Are You A Grape Or A Raisin? (DEHYDRATION)

Are You A Grape Or A Raisin? (DEHYDRATION)
Are you a grape or a raisin? If you're drinking at least 1
litre of water for every 25kg then CONGRATULATIONS you're a
GRAPE! No need to keep reading, unless you want to reaffirm
what a great thing you're doing for your body. If you're
not drinking enough water then keep reading, you're a
RAISIN!

We all know that water is vital to health! So much so that
without it we could not survive, yet many people do not
take drinking water as seriously as they should. If you're
not drinking enough water here are a few side effects you
may be already experiencing or may experience in the near
future:

Effects of dehydration:

Weight gain
Headaches
Tiredness
Constipation
Sore back
Muscle cramping
Dry skin
Poor muscle tone
Kidney stones
Water retention
Heartburn
Stomach aches
Depression
Irritation
Nausea

Ready to start drinking more water?

Here are some tips to get you started.

1) At the start of each day fill a couple of bottles of
your required amount for the day. This will prevent you
from guessing at the end of the day if you've had enough

2)If you don't enjoy the taste of water, try adding a
couple of lemon slices

3)Set yourself timers to remind yourself. It's so easy to
get caught up in a project for several hours and then
realise you haven't had a sip in hours

4)Try drinking herbal teas. There are several out there,
so even if you've tried a couple and didn't like then, keep
trying. A few of my favourites are chamomile, peppermint,
ginger, fennel, and dandelion.

5)Keep bottles in your bag, car, office, where ever you
spend time

Once you find what strategies work best for you, the next
step is to not become frustrated by the amount of times you
find yourself running to the bathroom. This will slow down
after a few days. What's happening is your body is actually
ridding itself of excess water. Over the period of time
that you haven't been drinking enough water your body has
gone in to 'survival mode,' it simply wasn't sure if or
when you were going to give it more water, therefore it
held on to the little water it had. You may have seen the
visible signs through being bloated or puffy around your
ankles, hips and thighs.

Remember water is vital to survival, treat your water
intake with the same seriousness that you would if you were
ill and were prescribed medication.

Go on have a drink of water!

Is there a Magic Bullet when it Comes to Your Health?

Is there a Magic Bullet when it Comes to Your Health?
Exercise is the closest thing we have to a magic bullet
when it comes to personal health and well being. First of
all, any amount of exercise above what you are already
doing is most likely going to be better for you (unless you
are already an elite level athlete and in peak physical
condition). Also, exercising is totally free; you don't
need to spend one red cent to get all the health promoting
benefits of exercise. So if we all know it's good for us,
and its free, why don't more people do it?

I think the problem lies with our distorted view of value
and money. In a society driven by money that measures worth
based price, how could something totally free be of any
value? So it must not make sense to many people that
something completely free could be of such incredible value
and worth. Most people can tell you what a house is "worth"
or what a car is "worth". But ask them to tell you how much
a few hours per week of exercising is "worth" and you'll
most likely get a blank stare. How can you put a dollar
figure to the benefits of a lifetime of exercising and
living a healthy lifestyle? The answer is, you can't! There
is no amount of money that can buy you back your health
once you let it go! But this concept must truly be lost
considering the amount of people that are succumbing to
lifestyle disorders like diabetes, heart disease and
obesity. All of which can be reduced or flat out removed by
living a healthy lifestyle and exercising.

Instead of putting a little effort into regular workouts
most people would rather take a drug to deal with lifestyle
disease problems. I believe this happens for three reasons.

1) Because this makes more sense to them, it is a simple
value for a dollar equation. After all, prescriptions come
from the best that medical science can offer. And obviously
the more expensive the drug or treatment is, the better it
must be, again value for the dollar. You work hard for your
money, and you are trained to believe that money should be
able to buy you everything else you need in your life,
including your health. And this couldn't be further from
the truth. Isn't it ironic that the pharmaceutical industry
spends billions of dollars researching and marketing drugs
that do the same thing as a few (free) workouts per week
can do!

2) People are just too busy to "fit in" a few workouts per
week. People who have not grown up with the habit of
exercising simply do not factor it into their daily
routine. As little as three 30 minute workouts per week
would do wonders for anyone who doesn't exercise at all.
But even this little amount of time spent (1.5 hours per
week) seems to be too much.

3) Effort. Even though exercising is completely free and
can provide more health benefits than all the drugs in the
world, most people don't want to put in the effort. I
believe people feel they work hard enough at their jobs,
school, raising a family and whatever else they are
involved in. Ask a person to spend some of their precious
free time working out and it must seem like the work never
ends.

So the answer is there, we all know what to do, but most
people won't own up and do what it takes. Not having enough
time is simply an excuse. Even the busiest person on earth
can find 1.5 hours per week of spare time to throw in a few
short workouts. But for some reason, even though everyone
knows exercising is good for them, they still avoid it.

