Cardio Exercise For Weight Loss

Cardio Exercise For Weight Loss
Cardio exercise is an activity that you will do at a
moderate pace for a minimum of 20 minutes, building up to
around 45 minutes or at times even higher. You should
always begin at a slow pace for about 5 or 10 minutes
because this allows your body to warm up and decreases the
risk of any injury. It is also a good idea to spend 5 or 10
minutes cooling down after finishing your workout. You do
this by going at the same slower pace as you were when you
were warming up.

Before starting a cardio program, always consult your
doctor, who can evaluate your current situation and give
you a rough idea as to where you should be starting and
what you are capable of. For the first week or two don't
try to push yourself too much. Spend this time getting to
grips with what you are doing. This also gives you and your
body the time to get comfortable with these changes. Once
you have a couple of weeks under your belt then you can
start adding to your program. This can be in the amount of
time, or distance that you do. Remember that to keep on
improving you must keep adding, otherwise your body will
soon adapt to what you are doing and this will lead to your
results stopping.

The next thing is decide what type of cardio exercise you
want to do. Try to think of something that you may enjoy.
If you hate running, it will be pointless taking up running
to lose weight, because your heart will not be in it, and
you will soon stop doing it. For cardio to be effective you
will need to do it for a certain amount of time (20-45
minutes). Some people can find boredom setting in pretty
quickly. To compensate for this you should use music
wherever possible while you do your cardio workout. Pick
your favourite tunes or something fast and motivational.
Focus on the music and not the time you are spending doing
your workout. This stops you from clock watching and you
will find that the time spent doing your cardio workout
goes by much quicker.

Here are a few of the best cardio exercisers for burning
fat:

Elliptical machines are a great way of burning fat,
improving your stamina, and toning your muscles. They are
relatively new compared to other pieces of exercise
equipment, but are very effective. You have the benefits of
working your upper and lower body with an elliptical
machine.

Rowing machines are excellent pieces of equipment. Not only
do they target all areas of your body, they can up to a
point increase muscle mass, which is always a good thing
when you are trying to lose weight. Apart from the fitness
benefits, you can burn many calories using a rowing
machine. The fact is that the more of your body you use
during a workout, the more calories you will burn.

Running us another good way of burning calories and it is
also free. Running is more effective than jogging for
burning calories. A couple of points to remember are that
you should make sure that you have a pair of good running
shoes. Also try to run on a soft surface such as grass as
this will have less impact on your joints than if you were
on a road. If you do run on a street, forget the music
because you don't want to be hit by a car that you didn't
hear coming.

A stationary bicycle is a traditional piece of equipment
which has been around for many years. It is still
considered as an effective cardio workout, but it all
depends on what levels of difficulty you choose to use. The
benefit of this piece of equipment is that you can ride it
while you are watching television, which may alleviate some
of the boredom associated with an exercise bike.

These are by no means all of the cardio exercisers that you
can do. There are lots of others including swimming,
skipping rope, circuit training, using steppers, and
walking. You need to pick one or a combination of a few
that you will think you might enjoy. Always remember to
start slowly and increase what you do a step at a time. One
thing is clear and that is the effectiveness of cardio
exercise for weight loss.

Mouth Guards To Protect Children's Teeth

Mouth Guards To Protect Children's Teeth
If your child is involved in any sports activity, you
should consider whether getting them a mouthguard is a
smart thing to do. Many organized sports require
mouthguards, but the children don't always wear them as
required. Parents should make sure that their children
comply with mouthguard requirements.

The American Dental Association recommends a mouth guard
for participation in the following sports: acrobatics,
basketball, boxing, discus throwing, field hockey,
football, gymnastics, handball, ice hockey, lacrosse,
martial arts, racquetball, rugby, shot putting,
skateboarding, skiing, skydiving, soccer, squash, surfing,
volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling.

Dentists estimate that between 13% and 39% of dental
injuries occur while playing sports. Five million teeth
will be knocked out of children and young adults in the
United States during sports activities. Safechild.net
reports that 60% of organized sports-related injuries occur
during practice rather than during games.

