by a trained professional is often a
covered benefit with Medicare and most insurance companies
for people with diabetes and associated conditions.

6. Corns and calluses can be treated at home with the
gentle use of a pumice stone to the affected areas after
bathing. Avoid the use of sharp objects or blades.
Accidental cuts can serve as a source of bacterial
infection and more serious foot complications. Avoid the
use of commercial "corn and callous" removers. These are
often mild acids and can lead to open wounds if not used
properly.

7. Socks should be loosely binding and be comprised of
cotton blend material. Cotton serves to absorb moisture
while other materials such as acrylic will "wick" out
moisture. White socks enable on to visualize if there is
drainage or active bleeding from the feet and therefore are
preferred over colored socks.

8. Inspect your feet daily. Look or open cuts or wounds. If
you have difficulty seeing the bottom of your feet, hold a
mirror underneath the sole for inspection.

9. Avoid extreme temperatures------do not soak feet in hot
water or walk barefooted on hot surfaces. Diabetic
individuals will often have decreased sensation to
temperature changes and scalding injuries can go undetected.

10. Should you develop a wound cleanse the area and apply
topical antibiotic ointment with sterile gauze of band aid.
Consult your family physician or podiatrist immediately if
any signs of redness, swelling, or increased pain.

People with diabetes are at increased risk for skin
breakdown, foot ulceration and infection. A minor cut or
blister can have serious consequences. By taking these
necessary precautions, one can avoid injury and reduce the
risk of serious foot problems.

is a measure of protection against these UVB rays. But
ultraviolet A (UVA) rays penetrate deeper, altering cell
structure, darkening skin, and weakening its immune system.

Sunscreens commonly promote the SPF factor. The higher the
number, the greater the protection against burning UVB
rays. And the high for UVB protection has just been raised
to 50+, which is good news. But it's also important to get
protection from damaging UVA rays. Now sunscreens will
also carry a one- to four-star rating system for UVA
protection.

But sunscreen is only as good as its last application.
Studies have shown that people apply sunscreen with a
dangerously sparing touch. The rule of thumb is an ounce
for the average adult. Work it in well before going out
into the sun and reapply every couple of hours — or
more often if you get wet or sweat.

I tell my clients sunscreen is not like plaster. It won't
just stay on your skin.

It won't last forever in storage either — sunscreen
can expire. Many sunscreens have a chemical base. Those
chemicals break down over time. So you may want to
reconsider the bottle that's been rolling around in your
trunk for a few years.

Even used properly, repeatedly and in a timely fashion,
sunscreen isn't an all-day pass to Sun City, and it can't
protect against all of the sun's harmful rays.

For the most complete sun protection, put on more clothes
— and not just any clothes. If your cover-up is an
over washed T-shirt or a wisp of gauze, don't assume it
will protect you; a cotton shirt rates only SPF4. Instead,
invest in some sun-protective clothing — look for the
ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating — and a
UPF laundry rinse to boost protection for other clothes. A
broad-brimmed hat will trump a baseball hat or golf visor,
and UVA/UVB-rated sunglasses will protect your eyes.

Finally, take a time-out. Because ultraviolet rays are
strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., even on overcast days,
schedule outdoor activities for other times of the day.
Seek shade. And if you can't avoid the sun, try to limit
the amount of time you're outdoors during peak hours.

Protect your skin, and your health, by playing it safe in
the sun.