And this is the most troubling point of it all. Exercising
is free, and has more health benefits than any amount of
drugs could ever have. Regular exercise can reduce blood
cholesterol, reduce blood lipids, improve cardiovascular
functioning and fitness, lower your blood pressure, improve
your insulin sensitivity, help improve symptoms of type 2
diabetes, reduce body weight, reduce body fat, improve the
overall look of your body, increase bone density, build
strong muscles, improve your self image and self
confidence, helps to alleviate depression, adds structure
to your day, provides a gratifying experience that builds
confidence and character, and teaches you the concept of
delayed gratification and a bit of self sacrifice for long
term gain. Now could you imagine a drug that could do all
of that!

FDA Bans Drugs Containing Ephedra Due to Health Risks

FDA Bans Drugs Containing Ephedra Due to Health Risks
Ephedra is a naturally occurring substance derived from the
Asian supplement Ma Huang and is also known as Ephedrine,
Pseudoephedrine, and Epitonin. Its principal active
ingredient is Ephedrine, a drug that is regulated by the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and found in
over-the-counter asthma medications.

While products containing natural Ephedrine alkaloids have
long been used to treat certain respiratory symptoms in
traditional Chinese medicine, in recent years Ephedra has
been extensively promoted as a stimulant that aids in
weight loss, enhanced athletic performance and an increase
in energy levels. Ephedra is now a household name and is
primarily found in various over the counter diet pills.

Originally, the FDA could not regulate the production and
distribution of Ephedra because it is a dietary supplement
protected under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education
Act of 1994 (DSHE). According to the FDA, under this Act,
the manufacturer of the dietary supplement is responsible
for ensuring that it is safe before it is marketed to the
public.

The FDA is responsible for taking action against any unsafe
dietary supplement product after it reaches the market. As
such, most manufacturers are not required to register their
products with the FDA, nor must they get FDA approval,
before producing or selling dietary supplements.

The burden of proof lies on the shoulders of the
manufacturers, and they are required to make sure that
product label information is truthful and not misleading.

Despite the limitations the DSHE Act imposed upon the FDA
to act as an agent of change, the FDA issued numerous
warnings beginning in the early 1990's detailing the health
risks to consumers of products containing Ephedra.

Since the FDA was not able to regulate ephedra effectively
until after millions of Americans had already consumed the
stimulant, many consumers are unaware that suppliers of
products containing the drug were able to make health and
weight loss claims about these substances without a
scientific basis. These suppliers also neglected to
disclose the harmful and potentially deadly side effects of
the products.

In 1994, the FDA began receiving many reports regarding the
side effects of products containing Ephedra. While
Ephedra-containing products account for less than one
percent of all dietary supplement sales, the drug accounts
for an alarming 64 percent of adverse events associated
with dietary supplements.

Between 1994 - 2002, the FDA received more than 800 reports
of adverse effects from Ephedra and Ephedrine alkaloids.
These included but are not limited to:

* High blood pressure.

* Heart rate irregularities.

* Insomnia, nervousness.

* Tremors.

* Seizures.

* Heart attacks.

* Strokes.

* Brain hemorrhages.

* Death.

Ephedra's effects are similar to that of adrenaline and it
affects the central nervous system. Ephedra acts as a
stimulant and it can cause rapid or irregular heartbeats,
chest pain, psychosis and tremors.

Ephedra dilates the bronchial muscles, contracts nasal
mucosa, raises blood pressure, and is a cardiac stimulant.
Complications from these adverse effects can result in
strokes or heart irregularities that can cause cardiac
arrest or death. New medical research has suggested that
ephedra can also cause primary pulmonary hypertension, a
disabling and fatal condition of the lung.

Reports of these adverse side effects have increased in
recent years and include the deaths of a few high profile
athletes.

Ephedra is a dangerous and potentially life threatening
drug. As such it has become critical to monitor its
production, distribution and use. Perhaps this is why, in
2003 the states of California, Illinois and New York
individually took action and banned the use of ephedra
products. This in turn encouraged the Federal Government to
move more quickly towards a blanket ban on the stimulant.
In December 2003, the Department of Health and Human
Services (DHHS) and the FDA announced the intention to ban
Ephedra.

The DHHS stated that Ephedra can be linked to numerous
health dangers and the FDA then urged consumers to
immediately stop consuming products containing the drug.
The FDA also strongly encouraged manufacturers to recall
products still on the shelves.

Effective April 12, 2004, the FDA banned the sale of all
Ephedrine over the counter dietary supplements, having
concluded,"the totality of the available data showed little
evidence of Ephedra's effectiveness except for modest,
short-term weight loss without any clear health benefit,
while confirming that the substance raises blood pressure
and otherwise stresses the circulatory system. These
effects are linked to significant adverse health outcomes,
including heart attack and stroke."

It is now against the law to purchae or sell all dietary
products containing Ephedra. The FDA notified 62 companies
that market products containing Ephedra of the ban. Prior
to the FDA ban one of the most popular supplements
containing Ephedra was Metabolife356, which was
manufactured by Metabolife International, Inc.