The front teeth are most at risk. Approximately 80% of all
dental injuries affect one or more of the front teeth. Soft
tissue damage, as a result of biting the tongue or cheek,
is also common.

Approximately 200,000 oral injuries will be prevented by
mouth guard use in the next year. Bicycle-related head
injuries account for more than 150,000 emergency room
visits annually.

If a single tooth is knocked out through an accident
sustained in sports activity, the treatment will involve
either re-implantation with root canal therapy and possibly
crown or replacement therapy with a bridge or implant when
your child is old enough. There may be an interim period
where your child will have to wear a cumbersome removable
temporary appliance until they are old enough for a more
permanent solution. The expense of these treatments will
often be as much as 15-30 times the cost of a custom fit
mouthguard.

Mouth guards range from $5 (low-end bought in store) to
$150 (top of the line custom fit). The ready-to-wear,
U-shaped mouth guards, made from rubber or vinyl materials,
can be bought without a prescription in many sporting goods
stores. However, they do not evenly distribute the force of
an impact due to the looseness of a non-custom fit. Dr.
Brazis recommends that you avoid using these type of mouth
guards and suggests going to a dentist to have a
custom-fitted mouth guard made to fit comfortably in your
mouth and offer better protection.

If having a mouth guard custom-fit by a dentist isn't an
option, then the best alternative would be a
"boil-and-bite" mouth guard from the sporting goods stores.
These mouth guards are made from a type of plastic that
softens in boiling water. You place the mouth guard in
boiling water, and once the plastic is soft, you put it
into your mouth, bite down on it, and mold the softened
plastic around your teeth using your fingers, lips and
tongue.

Be careful not to scald yourself when removing the mouth
guard from the boiling water, and make sure that it isn't
too hot to put into your mouth. If the mouht guard doesn't
fit comfortably the first time, you can reheat it and do it
again.

Dentalnotes, a publication from the Academy of General
Dentistry, says mouth guards have to be kept clean. Users
should brush their teeth before inserting the guards, and
the guards should be cleaned after use. And, of course,
mouth guards should not be shared.

Asbestos Lawyers & Lawsuits

Asbestos Lawyers & Lawsuits
Asbestos lawsuits are filed by plaintiffs who have suffered
as the result of asbestos-related illness. Plaintiffs in
asbestos lawsuits can include the victims of asbestos
exposure, or their families or loved ones. Defendants
against asbestos lawsuits are those parties considered
responsible for the asbestos exposure. In the past, targets
of asbestos lawsuits have included employers, asbestos
manufacturers or installers, and landlords or leasing
agents.

Why Should I Consider an Asbestos Lawsuit?

The purpose of asbestos lawsuits is to recover financial
damages that result from asbestos related illness. Possible
financial recoveries from asbestos lawsuits include the
cost of medical bills, lost wages, and other associated
costs. In some asbestos lawsuits, punitive damages
(designed to punish the defendant) are also awarded. A few
states permit asbestos lawsuits to be filed by people who
reasonably expect to develop asbestos-related illnesses.
These asbestos lawsuits regulations allow individuals
exposed to asbestos to attempt to prepare financially for
likely diseases. Many asbestos lawsuits have served to help
publicize the adverse health effects of asbestos exposure;
increasing numbers of asbestos lawsuits are decided for the
plaintiffs as information about asbestos exposure becomes
common knowledge.

Although asbestos lawsuits can be complicated at first
glance, a number of individuals have benefited from
asbestos lawsuits, including families of victims, left with
enormous medical and funeral costs. For more about asbestos
lawsuits and whether your situation is appropriate for this
proceeding, an attorney familiar with asbestos lawsuits may
be the appropriate person to consult.

Asbestos attorneys can help victims in recovering funds
related to asbestos-caused mesothelioma. Many of the
asbestos attorneys with experience in this field have
successfully claimed costs from those responsible for
asbestos exposure. Asbestos attorneys can regain medical
costs, lost wages, and punitive fees for victims and their
families.

A mesothelioma diagnosis can be devastating and confusing.
It presents questions about legal options, long-term plans,
and medical care. Luckily, patients suffering from the
devastating effects of mesothelioma can hire an
intelligent, competent mesothelioma lawyer for their
mesothelioma lawsuit. Before you decide on representation
and hire a mesothelioma lawyer, here's what you should know
about what a mesothelioma lawyer can do for you.

