Smudging and Smudge Sticks for Health and Aromatherapy

Smudging and Smudge Sticks for Health and Aromatherapy
Many of us have used smudge sticks for years and felt it's
many benefits. Smudging is such a common, continuous
practice that it almost seems modern. Yet smudging is a
practice so ancient that we don't know just when or how it
came to be. Perhaps quite by chance or by internal
inspiration people have come to realize that the smoke from
burning particular herbs had emotional, cognitive, and even
physical benefits. Modern science has proven that the smoke
from some herbs have cleansing effects changing the
molecular structure of air and energy. In fact the aroma of
sage has been found to actually increase the oxygen supply
to the brain and also produce a physical relaxation of
muscle tension.

We have come to experience that smudging has a purification
benefit for our bodies, our living space and our
consciousness. Some of us have come to believe that the
smoke from burning some herbs acts like a messenger to
realities and energies beyond our conscious comprehension
and understanding. People from China, India, Asia, Europe
and, of course, Native Americans have used smoke from
herbal mixtures in their healing and spiritual rituals.

Many of us have come to realize the benefits of a soothing
bath or shower to cleanse and refresh our bodies as well as
experiencing the emotional feeling of well being from the
cleaning. We have found that the use of water changes the
structure of our physical and emotional energy pattern.
Like water, the use of smudge sticks, a blend of certain
herbs, for smudging is equally effective. Like the Native
cultures around the world, we have found that the burning
of herbs for spiritual, psychic, and emotional purification
helps us relax and feel the balance of our physical and
emotional energy. The rational for how smudging works, is
that the smoke molecules from the herbals blends being
burned, attaches to the negative energy and clears it away
or actually changes the molecular structure of the energy.

Our sense of smell connects us to a deep instinctual part
of our brain. We have all experienced this with the use of
other forms of aromatherapy. Smudging is very effective
aromatherapy form and very useful when we have been feeling
depressed, angry, fearful, frustrated, resentful, grief or
unwell. We have also found it to be useful when we have
experienced irritation and conflict in our relationships.
In fact, a space, e.g. a room, can also be "cleansed" of
this uncomfortable energy. In addition, we can use smudging
to enhance a celebration, special occasion, or ceremony.
Smudging can help us experience a relaxed, open,
meditative, and calm state .

Sage is the herb we most commonly use for smudging. The
botanical name for sage is salvia which is from the Latin
root savare meaning to heal. Smudge sticks usually made of
white or another variety of sage or a are a blend of sage
and another herb. Lavender is well known in aromatherapy
practice, as a calming, soothing, balancing aroma.
Lavender when combined with sage in a smudge stick provides
wonderful benefit and experience. Cedar is a traditional
cleansing herb used by Native people. The "spirit" or
energy of cedar is considered to be very ancient and
powerful. Cedar can also be bundled with sage to create a
wonderful smudge stick. Sweetgrass is a toll wild grass
with a musty, sweet aroma. Sweetgrass is often woven into
braids similar to braiding hair and used for smudging as a
single herb. Sweetgrass has a wonderful essential oil
quality that contributes to it's burning slowly. Sweetgrass
has beome rare in the wild because of development.
Sweetgrass aroma promotes a very meditative, open conscious
awareness. Sweetgrass is often used after the cleansing
benefits of sage or cedar. However, blending and bundling
sweetgrass with sage in a single smudge stick, provides an
awesome aromatherapy and meditative experience.

There are various traditions and patterns of using smudge
sticks. One powerful method when using a smudge stick is
after lighting and adding the energy of breath to "fire"
the embers, is to move the stick from foot to head on the
left side of the body representing "female" aspect of
receiving, then on the right side of the body representing
the "male" aspect of taking action, than bringing the stick
around the body clockwise representing bringing one's self
into the "circle of life", and finishing with touching the
stick to the floor/ground acknowledging Grandmother Earth
and raising it above the head moving the stick in a
circular manor acknowledging Grandfather Sky/Sun. When
cleansing a space or an object, the smudge stick can be
moved in a counterclockwise circle representing unwinding
or undoing i.e. cleansing and releasing. Whatever tradition
or pattern of ceremony or method of use of smudge sticks
with which you are comfortable is quite acceptable and
beneficial.

When using smudge sticks, be sure to practice the
commonsense considerations that you would whenever using
something that involves fire and burning. Extinguishing
the smudge stick with water will ruin the stick for further
use. It is best to extinguish the smudge stick by
"smothering" the embers in a cup, bowl, jar, or other
nonflammable container.

3 Steps to Becoming Rested Through Treating Fatigue Naturally

3 Steps to Becoming Rested Through Treating Fatigue Naturally
There are 3 basic steps in learning how to completely rid
fatigue and live a pain free, rested life again. Do you
want more energy? Do you want to be able to get a good
night's sleep? Fatigue is a problem for a lot of sufferers
but there are steps you can take to lead a more restful and
pain free life. There is an answer to this horrible
condition and it takes 3 simple steps to get rid of it.

Completely getting rid of your chronic fatigue symptoms
involves 3 steps. It's the balance of these steps that can
allow you to take back your life from this horrible
condition. Let's take a look at the first. Diet and
detoxification is the first thing you can do to help your
body recover and put in place the environment of healing.
Finding the right nutrition for your body is going to help
your body heal itself. Nutrition can help rid toxins and
provide each cell with the right stuff to move towards a
new healthier you.

Then your body can focus on providing you energy instead of
expending it on trying to rid itself of the toxins that may
have built up over the years. Many people find that
altering their lifestyle in the area of diet is difficult
because it requires hard work. However, you, as a fatigue
sufferer, know that you would much rather get your life
back fatigue free than worry about a few fries you may
miss. This step is critical in allowing your body to heal
and expend energy in the right places. Your sleep and
energy will improve.

Rejuvenation is another step that is important in the
comprehensive healing program of your body. There are many
areas in this category that can help. Vitamins and
supplements play a part as well as and including:exercise,
breathing and relaxation techniques and other beneficial
tools your body needs to beat the fatigue.

Basically, when your body has a condition such as Chronic
Fatigue, a lot of stress has been added to it. The
rejuvenation phase helps your body to recover from this and
allow it the chance to heal and prepare itself to take on
new life, fatigue free!

Exercise plays a role in the rejuvenation phase and the
next phase, called maintenance. Exercise can do great
things, even for fatigue sufferers. Simple exercise such as
yoga, swimming, walking, and other low impact exercises are
very beneficial to fatigue sufferers. Always consult a
physician or medical expert before engaging in an exercise
program. You can also consult your physical therapist as to
which exercises are best for your particular needs.

Also in the maintenance phase, continuing your diet or
maintaining your healthy lifestyle is key to keeping your
symptoms gone and living pain free. These steps are simple
and you can do it and live symptom free. Despite your
fatigue condition right now, there is an answer and these
simple steps can help lead you back to the life you lived
without the , fatigue, depression, anxiety, and other
symptoms of chronic fatigue. These will help you become
full of energy and vitality and finally get the rest you
deserve.

Infant Stimulation

Infant Stimulation
Many parents want to find ways to help stimulate their baby
and what better way than through play time together. For
babies, playing stimulates their senses, and helps them to
learn. Playing with your baby, also known as infant
stimulation, can include activities that stimulate your
baby's senses.

From birth through the first few months, babies thrive on
infant stimulation. Visual stimulation, tactile
stimulation and auditory stimulation can play big roles in
your interactive time together. Infant stimulation can
also help improve your baby's curiosity, attention span,
memory, and nervous system development. In addition, many
babies who receive appropriate stimulation reach
developmental milestones faster and have better muscle
coordination.

Babies love repetition and will begin to mimic facial
gestures we make. When you place your face directly in
front of baby's this can provide visual stimulation,
entertainment and socialization skills for your little one.
Couple this visual interaction with sounds, and you also
trigger important auditory stimulation. Try singing,
humming or even telling a little story. You can say
something you are familiar or make something up as you go.
Your baby won't even mind if the words don't make sense, as
long as you continue to speak, or sing, in a loving tone
your baby will listen intently.