Why Hire A Mesothelioma Lawyer?

When faced with a legal crisis, it can be tempting to
pursue legal action without the intervention of an
experienced mesothelioma lawyer. This is not advised,
especially for complex litigation such as mesothelioma
claims For this reason, hiring a mesothelioma lawyer is
strongly recommended. A mesothelioma lawyer is not only
prepared to thoroughly represent your legal interests in
court; in fact, he or she will bring support, perspective,
and a lifetime's worth of expertise and education to your
mesothelioma claim. And that can spell the difference
between defeat in court and victory (and a substantial
mesothelioma settlement).

In addition to helping you decide where to file suit and
which parties to sue, a mesothelioma lawyer can advise you
on state-specific legal variations such as statutes of
limitations, awards caps and insurance regulations that can
affect your mesothelioma settlement. He or she will be
familiar with both asbestos and insurance companies and
understand their legal tactics. In addition, a good
mesothelioma lawyer knows the judges, venues and rules of
court that can make or break a mesothelioma lawsuit.

A mesothelioma attorney can meet with victims to discuss
liability in mesothelioma cases; using their prior
experience, mesothelioma attorneys can often predict the
likelihood of success of a particular case. A good
mesothelioma attorney will have the legal knowledge and
connections to pressure reluctant parties into accepting
accountability; many mesothelioma attorneys end up enabling
their client to collect without ever having to go to trial.
Mesothelioma attorneys can also help put their clients in
touch with the clients of other mesothelioma attorneys if
both parties agree, so that the parties represented by both
mesothelioma attorneys may exchange information and support
especially important with such a rare disease.

Can Flying Cause Blood Clots?

Can Flying Cause Blood Clots?
Blood clots in the leg, called deep venous thromboses
(DVTs), can occur in a very broad spectrum of the
population. Diabetics, the elderly and those who recently
had surgery are not the only people who are at risk of
developing a blood clot. Did you know if you travel by
plane frequently, are on birth control or have cancer, you
are at risk of getting a blood clot? These are just a few
of the risk factors associated with this potentially deadly
condition. Risk factors are inherited, acquired or highly
associated. The following is a listing of those factors.

Inherited Blood Disorders: Genetic thrombophilias or an
inherited tendency to develop blood clots are rare but can
and do occur. Genetic clotting disorders are reported to
exist in 20 to 30 percent of those with blood clots1. Most
patients and their family members only discover the
condition after genetic testing for blood clot disorders is
performed on a person immediately after developing a blood
clot. It is important for the entire family to know about
the disorder, so they can get tested and prevent it from
happening to them. For those who are found to have the
disorder, simple changes in lifestyle discussed below can
prevent them from developing a blood clot.

Acquired Risk Factors: Many, but not all, of these risks
factors are avoidable and are due to unhealthy lifestyle
choices. The following factors are associated with an
increased risk of developing blood clots:

1) Obesity: Those who are overweight or obese are not only
prone to having diabetes, heart disease and high blood
pressure, but they are also at risk for blood clots. Blood
clots are more frequent in overweight people especially
after surgery, bed rest or immobilization as it is harder
for the valves in the deep veins to push blood up against
gravity due to the extra weight.

2) Immobilization: Those who are in an above or below knee
cast or splint and/or are non-weight bearing after an
injury or surgery especially those involving the lower
extremities are also at risk as the weakened leg muscles
are not helping to push the blood in the veins up to the
heart.