Touch can be one of the best ways to stimulate your baby.
It provides contact, reassurance and relaxation. The
important sense of touch can be stimulated through play and
close contact. By playing with baby's hands and fingers
you can stimulate your baby's tactile senses. Also by
allowing your baby to grasp your fingers, you continue this
interaction and help to engage baby in this tactile
learning process.

You may also continue this interactive play by using gentle
movements to stimulate many senses at one time. First try
laying your baby down on a soft blanket, and while singing,
help your little one to gently cross arms and then open
them. Next try this with the legs and continue singing or
humming to stimulate both auditory and tactile senses at
the same time. You can create visual stimulation by being
expressive with your face, and making eye contact, while
you engage in this playtime activity.

Consider also the confinement of being in a diaper the
majority of the time. To help improve baby's tactile
input, you may try some activities that allow you to spend
time together and don't require baby to wear their diaper.
Infant Massage may be one of these important activities.
During massage time, your baby is free to explore without
their diaper and you provide stimulation through touch,
sight, sound and smell. By warming oil in your hands your
baby begins to listen to the swishing sounds, see your
hands moving, smell your scent and any the oil may have,
and learn what is happening next.

Begin massage when you are calm and relaxed. Start by
asking baby's permission and then resting your warmed hands
on baby's legs and feet. Begin with gentle stroking down
baby's legs to their little feet, then hug each toe with
your fingers and kiss the bottom of the feet. All the time
making eye contact and speaking lovingly to your baby. If
your baby is enjoying this time together continue on by
stroking down the chest and over the tummy. If you want to
spend a little more time on the tummy, you can massage in a
large circle only moving in a clockwise direction. Then
move on to the arms. Again on the arms, stroke down the
arm towards the hands, hug each finger and kiss the palms.
Then while hugging your little one you can stroke their
back.

Together you will learn what activities you both enjoy and
how best to stimulate your ever growing and developing baby!

ADHD and Psychotherapy

ADHD and Psychotherapy
In conventional medicine we refer to the "multi-modality"
approach to treating ADHD. We view stimulant medication as
the most effective treatment, but realize that it is not a
complete solution. Since medication has its limitations,
psychotherapy has been used in addition to medication.

You may ask why specifically psychotherapy has been
employed. After all, ADHD has just as many educational
and social ramifications as it does psychological ones. It
would make just as much sense to have social skills
training or learning assistance be used as an adjunct to
medication.

The real reason that psychotherapy as the next step after
medicine is that for most of its recent history, ADHD was
considered a psychological problem. Psychologists were the
ones who put the most effort into studying and treating
ADHD. It is not surprising that what they came up with
were treatment plans based on psychology. What else could
anyone expect? Psychology is what they know.

So for better or worse, it turns out that medication and
psychology go hand in hand and are now the main focus of
the multi-modality treatment for ADHD.

There are numerous psychotherapeutic approaches to treating
ADHD. How well do children do with psychotherapy?

Your child's success depends in part upon which
psychological approach you use. Certain techniques work
extremely well, and can even reduce or eliminate the need
for medication. Others are a big waste of time and money.

There are even some instances were psychological
intervention can be dangerous to your child and your
family. I am saying this from experience. I have seen
this. Regarding psychotherapy, like everything else, you
have to know exactly what you are doing if you want to help
your child.

Goals of Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy addresses six basic problems encountered by
ADHD children and their families.

These are:

• Stress and anxiety resulting from struggles to meet
life's demands
• Low self-esteem
• Feelings of incompetence
• Grief over lack of accomplishments
• Feelings of helplessness
• Poor social skills

None of these problems are part of the core symptoms of
ADHD. Instead, they result from the psychological trauma
that occurs as a result of having ADHD.

Psychotherapy tends to focus on the development of better
coping skills to help ease the impact of problematic
situations. It does not eliminate ADHD symptoms.

However, the appropriate therapy can help a child develop
organizational skills, time management skills, and
communication skills, which become essential to master as
the child matures.

There are many different therapeutic approaches, but not
all enjoy the same success. You really have to know what
you are doing before you commit your child to therapy.

I am going to discuss briefly a few of the current therapy
approaches so that you know what they are.