3) Over 40 years of age

4) Sedentary lifestyle

5) Prolonged bed rest

6) Long hospital stay

7) Prolonged air plane rides

8 Heart & lung failure

9) Varicose veins

10)Birth control pills

11)Estrogen therapy

12)Cigarette smoking

13)Pregnancy

14)Diabetes

15)High cholesterol

Highly Associated Risk Factors:

1) Previous history of blood clots

2) Cancer

3) Positive family history of blood clots

If so many people are at risk of getting a blood clot, how
do you prevent it from happening to you? The best form of
prevention are simple lifestyle modifications such as
maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, quitting smoking,
and maintaining an active lifestyle. These modifications
not only help reduce the risk of developing heart disease,
high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes but they
can also reduce the risk of getting a blood clot. As a
general rule, if you have 2 or more of these risk factors,
it is important to take precautionary measures especially
if you just had surgery or are off your feet for a
prolonged period of time. Support stockings and
compression devices are widely available not only in the
hospital but in your local pharmacy and drug store to
prevent blood clots. Your doctor will start you on a blood
thinner if you are of high risk even if you do not have a
blood clot. For those with an inherited blood disorder and
those with a history of blood clots in the past, it is
especially important to take preventive measures. If you
are on a long plane ride, one can reduce the chance of
getting a blood clot by not crossing your legs while
sitting, getting up to go to the bathroom, walking around
the aircraft periodically, and by wearing support
stockings. Calf pain and swelling, increased warmth, girth,
and redness in the calf and/or a firm mass in the calf, are
all potential symptoms of a blood clot. Also shortness of
breath, chest pain, coughing, coughing up blood, increased
breathing and heart rate and fever are also signs of a
blood clot that traveled to the lung called a pulmonary
embolism (PE). Blood clots in the leg can dislodge and
travel through the bloodstream to the lung to become a PE,
stop oxygen from getting into the blood, cause shock and
even sudden death. If you experience any of these
symptoms, it is imperative that you seek medical treatment
immediately. Go to your podiatric or orthopedic surgeon,
primary care physician or other treating physician or, if
after hours, go to the emergency room immediately for
evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. If diagnosed, usually
by venous ultrasound, treatment of blood clots consists of
blood thinners to dissolve the clot.

Acne and Hormones Linked?

Acne and Hormones Linked?
Is there anything worse than the day before a big event, a
huge pimple or an outbreak of actual acne occurs? This is
bad enough as a teenager but as women get older the
expectation is that pimples and acne disappear. In fact,
evidence is compelling that acne and hormones are linked
and acne skin care needs to carry on through the adult life.

Adult acne is often suggested as one of the most annoying
problems aging women experience and certainly adult acne is
one of the most significant facial skin care issues - on
top of all of the antiaging issues that occur.

While teenagers and young adults make up the bulk of acne
sufferers, acne is also evident in adult women. Adult
onstage acne, particularly in women, is almost always
related to hormonal imbalances. There are even documented
cases of acne in babies, which is caused by the transfer of
maternal hormones to the baby through the placenta, which
stimulates the secretion of oil in the baby's skin.

Fluctuating levels of androgens, particularly DHEAS and
testosterone, typically cause the appearance of adult acne
in women. When the levels of these hormones become high,
secretion by the skin glands also increases. In its
simplest form this, in turn, is what actually encourages
the formation of acne.

Additionally, as far as women are concerned, acne that is
induced by hormonal activity is most often linked to the
menstrual cycle when levels of estrogens and androgens are
at their highest. Increased levels of progesterone
following ovulation result in increased secretion from the
skin glands, making the skin greasy, clogging pores, and
supporting the development of acne. Acne may continue to
cause trouble even after menopause because even though
estrogen levels may have begun to recede, testosterone
levels rise.

There are a few signposts that indicate whether acne is the
result of hormonal changes. Acne that breaks out for the
first time in adulthood is a major indicator. If a women
has irregular menstrual cycles, that's another sign. Other
indicators include a greasy appearance to the face, which
is a result of excessive secretion from the skin glands and
the growth of hair in peculiar body parts, which is
associated with increased levels of androgens. If the
level of androgens in the blood is high, it is likely that
acne is caused by hormonal imbalances. It has become clear
to medical science that there is a distinct link between
hormonal activity and the introduction of acne.

More and more evidence indicates acne and hormones are
linked and acne skin care, and particularly for adult acne,
has never been more important.

Eight Tips That Will Help You to Sleep Better Naturally

Eight Tips That Will Help You to Sleep Better Naturally
Do you find yourself having trouble falling asleep? Is your
lack of sleep interfering with your daily life? Do you
think that you will never be able to get a good night's
sleep again? If so, then this article is for you. Read on
to uncover some simple tricks that can help you fall asleep
and stay asleep naturally, without the use of drugs.

1. Designate your bed for sleep and sex only. If you use
your bed for watching TV, balancing your checkbook or
having deep emotional discussions with your mate, your mind
may start to subconsciously connect your bed with these
activities. This can kick your brain into overdrive and you
will find it very hard to sleep when your mind is going 90
miles an hour.

2. Ease your stress before going to bed. Develop a bedtime
ritual and do it every evening before going to bed. This
ritual may include meditation, slow stretching exercises,
yoga or even prayer. Do whatever eases your stress and
whatever helps you to relax.

3. Do not drink caffeine four to six before you go to bed.
Caffeine can stay in your body a lot longer than you
realize and can have you tossing and turning all night long.

4. Make your bedroom "sleep friendly" This means that you
should keep your bedroom dark and as quiet as possible. For
some people, a repetitive noise is a great sleep inducer. A
fan or a window air conditioner can produce such a noise
and also help to drown out other sounds. Do what you need
to do to get your room between 68 and 72 degrees
Fahrenheit, which is the ideal temperature range for sleep.

5. Avoid having a cigarette before you go to bed. Nicotine
is a stimulant and can keep you awake or cause you to have
a fitful sleep. This is just another good reason to quit
smoking altogether!

6. Don't go to bed hungry, but don't go to bed with an over
stuffed belly either. Try drinking a glass of milk before
bed. It contains tryptophan which is a natural sleep
promoting substance.

7. Avoid taking long naps during the day. Naps can be
tempting, especially when you are tired, but they can make
matters worse. If you feel that you must nap, try to make
it short, no longer than 20 minutes.

8. Keep your pets out of your bed. If your dog or cat
sleeps with you, they may move during the night and wake
you up.

So there you have some great tips on how to fall asleep and
stay asleep naturally. Try these tips and see if they work
for you.

You Deserve Perfect Skin and a Youthful Appearance

You Deserve Perfect Skin and a Youthful Appearance
Every woman deserves to have perfect skin . . . so,
wouldn't it be great if the world always saw the youthful
and vivacious woman with perfect, young-looking skin? Let's
get started right now to shape and change those minor
things that lead to signs of aging.

Ready to start turning back the hands of time? Here are
five simple tips to help you and your skin look and feel
younger.

1. Sit Up Straight

"People with good posture are seen as younger, more
confident, and happier than those who slouch, round their
shoulders, or tilt to one side," according to Paul
D'Arezzo, MD, a certified emergency physician in Colorado
Springs, CO. You'll not only look better, you'll feel
better too! Good posture prevents muscle strain and can
help eliminate tension headaches caused by strain on the
neck. Think about taking a regular yoga or Pilates class to
strengthen core muscles in your abdomen, pelvis, and lower
back. If you spend long hours seated at your desk, remember
to create several brief exercises to do at regular breaks
to relax, stretch and firm your muscles.

2. Darken and Emphasize Your Brows

"When brows are thin and light, they make your features
disappear, adding years to even the youngest looking face,"
says Damone Roberts, a celebrity eyebrow artist and costar
of TLC's 10 Years Younger. Cleanse your face in the
morning, followed by your moisturizer. Then fill in sparse
spots in your brow to create the illusion of thickness. We
associate youthfulness and confidence with darker, fuller
brows.

3. Follow A Daily Skin Care Routine

Caring for your skin twice a day can reverse the effects of
time by tightening, moisturizing and lifting the dermis of
your skin. Choose a cleanser specifically for your skin
type along with a moisturizer to support your skin through
the day. Don't forget to apply a toxic free SPF day cream
to protect against UVA/UVB rays throughout the day.
Cleansing and moisturizing again before bed will support
your skin as it rejuvenates during the night. . .leaving
you with perfect, radiant skin.

4. Stop Smoking

Smoking can shorten a woman's life by 14 1/2 years,
according to the CDC. It also causes excessive wrinkling
around the eyes and mouth, along with a grayish complexion.
"Your skin may be able to repair itself somewhat from the
damage," says Patricia Farris, MD, an assistant clinical
professor of dermatology at Tulane University. Using
organic skin care products, which are rich in nutrients,
will help restore the glow and radiance to your skin.