Behavioral Therapy

The goal of behavioral therapy is to change your child's
behavior. This is accomplished by making certain
modifications in your child's environment in order to
encourage desirable behavior and to discourage undesirable
behavior.

Your child is given a set of goals. He is rewarded
positively for executing the desired behaviors and given
consequences for failing to perform the desired behaviors.
This is often done in both the home and the school, and
requires more structure, closer attention, and limitations
of distractions. The result is that the behavioral therapy
shapes the child's behavior over time.

Behavioral therapy is one of the most common forms of
therapy used with ADHD children. Like other therapies, it
is expensive, but if it is well targeted, behavioral
therapy can be quite effective.

I designed a course to help parents more constructively
discipline their children and foster a better, more loving
relationship. If discipline is an issue for you, this is a
very effective and cheap option. The entire 20-week
program, along with complete online support costs less than
one behavioral therapy session.

Social Skills Training

ADHD is best known as a condition that seriously interferes
with the child's ability to be successful in the school
setting. That is because this is where the problems are
first noticed and their behavior causes the most problems.

However, a more significant problem is that these children
do not develop normal social interaction skills. As a
result, they do not develop normal peer relationships.
This aspect of ADHD will cripple the child decades after he
has left school and will set him up for life-long
difficulties and unhappiness.

Social skills training programs are designed to help your
child deal with this problem. How effective are these
programs? This depends on a number of factors. Again, you
have to know what you are doing in order to choose wisely.

Parent Counseling and Parent Training

Parent counseling and parent training are two of the most
commonly recommended psychological interventions offered to
the parents of ADHD children. These are usually offered in
the form of cognitive-behavioral training, either in an
individual, family, or group family setting.

The idea is that most of the child's life is spent not
under the influence of medication. In addition, medicating
the child does nothing to improve the parents' parenting
skills. Therefore, parent counseling and parent training
are employed to better empower the parents to deal with the
periods when the child and his ADHD behavior are in full
bloom.

Conclusion

The conservative traditional approach to treating ADHD
usually includes medication with some form of
psychotherapy. Psychotherapy may be helpful in treating
some of the psychological problems that accompany ADHD. As
your child gets older, these problems could be more
significant than the actual core ADHD symptoms. However,
psychotherapy does not make your child more attentive or
less impulsive.

Psychotherapy is very tricky. There are many different
forms of psychotherapy being used today. Some work, some
do not. All these techniques are expensive.

Psychotherapy can be a monetary sinkhole. If you choose a
modality that does not work well, you could be in for years
of expensive, only moderately effective treatment. On the
other hand, if you choose correctly, you might see
significant improvement in your child in a relatively short
period of time. You might be able to reduce or eliminate
the amount of medication your child takes.

I feel the need to repeat one word of caution. We
generally think of medicines as being dangerous because
they have side effects or toxic properties that can harm
you if they are not used correctly. We are not used to
thinking about psychological counseling the same way.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

When therapy is done properly it can change your child's
life. In conjunction with medication it can be a very
powerful and effective combination. But if you choose the
wrong therapy or the wrong therapist the consequences can
be very severe. It may not be just a question of wasting
your money. The wrong therapist can inflict serious harm
to your child. I have seen this happen to others. You
must make sure it does not happen to you.

Appropriately psychotherapy is definitely a part of
treating ADHD. You should make it part of your child's
treatment plan. Just be careful when you choose your
program. As helpful as therapy can be, it can be that
destructive.

Build your body's defences

Build your body's defences
Did you know there is no such thing as the immune system.
It is just a name we have given to our body's defence
mechanism. What we do have though is truly amazing part of
our body that can truly defend our bodies from viruses and
bacteria and its name is the Lymph System.

Lymph comes from the Latin word lympha, meaning "clear
water."

As quoted by Marcelle Pick OB/GYN/ NP "Think of a river: a
healthy river runs clean and clear. A brackish river chugs
along, thick with soot and silt that gets snagged,
pocketing pollution in small pools along the way.
Eventually, the sluggish river can become a breeding ground
for bacteria and disease. The same is true for your lymph."