5. Brighten Your Smile

Our smiles are a beacon for impressions about age. Since
enamel wears over time and darkens, a dull colored smile is
connected with age. A smile that is bright white is
connected with youth and good health. Many of us have
lifestyle habits that affect the way our teeth appear to
others - including habits which stain our teeth like
drinking coffee, red wine, tea, etc. Not only do we need to
cut back the bad habits, but a trip to the dentist to have
teeth professionally cleaned is important to overall
health. And don't forget the daily brushing and flossing to
keep your teeth white and healthy.

How to save your blood pressure

How to save your blood pressure
Somewhere around 25 million Americans are currently taking
high blood pressure drugs of some kind. These medications
consist primarily of diuretics, beta-blockers, calcium
antagonists, and ACE inhibitors. But they tend to produce
some serious side-effects if taken for too long a time:
elevated blood sugar, depression, high cholesterols
aggravated asthma, potassium deficiency, and cardiac
arrhythmia.

An interesting report authored by M. Cohen, J. Josimovich,
and P. J Lefebvre appeared in the scientific journal
Clinical Science (81:739-42) in 1991. It was entitled,
"Anti-Oxidants Show an Anti-Hypertensive Effect in Diabetic
and Hypertensive Subjects." It demonstrated that such
substances substantially lower blood pressure levels when
used with consistency.

Spices are one important class of antioxidants. Besides
garlic and onion, there are rosemary, sage, thyme,
marjoram, and oregano. When regularly used in cooking, they
hold blood pressure within safe limits. Besides this, there
is the obvious benefit of making things taste better. If I
had to choose another spice to go with garlic and onion, I
would have to pick turmeric. This is ALA hair ingredient in
curry powder. It has a decided therapeutic advantage in the
liver. The Sabinsa Corporation of Piscataway New Jersey,
market a product called Curcumin C-3 Complex, which is the
only standardized turmeric extract of high quality
currently available. Taking some of this everyday will help
to bring stability to elevated blood pressure. (Call
1-800-248-7464 or write to Sabinsa Corp., 121 Ethel Road
West, Unit #6, Piscataway, NJ 08854 for more information.

Within each of our brains, resides a tiny organ known as
the pineal gland. It is about the shape and size of a
single kernel of corn. Some consider it to be one of the
body's "master glands" responsible for performing many
multiple functions. One of these is the production of the
hormone melatonin, about which much has been written of
late.

As we become older, a number of vital hormones begin
declining: testosterone, estrogen, growth hormone, DHEA
(dehydroepiandrosterone), and, of course, melatonin. At one
time the slow loss of these hormones was seen as a
consequence of old age, but now their losses could actually
contribute to the aging process. Which means that replacing
them might just extend our youthfulness a little longer.

A lady judge (aged 54) I know of, discovered her blood
pressure was 167 over 115, making her case extremely bad.
She went to a local health food store (New Frontiers
Natural Foods Market & Deli) and informed a clerk of her
problem. The clerk suggested she try some melatonin, which
proved to be helpful for her honor. She took two
3-milligram tablets every day for two months. By then,
another check of her blood pressure showed it had dropped
to borderline levels: 141 over 105.

Lose Weight By Eating Tasty Food

Lose Weight By Eating Tasty Food
Imagine that your breakfast consists of a small bowl of
cold porridge, with no "extras", washed down with a weak
cup of tepid tea.

You have no lunch.

For dinner you get a larger bowl of warm maize porridge
with, perhaps, a small portion of stew.

That is the daily diet of most of the poorer people in
sub-Saharan Africa. No wonder there are so few overweight
people there.

Yet, there are some who manage to become overweight even in
that part of the world.

How did they get to be that way?

The short answer is prosperity.

The chiefs, high ranking government officials and those
with prosperous businesses, who can afford a better diet,
put on weight.

With prosperity comes the ability to purchase a wider
variety of foods. It is only natural that a person who has
eaten a restricted diet for much of their life should
select foods rich in taste when they have the ability to
buy such foods.

High Taste Often Equals Wide Waste

Rich in taste often also means high in calories.