This truly incredible system is a network of organs, nodes,
fluid, ducts, vessels and tissues that produce and
transport lymph. The nodes are strung along the lymph
vessels like pearls knotted on a string. There is 3 times
more lymph fluid in the body than there is blood. Lymph
fluid is a clear, slightly yellow fluid that flows around
the body, carrying white cells and antibodies to the
tissues and organs. This system assists in the production
of white blood cells. These cells search for, grab and
destroy bacteria and remove them from the body.

Unlike the heart the lymph system does not have its own
pump. It moves through the system in the right direction
because of the large number of valves that permit fluid
flow only in one direction. Most of the flow is against
gravity or "uphill". This movement is due to breathing
movements and skeletal muscle contractions. Exercising and
proper breathing helps the lymph fluid move around the
body. Proper breathing is when the diaphragm is extended on
an inward breath. Imagine your lungs are like a triangle.
Most people breathe in and only inflate the top of their
lungs, which means their chests inflate. Learn to breathe
properly and extend the belly (diaphragm) on an inward
breath. This will fill the whole lungs with oxygen, which
in turn, helps our bodies to cleanse itself of bacteria.

An easy exercise to help move the lymph fluid, is by taking
a good deep breath in for the count of 5 seconds, hold it
for 20 seconds and then release for 10 seconds. Do this 10
times, 3 times a day and flood your body with oxygen and
energy. We have to breathe all day long so why don't we
learn to do it properly and also make it work for us.

Another way to help the lymph system is with massage.
Massage moves the lymph fluid around the body, again
assisting in the cleansing process. There are many forms of
massage including lymphatic drainage. Lymphatic drainage
massage is a therapeutic deep- tissue massage treatment
that uses thumb pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes
to increase lymphatic flow and eliminate toxins from the
body. As with acupressure or shiatsu, the pressure during
the treatment is quite powerful and can really relax and
relieve the muscles. Lymph is so important in keeping the
immune system working properly that improving its flow and
drainage around the body is helpful in many ways.

As a consequence of modern unhealthy and unforgiving
lifestyles, we are continually putting toxins into our
bodies through bad diet, pollution, excess alcohol and too
much sugar. Boosting the lymphatic system helps to flush
all the toxins away and keep the body healthy. Lymphatic
drainage massage can also help the body fight infection and
speed up healing and recovery from illness. It reduces
water retention, boosts weight loss and can even be an
effective treatment for cellulite! Manual lymph-drainage
is used in the treatment of lymphoedema.

Rejuvenating your lymph system. The lymph system is there
to keep you clean and well. It does this non-stop 24 hours
a day 365 days a year and for the rest of your life. To
help rejuvenate your lymph system here is a list of
considerations: -

• Watch what you are eating. Reduce your body's toxicity by
avoiding processed food, sugars and too many carbohydrates.
Eat organic where possible. The less waste the lymph system
has to deal with the easier it is to flow.

• Drink plenty of purified water or filtered water. At
least 8 glasses a day. Remember we are 70-75% water, so
keep this topped up and help the fluids to run.

• Get some exercise. The best exercise for the lymph system
is jumping on a rebounder (mini trampoline). This helps the
lymph fluid to be pumped around the body. Walking, cycling
or running are all good forms of exercise. Just don't sit
and do nothing is my recommendation. Exercise makes you
feel and look great as well as help the lymph system. When
exercising don't be afraid to get sweaty. If you are
sweating this helps detoxify the body.

• Proper breathing. Learn to breathe properly and carry out
our exercise (as above) 3 times a day. Your body will thank
you for it. My tip is also try it when you are feeling
tired or stressed. A good deep breath that fills the lungs
works wonders for making you wake up and also for relieving
stress

• Avoid tight clothing that puts pressure on the nodes. For
women try and not wear a bra for at least 12 hours a day
and don't wear one in bed. If you feel you can't then get a
stretchy t-shirt.

• Watch your stress level. Stress causes acid in the body
and acid is toxic which adds to the burden of your lymph
system.

So take care of your lymph system and it will take great
care of you.