But it ain't necessarily so.

There are foods with high taste that do not lead to pounds
on the waist.

However, I digress, there is more to be said about the
relationship between prosperity and body weight.

Imagine, that you have been poor all your life and you
suddenly win millions on the lottery. Your first instinct
would be to go out and spend, spend, spend.

You'd buy all the things you'd always wanted. And then, the
pattern seems to be, you'd go on spending just because you
could.

It is remarkable how many of the big jackpot winners in
every country manage to spend their way through their
entire winnings in a few short years.

So there is a definite pattern of human behavior which
dictates that when a deprived person achieves spending
power they will spend indiscriminately. They simply buy
whatever appeals to their senses of sight, sound, taste,
touch and smell.

Prosperity Creates Indiscriminate Eating Patterns

The same pattern seems to apply with food. When a
food-deprived person becomes prosperous they eat
indiscriminately. They do not concern themselves with a
balanced diet. They simply eat what tastes and smells good.

What is remarkable is that a similar pattern seems to apply
with entire countries. As they become more prosperous, the
population spends more and more and they do it
indiscriminately. We are seeing this very noticeably in
Russia at the moment.

The population, recently released from the financial
restrictions caused by Communism, has become one of the
most consumer goods hungry peoples on earth.

It is only natural that when the people hunger for
something and have the wherewithal to purchase, someone
will supply. This is why all the consumer goods franchises
like Prada, Gucci, Channel, Starbucks and McDonalds now
proliferate in Moscow.

What has this got to do with your weight?

Two parts of the prosperity pattern affect our eating
habits.

First, as people become more prosperous they also become
less interested in labouring. Housework and daily cooking
are seen increasingly as chores to be avoided.

How are they avoided? By eating out, often at fast food
restaurants where the menus are designed to be high on
taste.

As I just said high taste often equals high calories.

When you combine a more leisurely lifestyle with a higher
calorie diet, the waistline just naturally expands.

Calorie Surplus Turns To Fat

So, if you have an expanding waistline you are caught in
the cleft stick of lowering activity and heightened calorie
intake. You have a daily calorie surplus that is turning to
fat.

Research shows that people very quickly become strongly
attached to lifestyle habits. They find it easy to justify
why they "need" to behave in ways that satisfy their
hungers.

The truth is that all they are doing is talking themselves
into believing that they "need" to behave in that way.

The bottom line is that if their survival depended on it
they would change very quickly.

The problem is that people do not see it as a matter of
survival. They are happy to go on poisoning their bodies
with excess calories because they're just plain idle.

It doesn't make sense to take great care about the fuel you
put in your car and not give a damn about what you put into
your body.

It's a weird form of selfishness to care more about the
momentary satisfaction of a taste that lasts for a few
seconds than you do about your body that has to last a
lifetime.

As I said at the start of this article there is an answer.
It is to find new tastes, flavours and smells that appeal
to you just as much, but which don't have the calorie load
of fast or convenience foods.

Losing Weight For 52 Days

I have been losing weight now for 52 days. The weight has
been coming off steadily, week by week. During this time
all my meals have been tasty. I can hardly recall a day
when I felt hungry. Neither can I recall a day when I spent
a lot of time preparing food.

As a married working man, I prepare my own breakfast and
lunch and my wife usually cooks our evening meal.

Breakfast consists of a glass of juice and a bowl of
muesli, with dried fruits and semi-skimmed milk. For lunch
I prepare a salad with French dressing topped with tinned
fish or boiled egg or grated cheese. I also have one or two
pieces of fruit for lunch.

If I need a snack I have a crispbread with a raw vegetable
or some dried fruit and nuts.

Dinner will consist of meat or fish, two vegetables and
potatoes, rice or pasta. For dessert I usually have yoghurt
or fruit or sometimes both together.

I do most of my daily exercises either sitting at my desk
or when I'm out walking the dogs. My diet is varied, tasty
and healthy. But the most important part is that it's
tasty. If it didn't taste good I would quickly get bored
and look for other things to eat.

I have made it my business to care for my body. As part of
my self-care campaign I have taught myself to enjoy
shopping for tasty food and preparing the food in a
taste-full way.