Make the rest of your life the best of your life ®

People are Being Proactive about Improving Their Health

People are Being Proactive about Improving Their Health
Attitudes are shifting throughout the country from health
care, often called sickness care, to wellness care. The
shift continues from treating disease and illness to
prevention. A healthy diet, moderate exercise, and now
more importantly, nutritional supplements, are providing
the three keys to improving our health. When these three
are combined many of us are experiencing the feeling of
wellness, vitality, and can even be accused of 'not acting
our age' by participating in sports and outdoor activities.

We have begun to realize that a healthy diet is important.
A healthy diet includes the elimination or significant
reduction of saturated fats. A saturated fat is a type of
fat that is solid at room temperature (imagine that in your
body!). It is the biggest dietary source for high levels
of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or so-called "bad"
cholesterol and often is a major factor in the development
of heart disease and other illness.

Even the Mayo Clinic has recognized that in addition to a
healthy diet, nutritional supplements can play a vital role
in our health by providing additional nutrients our bodies
need to regenerate. Our bodies do not make or produce
nutrients, we get them from the foods we eat, but much of
our foods today come from soils that have been over-planted
and over-fertilized. The US has topped the charts with
over 85% soil depletion and that was cited in 1992!

While organically grown foods are a step in the right
direction, not all organically grown foods are the same.
Organically grown food means that the foods are grown
without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
Many farmers who grow organic foods are committed to the
land and being in harmony with nature. Many desire to keep
a balance between people, plants, and animals.

Foods that were grown organically but processed afterwards
for freezing, canning, or packaging may have been
processed. Processing typically uses chemical additives or
preservatives. In addition, organic does not mean it is
pesticide-free. Some organic foods may have pesticide
residue from chemicals sprayed on the crops of nearby
farms, from contaminated runoff water, or shifting and
blowing soil.

So where do we find a dietary supplement that is nutrient
rich? The answer may be in the ocean. While not as
popular in the West, Eastern cultures such as those in
Japan and China have found considerable nutritional value
in sea vegetables. In some areas of Japan, diets consist
of 25% or more sea vegetables. What are the results of
eating a diet so high in sea vegetables? Within these same
regions there are more than 23,000 persons now living past
the age of 100. That's more than anywhere else on Earth.
Can it be they have found the Fountain of Youth?

Proper diet, the need for nutritional supplements and
moderate exercise is beginning to migrate from simple
awareness to action. Attitudes are shifting. The shift is
from treating disease and illness to prevention.

Metabolism - Your Best Friend

Metabolism - Your Best Friend
A fast Metabolism can be yours for life now! Pick up the
pace of your health and fitness. 'How do I increase my
metabolism?' 'How do I go from an unhealthy lifestyle to a
healthy alternative?' you ask.

How and Why? Firstly How? Metabolism is the biochemical
process where by nutrients are combined by the body's
cells. In the process of metabolism, cell content is
working hard. Cells work hard by using energy to extract
more energy from foods, and then again use alot of that
extracted energy to perform or drive their activities.
That's why it is important to get your sleep or rest
because even when your body is resting it is using more and
more energy to keep on the move.

Then Why? We humans are creatures of habit, enhanced by
much emotion and triggered by even more lifestyle stresses.
We truely do make things difficult for ourselves.
Therefore we tend to find it hard to decide on a habit - a
life long habit which is a lifelong enhancer, which can
encourage a lifelong life.

As quoted in Joyce Meyer's book "Look Great Feel Great" -
The connection between exercise and cancer protection is
not as direct as that between exercise and reduced
cardiovascular disease. Exercise has little impact on some
cancers yet it reduces your risk of breast cancer by
thirty-seven percent and has similar protection against
prostate and colon cancer. It does this by stimulating
your immune system. Your immune defense, centered in the
lymphatic system, circulates white blood cells through the
body, where they find and eliminate any cellular threats,
such as bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. Unlike blood,
which is pumped throughy the body by the heart, lymph
depends on muscle contractions to squeeze it through the
body. Moderate exercise more than doubles the rate at
which your lymph circulates! The faster those while blood
cells circulate, the more cancer cells and viruses they can
pick off.

Come on people - Stop wasting time in your precious life.
Like or love yourself enough to make the change; to improve
the quality of your very own life. Make the change to
fight illness and become the healthy being you dream of.

Calories are the main source of energy in the metabolic
process. If a person can burn more calories than they are
consuming, then they are well and truely on the way to
losing weight. Sounds simple? Not really, but, if we want
something bad enough it is essential and definitely
rewarding to make that change. A healthy lifestyle is
encouraged initially by becoming the weight and shape that
is a comfort to you. So then, it comes down to diet and
exercise to achieve that. However, the mindset must be
engaged in a 'Positive Gear' to make that happen. Really
take this time now to think of YOU. How your can feel
about YOU especially if the YOU is exceptionally contented
about yourself and your wellbeing, health and fitness, not
to mention appearance.

Calories are the fuel that drive and energize the body.
The more nutritious the food we eat is, the more efficient
our bodies will respond. You can increase your metabolism
just by what you eat, and sometimes by the more you eat.
BUT ... the 'more' intake of food needs to be 'more'
nutritious too, and definitely of the highest quality.
Eating a healthy diet is half way there to naturally
boosting your metabolism.

The second and extremely important half of the cycle is the
exercise. Those combined will defintely be the healthy
recipe to boost your system into much energy. A combination
of resistance and cardio training will defintely boost
metabolism because it requires the body to burn large
amounts of energy. This continues on well after the
exercise. The body will burn alot of energy after the
workout helping to repair tired and underworked muscles.
This then results in more lean muscle mass which then
requires more calories while resting to maintain.

So to achieve the happy and healthy lifestyle you are
dreaming of, set your heart, mind, body and soul to commit
to this lifelong habit. You will be on the New Road to
much energy, fitness, inner-strength and happiness, not to

Pets and Stress

Pets and Stress
My mother used to say "you can always trust a person who
has animal hair on them". As a kid, I often pondered what
this statement means. Are people who care for animals more
trustworthy? Kinder? Gentler?

Well, a recent scientific study says that people who own
pets are less stressed. Maybe not more trustworthy, but
less stress WOULD indicate greater wellness. An idea worth
considering.

The study examined the cardiovascular reactivity when
exposed to psychological stress of 240 married couples,
half of whom owned a pet. The researchers exposed the
people to stressful situations (mental arithmetic problems
and stuff like that) in a variety of social support
conditions: alone, with pet or friend (friend present for
non-pet owners), with spouse, with spouse and pet/friend.
They found that the people with the pets had much lower
rise in heart rate under such conditions; better than with
their spouse or friends.

This evidence the healing help pets provide has been
anecdotal for years. Hospitals, retirement homes and other
caring facilities have used pets to help promote wellness
with a lot of success. So it's no surprise, especially
where children are involved.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have conducted my own
experiment by observing how the people in my family and
visitors to my home relate to my cat and, of course how my
cat relates to them.

My cat is a rather funny looking, very playful and
affectionate youngish cat named Tony. He is a "hairless"
breed, called Sphinx.

Tony has many jobs. One is to help me to write by sitting
on my lap and purring loudly. He also reminds me to take
breaks by standing up and walking on the computer keyboard!
I digress.

One observation that is true for all unknowing participants
in my "experiment": everyone that enters my house, friends,
family members and even the FedX guy, upon seeing Tony,
their face changes and becomes somehow softer. It's as if
just seeing the cat makes them less stressed. Even the
little girl who is very frightened of cats loves to watch
the cat from a distance.

My partner, a high energy executive of a multi-national
company, is of particular interest to this study. When he
arrives home after work or travel, his body language is
"Mr. corporate leader". After greeting and kissing his
people family members, he looks a bit more relaxed. But
it's after he picks up Tony and strokes him (usually
followed by giving him some cat food), that he appears to
really relax and turn off from work.

Last week, I had a friend over who says she doesn't like
cats. Later I found them on the couch, and my friend said
"this cat really feels nice to touch". Her face and Tony's
could be best described as "content". Of course the cat had
a very special extremely loud purr just for her.

So, the conclusions drawn from my very subjective
experiment is that our pets really enrich our lives. It
would be safe to speculate that, yes pets reduce stress
levels in their owners. If you have a pet yourself, you
probably agree!

Try your own experiment.... Ask your friends and coworkers
about their pets and soak up the good feelings they
radiate. Enjoy.
